  1. Take it easy man. No offense but irrational fans like you are what makes being a coach even more difficult. Honestly I expected this team to go 0-5 through the first 5 games of this season, beating Indy was a pleasant suprise. This coach has been handed a team with close to 0 talent and no football iq whatsoever, as he has openly stated many times. He's testing out his theories and seeing what works right now, let him do that. Everyone needs to relax, support what he's trying to do and drop these crazy expectations.

  5. UNT fans are amazing. You turned on Coach Dickey during a streak of 4 straight conference championships and 4 straight coach-of-the-year awards. Now you're turning on a coach after his first four games on the job. Four games in which he beat a Big-10 team. Amazing God bless Texas!

  6. There are people out there who feel a lot things should be legalized. That doesn't make it ok to do those things. And it doesn't matter if every kid in America is doing drugs. Carey didn't even have to quit, he just had to pass one drug test, or at least figure out a way to cheat to pass one. He was given multiple chances an couldn't do it. Even if we're going by whatever morally absent "building a program 101" you are referring to, then fact that someone can't even figure out how to cheat to pass one drug test or quit for a week to pass one makes them a person who I don't want in the program.

  8. Not recruiting related but I was at the championship game last year in Mansfield. (St Thomas & Plano Prestonwood) I left at halftime very upset with the officiating against Prestonwood but in particular, against Julius Randle. He had 4 of the worst calls in the history of bad calls against him. Clearly the most dominate player on the court, the refs just decided that he was not going to be a factor. I drove over 50 miles to get there just in time for the tipoff from Kimball's regional championship game at the Special Events Center in Garland. Anyway, King didn't overwhelm me but you can tell that his best ball is ahead of him. Needs to pick up some serious weight and add strength. Kid looked no older than 13.

  9. I have not had a chance to go back and read all of the threads on the Tulsa game (I was there last night and have been doing homework all day), but if people are saying that are not going because of last night, that is absolutely pathetic. The LAST thing we need right now is for our crowds to drop to abysmal levels. The support needs to be there this year no matter what.

  11. I disagree with Coach Mac's decision to start McNulty. However, to level "attendance-killing" charges against him is asinine at best. The man has busted his tail probably more than any coach in North Texas history to get the students, alumni, and community interested. We can't place any of the blame on Coach Mac for failing to sell out Houston and not having a better turnout against Indiana.

  12. First of all, the fans turned on Dickey before he started winning in conference. In 2001 after an unbelievable loss to ULM, there were For Sale signs in his front yard and RV was ready to fire him until "higher ups" told him otherwise. The next week started the conference winning streak/bowl run, and I don't think DD ever won over all of the fans, but the team's success made him tolerable. We haven't turned on Coach Mac, we just don't understand why he has put McNulty in these situations and why he started over Osborn. His answer to Vito's question was the easy way out. Vito should have kept digging, because Mac's answer is typical "coach speak" that can't be disputed because his practices are closed. I will be driving almost 6 hours to Denton this weekend to watch the FAU game, and if McNulty starts, it will be my last trip for a while.

  13. Despite the way it appears, realignment is about more than "recent football success." Just look at Syracuse. One winning season since '05 including 1-10 in '05, 2-10 in '07 and 3-9 in '09. Those are the same kind of seasons we have had yet the ACC jumped at the chance to invite Syracuse. Meanwhile the ACC says "no" to West Virginia who's worst record in the same time frame was 9-4. Things outside of recent football success clear play a significant role.

  14. For me, UNT is EXACTLY where I expected it to be after 5 games...1-4. That being said, the Tulsa game was a bit of a step back for me from all the progress I have been seeing game in and game out. I'll give Coach Mac his reasoning on starting McNulty. He's the HC and he gets to make the call. Obviously, he knows a bit more about coaching and player evaluations than even the most ardent of fan. BUT, where I have my question relates to why McNulty was left in the game for as long as he was without being replaced by Osborne. Maybe McNulty is a "practice player" at this point in his career and will develop into a game day player with experience. Thus, the need to get him game day experience. On the other hand, perhaps Osborne is a "game day" player and less of a practice player. Seems to me that Osborne has gotten some pretty good results when he is in the game. DT is "our guy" and he will probably be back for the FAU game. So, that should really help the team and the possibilities for a win for the Mean green. I fully expect to see win #2 Saturday. As for attendance. Come on folks. Attendance has been fine for our two home games, and I find it a bit more than interesting that people will even consider not attending Saturday because the team is 1-4 or because they didn't like the decision to play McNulty over Osborne. get real folks, you either support the Mean Green or you don't. If you are a member of the Mean Green Nation you will be in your seat at Apogee on Saturday. I know you will, even if you share my frustration over the Tulsa game results. It's more the casual fan that I am concerned about attending Saturday...especially if that 20% chance of rain develops. We all know this is going to be a 2-3 year process. There will be mis-steps along the way, but we have already seen progress. The seniors on this team are doing all they can to help develop our younger players. They, in my opinion, have "earned" the right to have some great crowds. The seniors know that the future is bright for this program and that they have "held the fort down" as best they can awaiting the reinforcements. Let's, as members of the great Mean Green nation, not let the seniors down as they keep working. Disappointed, certainly...questioning the call to leave McNulty in the Tulsa game as long as happened...yes indeed, but certainly not giving up on this team or this staff. My bride and I will be there Saturday to witness win #2 in all our "Green Glory". I know I will see each and everyone of you as well.

  15. Hey eggerton, what's you background on rating football players/prospects?
    3 points
  16. Exactly. I think both fanbases should lay off the other and realize, "hey, our administrators are actually fueling our football programs!" That realization in itself should make all of us happy. I could easily jump into the stuff being thrown around in this thread, but really, what's the point? I wont egg UNT fans on about losing to Tulsa, since not to long ago we went 1-11 with a new coach. National (hell even local) recognition takes time because winning takes time. Arguing about alumni size, location of universities, endowments, football history, etc is useless. Win and you'll get the accolades. All that other garbage is fuel for bitter losers (that's a comment meant for all fanbases, not calling out UNT).

  18. Much is being made about what a QB did in limited time in a game in which we were getting blown out. Just finished watching it, since I got too mad the first time. Recap. 1) McNulty's first pass... poorly thrown on 3rd and 5. True Freshman.... possibly his worst throw of the game, including the picks. 2) Tulsa scores with ease... 5 plays, 76 yards, 1:28. Defense is a joke. 3) Next drive, our predictable, and predictably poor run game, runs for 3 yards on 3 plays (not counting McNulty's 1st down scramble). McNulty's in 3rd and 7... pick 6. 4) Next drive. Probably our best in terms of play-calling. We threw it on some 1st downs! This made more 2nd and 3rd and shorts, and we were able to convert them with the run game (using the pass to set up the run). Hamilton on the big pass play. 1st and goal at the 3. Can't run it in. Can't use a mobile QB (isn't this why we have him in?!). Rush rush rush rush... 0 points. 5) We FORCE A PUNT! 6) Good field position after the punt, decent run game, and pass interference get us to 1st and 10 at the 28. Holding penalty puts us out of it... 2nd and 17. Incomplete pass by McNulty. 3rd and 17... short pass... 3rd and 11. Penalty... 52 yard FG. Thank Jeebus. 7) Tulsa has a tough time the next drive... they actually have to convert a 3rd down. Otherwise... pie. A 25-yard TD pass where we missed approximately 125 tackles. 8) Good field position from Chancellor. McNulty completes a 3rd and 9 for a 37-yd pass to Chancellor. 3-for-3 on the drive. 1st and goal at the 6. The worst play McNulty made was taking the sack. But again we can't bang it in from 6 yards out. Fourth-and-23? FG Blocked. Yeahhhh. 9) Tulsa's back. 8 plays, 75 yards, 1:02. Still can't stop them. 28-3 Tulsa. Rout is on at the half. 10) McNulty picked returned 74 yards.... 11) 2 bad rushes make it 3rd and 16 at the 16... McNulty converts. Another bad rush + a penalty and it's 2nd and 28. McNulty gets 16 of it back, gets sacked. Gets new life on a penalty. Another bad rush on 1st down (it's the 3rd quarter... can you see a pattern?) 3rd and ten... punt (penalty on our punt formation?) 12) A couple of plays and Tulsa had another TD. 5 plays, 81 yards, 1:57 off the clock. One pass on the drive for 60 yards. 13) Immediately after, McNulty's first pass is on 3rd and 14. Incomplete. 14) Defense gets a rare stop. McNulty completes a 46 yard pass to set up the TD. 15) NT gets the ball back at their own 1 yard line. 5 runs and a punt. 16) Tulsa puts in backups. I was actually impressed with the true freshman QB. Two pick-6s is bad... really bad. But Tulsa could score any time they wanted to. The difference between Osborn's first TD drive and either of the ones that McNulty got us to 1st and goal? We threw on 1st down and blew their minds. The 2nd one... against backups, with a short field, after Tulsa's backups fumbled away the ball. I don't think Osborn makes a difference in the game here. We were beaten by a superior team in talent and scheme. This board is a really strange one sometimes. A couple of weeks ago, people were wondering why Thompson was in there, because he "couldn't get it done" vs Alabama. Now we're lamenting his loss, and blaming the true freshman QB bc we couldn't run the ball or stop the Tulsa offense or block for a freaking FG. This post has been promoted to an article

  19. Do you really think this would happen in Lubbock, Waco, or even Sanger? There is a reason Denton was voted sorriest sports town in America years ago. I hope it fails miserably for them. They do next to nothing for either University and would be the size of Decatur without them. Lewisville and others closer to Dallas can handle any overflow and are football towns. OU fans are sofisticated enough to know Denton's football reputation and won't be enticed to stop in little "d". In fact I did observe that little "d" sits on the TEXAS side of the Red River. Why is it acceptable to appease the Okies to the detriment of your own state? I guess when you don't care about your hometown team you don't care about your state either. Classic hypocrites these Dentonites.

  22. Perceptions are amazing. SMU had a good run in the 80s caused by...well... I don't understand where their "storied past" reputation comes from. Doak Walker 100 years ago? I guess it's truly the company you keep. And as for the Big East conference getting them bigger crowds, they didn't get crowds when they were in the SWC, why would they now? All credit due to June Jones, he has built a hell of a program there. I would not be surprised to see them ranked before the year's over, but Dallas is not going to support them in large numbers, they never have and never will. Just a fact...

  23. I'm so sick of the "what did you expect, it's rebuilding" attitude. Everyone understands that's it's rebuilding. If we're going to hide every boneheaded move under the shield of rebuilding then we just need to close the football forum down for 2-3 years. Nothing positive can be gleamed from wins just as nothing negative from losses because it's "rebuilding" and all expectations are moot.

  24. I agree that Prohibition is probably the worst idea we have come up with in a long time. It didn't work in the 1920's and it isn't working now. It just perpetuates the problem and makes it worse. But, there is a difference between what is legal or decriminalized and what is wise. I doubt that having the team stoking up each night is a good idea and if a coach wants to enforce that, he has my blessing. We all (at least most of us) like to party in our own way and I criticize nobody who does so responsibly, but if it is affecting my job performance or job attitude, then it is time for me to adjust my priorities. The same should go for student athletes.

  26. When Coach Dan McCarney came into this job, he evaluated the talent and said "folks, we are going to need some time." I trust the evaluation of a former HFC at a Big Time School than maybe some of our usual assistant coach hires of past decades who might just be trying to buy some time on their contracts? I think Coach Mac at age 57 knows quite a bit more than some because of where he's been. His last gig was Assistant Head Football Coach for the Florida Gators so he knows his talent. Said it pre-Indiana game to our AD at at tailgate but Year 3 is when I think we see a Mean Green turnaround with more talent of which we've not seen the likes of in a long time. Fry's 2'nd year at NT was a disaster with only 2 wins. Firstly, we must out recruit anyone in the SBC and at least half the schools in CUSA. Yet we also need to keep the perspective that hardly any of Boise State's recruiting classes are ever touted nor ranked high at all. The evaluation of talent is foremost at a school like Boise and North Texas for that matter. If you didn't notice, players recruited for CUSA schools seem to be a step quicker and much larger across the board than North Texas. Guess that is one reason some of us want a better conference because it even affects the kind of recruits you get across that same board. Just another .02 cents. GMG!

  27. Can you explain why we continue to play DE's and DT's that cannot get sacks or QB pressure consistently, or CB's that continue to give up 40+ yard TD's every week? Oh wait...
    2 points
  28. Yeah, well, don't harp on that too much. That kind of stuff is conveniently ignored for the most part. It's much easier to just beat on the guy that "THREW 2 PICK SIXES!!11!!" rather than the host of other issues which present themselves every week that UNT finds themselves with a personnel disadvantage. Much easier to see interceptions and make snap judgements about coaching!! Also, it's easier to suggest that not one, but at least two or three coaches would sign off on starting a player who they didn't feel gave the team the best chance to win. Can you imagine dropping that poison pill in a locker room setting? Think a coaching staff with that much experience would PURPOSELY do something like that? Some of us do. Never mind that we didn't see any practice to confirm or deny whether this was based on practice or grasp of the offense itself. Even though there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that very thing. There aren't any shortcuts to building the program. This lesson--hopefully--is becoming clear. You have to find out who your players and playmakers are, and who gives you the best chance to win going forward. UNT can't do this unless they sign and play those players. Personally, I'd much rather do this against a Tulsa in an away game that doesn't mean anything to SBC standings, but that's just me. It has to be done at some point. Full speed ahead, IMO.

  29. Sunday results around the Belt: ULL 0-4 NT ULM 0-3 Denver FAU 2-1 Troy FIU 2-0 USA WKU 3-2 ASU MTSU 1-0 UALR Records through 4 games (Teams in red we have played already): (4-0): NT, FIU, Denver (2-1-1): USA (2-2): Troy, MTSU, WKU (1-2-1): FAU (1-3): ASU, UALR (0-4): ULM, ULL After a couple more games I'll start incorporating some tiebreakers. This weekend NT hosts Troy, and USA. NT hosts Denver to end the season, but a big game to watch out for is @FIU. WKU and MTSU have gotten back on track now, and should end up in the top 5 when all is said and done with USA and Troy dropping out. The top 8 teams make the conference tournament, which will be hosted by MTSU.

  30. I agree that those things factored in to the attendance. However, wouldn't you say that McCarney getting out and selling the program, meeting with all incoming freshmen, and us having a new head coach who is a legit D-1 head coach had a positive effect on the attendance rather than "killing" it?

  32. If people aren't coming because of the Tulsa game, they are not fans! If anyone expected the turn around to come this quick, they have not been around this program for 20 years. Don't come them! You will run off the best Coach the Mean Green have had in years! Coach Jones will see, Dallas doesn't care about the Mustangs. Despite his healthy, he will see this and move along. Now, with a grand new stadium, and grand new coach, we MUST put our NOW on hold and "believe what the near future will bring". It will happen! Come on...let the ride continue! PLEASE!

  33. I have been to two coach's shows and submitted every time on facebook. All questions were screened and ignored. Everyone at the Coach's Show is scared of the open mike and incurring the wrath of Mac and RV if moves are questioned. I was at Tulsa. The tackling was pathetic. We never played inspired after that one yard goal line fiasco. Dunbar left and Dunbar right will not cut it the rest of the year. If we don't get more exotics ( as Coach Fry used to call them) in our playbook you'll start to see an eight man front. But really the defense took a giant step backward in this game and needs more work on fundamentals just after they seemed to have worked on those before IU.We don't have the players just to hammer the middle IMHO those are wasted plays. BTW the Tulsa paper said TU hoped to schedule more "cup cakes" like North Texas in the future. If those kinds of remarks don't get players inspired to improve then they have still not bought in.

  34. I hate it when people use this excuse. If only the hadn't thrown 2 interceptions? If only they hadn't scored so many points? If only we had converted on 4th down? Well guess what??? That IS WHAT HAPPENED! Its stupid to say lets "pretend" that something didn't happen to make yourself feel better. What, are you just going to blissfully ignore it? You have to look right at your mistakes and point them out, that is the only way to improve. Not by pretending they didn't happen. People on this board feel like you can't say we played bad, like there has to be a positive outcome. Like its taboo to say we sucked. We showed we could play better and instead played worse this game. I am fine with team's having more talent and executing well, they did their job. What gets me is when we leave players wide open on every play, and can't wrap up a tackle. Thats on us. Don't sugar coat things and hide our mistakes.

  40. I've been seeing perhaps a loose definition of nepotism or brother in law special regarding McNulty's first start over Osborne. Can't say that I see it. But, I can't say it's not there either. Look, lets see exactly what we've got- a coach that's in this for the long haul tuning up for conference play. His starting quarterback is out (I sincerely believe had DT played, this might have been winnable), he's not completely sold on his back up who, after coming in cold, played extremely well, but he has a very intriguing freshman who has shown promise. He's not just looking to this year, he's seeing who his horses are for a while in the ultimate performance test- a live game against a good opponent who has played a murderer's row schedule. Yeah, he made freshman mistakes, as true freshmen at quarterback usually do (I present the argument of Andy Dalton, arguably the best quarterback not named Colt that has come from the state of Tx in recent years, made terrible idiotic mistakes), but he did move the ball. Finishing and killer instinct are learned traits through experience. However, I highly doubt that a friendship with McNulty's father is the reason behind a start. I think he wanted to see what the kid had. He had moments, but he also had moments where $h1t the bed. The pitch to Lance on the goal line, the snap over his head, two epic fail throws, the list goes on. But, experience is the ultimate teacher. Remember, he has an invaluable tool set, especially one for Mike Canales's offense- a quarterback who can run. Also, I think that CBS's somewhat overzealous prediction of us in the bowl game added to a victory over a Big Ten team fueled the fire to what I still think are some insurmountable and unrealistic expectations about a rebuilding football team. I have raised my expectations, and I wholeheartedly believe we can finish with a winning conference record. Next year, I think a bowl game realistic. But, the improvement is there. Do we want instant success, absolutely. We are a microwave meal ready in 30 seconds, car washed while you wait one hour cleaner thirty minutes or it's free society. We expect results from a coach that we ponied up a ton of money for. And, he's doing it. We have more talent than we realized we had, but it's still a long way to go. Let's not loose faith, fellow bleeders of the green that is mean. The team hasn't quit, they play hard to the whistle, and the mistakes they make, for the most part, are in an effort to make something happen. C.S. Lewis wrote "experience- the most painful of teachers". This is how they're learning.

  42. Yeah, UNT is a must win for FAU, just like FAU is a must win for UNT. I don't agree with everything he's saying in this blog, but it is an elimination game of sorts. I think that this is a very winnable game for UNT though, if we're firing on all cylinders for four quarters. We can't blow it out of the second half gates like against Houston, can't risk a fourth quarter turnaround like we did with Indiana, and we REALLY cannot wait to start moving the ball until the fourth quarter. I think if Thompson doesn't play, start with Osborn and supplement McNulty at key moments. And as usual, get Lance the ball. I hate referring to us as being a one-player team, but McCarney said so himself- we can't win if Lance isn't able to move the ball.

  43. I guess some people think it is OK to lose now for the sake of building for the future. I kind of disagree with that premise, since we have such a horrible recent history, and we need to win as much as we can NOW due to the potential of a conference realignment explosion in the near future. I kind of left Tulsa this weekend feeling that their fans think of us as an itty bitty inferior program four hours to the south, and that's kind of depressing when you consider that they are the smallest school out there. Competing with CUSA schools NOW is especially important, since members of that conference are probably who we are hoping to be hooking up with not too far down the road.

Maybe if they had a runnung game to go to when they were up 24, one of those picks doesn't happen. We don't know, because the ONLY weapon they have on offense is Romo. Go ahead, start either of the other 2 and see how you are out of this game by the second qtr
