I have long and intimate knowledge of the North Korean situation. Current events, translated to English, are, Pardon us, fine brethren to the South and in America, but we seem to be running low on edible roots. The post says a non-conference HOME game against Tulsa in 2014. Add SMU and four conference games. That makes six.

Quenton Brown ... ugh ... hopefully it's not serious. DT vs Berglund ... I don't mind who wins the job as long as the team does well. However, if DT is the starter and plays like he did this past year he won't be the starter for long. I don't think losing 20 lbs will suddenly make him more accurate or develop good foot work. Vito said we have a home game with Tulsa. He doesn't mention a road game so either it's a one and done or Vito just didn't mention it. Either way it's not a failure by us and it's not some great decision by Tulsa. It's is what it is.

Not really true. When UNT was invoted and accepted, the following teams were members of CUSA: Tulane, ECU, Memphis, Tulsa (just off the top of my head, there may be one forgot). More importantly, the following were NOT members of USA: ODU, UNCC, MTSU, FAU, and now maybe WKU. So, no, we didn't enter the old CUSA, but we also didn't enter the new CUSA. We were 1st choices, along with UTSA and FIU as replacements for SMU, Houst and UCF (?). But the stench of the Belt and a start up caused the others to get the hell out as fast as they could. So now we are left with 9 former members of CUSA in the new Big Whatever and at least 6 former Belt teams in CUSA. The new Big East is much better than the new CUSA, and both are shells of their former selves. The only good news is that we were one of the 1st three programs to get out of hell. Let's just hope the pecking order stays that way when the time comes to get out of purgatory.

So the new guy comes in with,arguably, the best north Texas tear ever, wins just over half as many games as the previous did in his last year and you are OK with this? North Texas lost to uah... Monroe twice....lost in the first round of the tourney...and you are cool with this??? Color my ass confused and stupid...I really don't get it. I don't believe for 3 seconds that you would have still supported the coach if he didn't win a single game this year...

Exactly. If I was an opposing coach who was recruiting a kid from around here that wanted to go to UNT, I pull out Clarke and Scottie and anyone else as prime reasons not to go here. I stated it in another thread....it is staggering to me that everyone is not going crazy that a kid who GREW UP A MEAN GREEN FAN, is now transferring from the SCHOOL HE LOVES. Some of you can spin it whatever way you want, but that is nutts.

I guess the NBA, NFL, MBL, NHL, College baseball, college men's and women's basketball, volleyball, soccer, diving, wrestling, and every other college sport have it wrong? But, College Football and the WWF have it right?

That site offers no context to the 3100 deaths. How many were homicides? How many were in self defense? How many were suicides? You might as well give us the total death toll for the US and tell us there is some sort of failure to prevent all those deaths.

Worrying about schedules down the road...greatness! Hey, the N. Koreans might bomb Grandbury too...why not worry about that? Seems so much more credible...and a much bigger reason to worry.

What is that you don't understand. I know more about basketball than you. I want my head Men's basketball coach to know more than me. Right now he does not. My Sarcasm is my way of dealing with the ignorance that this program is facing from the leadership and the few sheep that follow blindly. Why should I tell you something that the coach should be doing? Still trying to understand you are still supporting Benford. What does he need to do to prove to you that he's not qualified to lead a Division I Men's basketball team?

Flashes of greatness??? I've seen flashes of mediocrity, maybe even flashes of good. But nothing close to greatness.

As large as UNT is, there are a lot of area alumni who are not supporting UNT athletics. That speaks to the "unlocked potential" or the "sleeping giant" labels that have been mentioned in other posts. Obviously, the lack of success has not helped; but alumni response was weak even in winning eras. Whether it is justified or not, the lack of media coverage is probably a major reason more alumni are not involved. The reach of the DRC is limited. The Dallas Morning News is all about SMU, UT and the Big XII, TAMU and the SEC, and TCU. I don't think the Star-Telegram is much different. Even our alumni base in Denton County (outside DRC coverage area) sees little UNT coverage. The move to C-USA and adding several Texas opponents to the schedule gives UNT a huge opportunity to get the attention of more area alumni. Establishing a winning habit against those teams is essential. Even bigger opportunities, perhaps, are the upcoming home and away games with SMU. Those games will get significant media coverage. While we certainly want to beat SMU, and I really want UNT to beat SMU badly, even being competitive in that series should increase our exposure. So, while I wish the Florida schools had stayed put, I really like the move to C-USA. I like what I hear about the football team, and am really looking forward to the upcoming season. The opportunity is there for UNT to get alumni attention and grow the fan base. GMG!

Keeping Tulsa on the schedule is not the issue. That's smart--we ought to play them fairly regularly. The failure came where the A.D. had us playing return games at Indiana and at Tulsa in the same year.

Sitting right behind the home bench, I would agree with your friend's assessment 100%.

On a different note, this is great news for me. If we get some networking and events rolling by then, I might be able to get a big contingent of the UNT Alumni out here to go to the game with me. So I'll see you guys there whenever it is.

Andrew, Are you really as clueless as you come across? "No one who comes on boards like this knows anything about the sport they talk about." You are correct. I spent 20 years covering HS, college, international and AAU basketball, I don't know a DAMN thing about basketball. While I may not have played on any of the levels I covered, I guarantee I understand how to break down a 2-1-2 zone and how to stop a hot player on the opposing team better than 95 percent of the the people on this board (I include you in the 95 percent). I would be glad to give you a verbal lesson, with drawings, for a very large fee. Unlike you, I value basketball knowledge.

Here is an idea. Maybe Dodge, since he is the athletic director, could hire Benford away from us and promote him for the award next year. Hey, I bet many of us would subscribe to the The Picayune and vote for him to.

I don't think the true damage of losing JJ will be realized until we play a D2 team.

I don't know why everyone acts so surprised to see these walk ons do so well. A lot of the ones who do good we're all-district performers in high school at 5A football programs. Examples just to name a few include Kaydon Kirby - Flower Mound, Darnell Smith - South Garland, Kenny Buyers - Hurst LD Bell on this current team. I'd take a player from a 5A program who was a multi-year starter and all-district, but maybe a little too slow or undersized over these guys we offer from smaller schools who have better measurables but weren't that productive in high school. A lot of times our walk ons are beating out players who we were their only scholarship offer. This shouldn't be as shocking as we make it out to be.

I think that we celebrate Kaydon Kirby's accomplishment because it is a success story. He did not have the stars because he did not have the ability as a senior to attract the attention of scouts or recruiting coordinators at FBS universities. To Kaydon's credit he built himself into a FBS player. He added 30 pounds of muscle, eliminated mistakes, practiced and developed a winning attitude. He earned his spurs.

Comparing what JJ did at LSU to what Benford did at UNT this year and implying its the same is really kinda ignorant, don't you think? Lets compare: JJ- most conference wins in several years Benford- a disastrous conference record JJ- top 10 recruiting class in the nation for his 1st full class. Benford- what is shaping up to be one of the worst classes in CUSA and losing recruits to all-powerful programs like Eastern Michigan. Scraping the bottom of the JUCO barrel to complete a class that is still absent a true big man.

So how far did JJ take LSU into the NCAA Tournament? Wait NIT? oops... Guess in the end he went and stayed at home just like Benford

UNT got to McCarron 4 times, got to the LSU QB once. UNT gave up zero sacks to both Alabama and LSU. Obviously these were two different UNT teams but both of those teams run traditional drop back passing games. It is a heck of a lot easier to get to those type of QBs(UNT included) than trying to get to Klien, Aplin, Browning, Keenen or any of the assorted QBs that can get the ball out of the pocket in 1.8 Seconds from the snap. NFL teams cannot do it. That is not playing the numbers game, that is just fact. No , I don't think those teams are worried about trading d-lines. I also know that KSU, Alabama and LSU didn't throw the book at UNT but I do know what Saban and Snyder were doing on the sideline during those games, specially during the first halves. It was not pretty which tells me the UNT was doing something right. D1 D-linemen are about as rare a commidity as there is. Lot of prototypical D1 highschool D- linemen look real good when they go against kids that weight 100 pound less than them but it is a very different world when they move up to take on high caliber D1 O-linemen. More fail than succeed, even at the Top Tier schools. Yes the ranks are thin and small but I do disagree about your last statement. I do believe that the Mean Green will have a winning season. Tried not to sound too much like a Dad.

I was more excited about Larrimore maybe starting rather than Trice moving to second team. We'll see how it finally turns out against Idaho. With all the spread offenses around our secondary players will get lots of playing time even if they aren't starting.

The esay way to look at realaignment is; every team that is moving conferences is moving up. The new CUSA is still better than the SBC or even the new SBC. And yes the new Big East is better than the new CUSA, but not by much. However the new BIg East is not better than the old Big East. And before anyone ask is the new CUSA is better than the old CUSA, I'll say it doesn't matter. UNT didn't get invited to the old CUSA, it got invited to the new CUSA.

Yet we have fans who will line up to bemoan that fact that local kids won't consider us. Local, or from across the nation, would you sign on to this train wreck?

I used to get very worked up about us being left behind. At this point I can live with winning most of the time regardless of who we play. For the foreseeable future there will be no running with better established programs or developing meaningful rivalries. I just want to see our administration commit to frequent winning, at whatever level they can accomplish that at. First I guess we need to have an administration though. I have to travel several hours to see North Texas play no matter where it is. Now I don't even have the easy Jonesboro trip. I won't do it if there is a high probability of losing, so continuation of the current trend will make the Mean Green irrelevant for me pretty soon.

The Dodge hire definitely was not the issue. I think the 1-AA exile was. The Dodge issue was a manifestation of the struggle to get back to relevance after the 1-AA days. We're on our way... It's painfully slow. Unfortunately, we're encountering monstrous potholes along the way that cause us to have to pull over and put the donut on until we can get to a discount tire, get a new, better tire, and get back on the road. I believe we won (early 2000's) too early. We weren't ready to sustain that winning culture. I think we're ready now. Get on a streak like we were on in the early 2000's today, and we'll be just fine.

UNT90 is just passionate about UNT--we sorely lack this from an athletic standpoint from almost every angle possible. He wants us to be the best we can be in an area he cares about. He's a man--over forty--and he likes sports. Most guys do. He sees his other buddies and colleagues that went to colleges across the state and region always talking about their teams performances over the last decade and he asks why is it that I can't ever brag about anything that happened the weekend before. Then he realizes that Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Tech, A&M, Baylor, UH, OU, OSU, Tulsa, La Tech, ULL, ULM, LSU,etc..have all done MUCH better on the field than we have over the last 8 years. Its tough when you are talking about 5-7 as your best year in the eight years and prognosticators are suggesting that we are going to win around 2 games this upcoming year. And its embarrassing. I hate it --and I know you all do, too--when I hear some TCU fan in FW talking about winning the Rose Bowl over Wisconsin or some SMU fan talking about their bowl wins over the last 4 years and then they laugh at you because you went to North Texas and they ask you how it felt to lose to Florida International Airport or Western Kentucky this past weekend. I've read FFR post on here before about getting constantly razzed about our poor performance all the time at work. It gets you down. A lot of negativity tends to come out when this stuff seems to never end. I've been right with UNT90 and his posts recently--and I'm sorry for that negative tone. I get down, too. I shouldn't, but I do, because I want for us to be the best we can be. And I know that yall do too. Sometimes we all let our frustrations out in such a negative way, though, that it loses its message because it comes off as griping and moaning. Its tough when you see the university make poor hires and get stuck with it for years on end, but in the end, we just have to accept that it is how it is here. Maybe the "value" approach here is the best thing for the university and it doesn't merit complaints about it because they know its what the university's core wants. I will say this, though, about our football future--I trust Coach Mac and I truly believe he knows what he's doing in building us up from the ashes. I think this program has a better chance of becoming a winner under him than it did under anyone we've had since Fry as a FBS school. We won under Corky as a 1-aa program with absolutely no care at all to athletics. We had some years of success under Dickey, three to really be exact, but he wasn't the answer for a program like ours that needs fans. Obviously, Dodge was in waaaayyyy over his head from the start. I think Coach Mac knows what needs to be done and he's trying to do it the right way. And I think we will win 5 or more games this year because of the steady improvement. He got here and had no lines or a QB. Last year, the line play improved, but the QB play didn't. Hopefully, he gets more line improvement and the QB can make an impact that will propel us toward a competitive season. The biggest reason I want to see this thing take off is because I believe that if Mac does fail here, we aren't going to put a decent salary out there again for a coach and his staff. And at a school like ours, if we've learned anything in the last 35 years, its that an unknown coordinator or high school coach cannot build a successful winner here. Just as Fry did after his only losing season here, his plan finally started working and he left us with a ranked program for the only time in our history. I believe McCarney can do that, too. But this is the year that he has to start showing us that he can do it here.

I like that. Make no mistake, I want us to win, but despite not achieving all we should have, after 100 years of trying, I have met some terrific people and had some wonderful experiences following North Texas football. But I want to win. I want to win now. GO MEAN GREEN

I understand the frustration he and others have, but unless a rant comes with a solution or suggestion for improvement that he/she can directly contribute to I just can't take their message seriously. 1. 90 rants because he cares - love that 2. just add some suggestions and solutions to the rant for more effectiveness At this point it looks like we should just pack up the tent and call it a Mean Green life. As long as UNT is fielding a team and tailgating is encouraged I will be there with diehards in tow. If I have stood in a hurricane against against Nevada, sizzler at OU, debacle at Rice and heartbreak in Austin, I sure can enjoy a beer in the Alamodome and some Mexican food in the Sun Bowl. Man the Mean Green helped me see Jake the Snake at ASU, taken me to the best tailgate in the nation at LSU on multiple occasions, observed a miracle in the desert, shocked by a hog call and many beat downs of ACU early on. Now you are talking. The biggest mistake we ever made was leaving the old Missouri Valley. Hayden Fry apparently thought we could force our way into the SWC by going independent as Houston had done. He was wrong and it cost us our D1 status and almost cost us our football program. That is all behind us now, however, and we just need to win. Victories over Tulsa this year and SMU next year would do wonders for our self esteem. Hey, it is possible.

For the history purists, Fed Mart was on university, not Gibson's. Gibson's was where the current sack n save is close to campus. So sad I am old enough to remember this.
