  3. The fans are powered by the wind that blows through when the garage doors are open. The power generated by the indoor wind turbines turns on the lights. Near the lights are solar panels that power the mean green margarita machine on game days. This system saves us 30% on utilities. beware of decapitation.

  5. Leach is a rogue. Hiring a rogue head coach was the last thing that North Texas needed at that point in time - well, actually, at any point in time! All of the perceived benefits of hiring him would not have been worth the angst that would have undoubtably arisen. Winning is important - winning the right way, and with class, is far more important.

  9. Well some of this can be attributed to Clinton when he promoted more lax lending standards to meet Community Reinvestment Act goals. The repeal of the Glass Steagall Act didn't exactly help either as this created the "Too big to fail" banks we all became familiar with. Promoting low income/sub-prime mortgages to private banks in MBS's under Bush didn't help either. GSE's abusing their implicit guarantee to not fail from Congress was also no bueno. I mean lets face it. Not everyone has the means to be a homeowner and that shouldn't be forced upon people that should remain renters for life. The fed lowering interest rates to 1% after the dot com bubble clearly helped formulate this artificial housing boom that couldn't be sustained forever. The answer to your question is never. As the WAC continues down its path to desperately add new subprime additions (that have no business being in FBS or homeowners for that matter) to its failing family you can expect to see people continue to jump ship just like our own US banks were betting against America before the housing bust. After that happens the new subprime additions that received adjustable rate mortgages will default on their loans as it was clear all along that they were overvalued and never AAA quality. This will in turn require them to return to the Southland and into a deep recession. I imagine T.state or UTA's president (or whoever is now involved in this diluted conference) will gather its university and convince they must spend more to fix the problem and to get back to their ever short glory days in the WAC. Recent history shows this won't work and they'll end up worse than where they were most likely causing them to play D3 football for many years.

  11. Per the constitution, the State MUST balance the budget yearly - there is no debt. ...the "debt" is a result of losses ON PAPER underwriting state-wide and municipal bonds. ...and here is the most important point made in the article "Texas doesn't appear to be overextended. In a May report, Standard & Poor's gave the state an AA+ rating, citing its outperforming economy, strong cash management and constitutional limits on debt." ...so really, it appears the article was written so they could have a nice sensational headline, but really doesn't deliver the shock he headline would lead you to expect to find within. Perry isn't even running yet, and here come the hit-pieces. LOL!

  13. ---We had a surplus in 1999, in Texas and USA,(largest in history in USA and $6 billion in Texas) We lowered taxes or in the case of Texas, taxes were lowered or eliminated for some.... and now we have a problem...both places. None of your taxes in Texas were lowered unless you were certain businesses (often know as big contrubutors). I don't think lowering either helped the economy any either place. It is not so much about actually raising taxes but just restoring what once existed... In Texas that wouldn't be a dime more to most people since they got no cuts to start with. ---Some just don't get that less money comes in is a problem unless other sourses appear or the economy improves GREATLY which in Texas would mean more sales/gasoline tax collected ... which hits all of us and not just the buinesses that got those cuts. It is likely you got zero tax cuts from Texas and even the claims about a tax rate decline in property tax is off-set by increased evaluation..... pay attention... you likely got nothing....maybe higher local property taxes as a result..and these budget problems now and underfunded schools and social services. --- To all those so called conservatives [i think I am actually one, not a so called one] explain why 1788 - 2001 had a total national debt of $5.5 trillion, but after the eight "conservative administration years", 2001-2009, it went to $11 trillion and you say more cuts is a good idea. ... could it be things weren't as claimed. Don't say 9-11... or else also explain WWII debt which was many times more expensive.... even with the difference in the value of the dollar. You are being conned. ..

  15. I agree that he had potential, and sometimes showed flashes of it. But there are 100s of Darius Careys on college football rosters across the country - good potential, athletic...but too lazy or shortsighted to put in the work to fulfill it. Think about guys from small colleges like Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, and Terry Bradshaw who worked their asses off with the talent they were given. Then, think about the athletes who initially are in better situations and don't take advantage of them. Sure, we've not considered a traditional college power. But, we're miles ahead of where Payton and Rice came from, and about equal on the food chain (until our new stadium is ramped up) with where Bradshaw came from. Also, being in my 40s now with a wife, kids, mortgage, and the responsibility of trying to run a business, I have less patience for kids who are given opportunities at a young age and blow them. The Darius Careys of the world will have nothing but regret when they grow up and realize the opportunities they wasted because of stupid, off-the-field issues. Part of me wants to wish the kid good luck at McNeese; but, the other part cares less about his football abilities and just hopes he'll grow up and stay out of trouble. It's a shame.

  16. FLF, while I understand the frustration that is the root of your plan, it would be the worst thing for non-AQs. First, we would get cut out of the BCS money that we receive, diminishing our resources to compete. Second, it draws a more distinctive line between 'Us" and "Them". Right now, we can say "We're all BCS conferences" even though in our hearts we know we are not competing on a level playing field. Third, It would shut us out of any possibility of playing them in a BCS bowl. Finally, when playoffs do come around it would make a stronger case to leave us out of any discussion of gettng automatic berths into the playoffs. I think what we need to do is keep making the case that we belong here. America loves an underdog, and if you are not a fan of the AQ in the BCS bowl you are rooting for the BCS Buster. That is a marketing strength that keeps us around, and all the non-AQs need to exploit that strength.

  18. Not real sure where Flyer is getting his info regarding the catering, etc. as all those plans have not be finalized as yet, but he is correct that plans are to have both food and beverage service available when the Pavilion opens. The Pavilion is not air conditioned, so the big doors and fans will be great for fall football and other events planned for the Pavilion. rather than the lube joint as the EPA probably would nix that, I was thinking we could lease it out to Tim Love for a Love Shack...already has the doors! The pavilion is a great addition to the other benefits attached to being a member of the UNT Alumni Association. It should prove to be a great meeting place and tailgate/hangout area before games...big screen TV's should be nice as well. I hope everyone will come by and utilize the Alumni Pavilion during game days. Annual memberships are not expensive. A single annual membership costs $40...a joint annual membership costs $50. best deal going is a life membership at $500 for a single and $600 for a joint membership. Doesn't take many years for you to come out ahead on the life membership. And, just a note...as I am also a life member of the Oklahoma State Alumni Assoc., I was notified recently that OSU life memberships are going to be $1000 starting soon. So, as with most things at UNT these days, the membership costs for the UNT Alumni Association are really at bargain pricing. How long they will stay that way is any one's guess. Might want to consider stepping up to a life membership in the UNT Alumni Association before membership level costs are raised. Just sayin..... See you at the pavilion on Sept. 10th! GO MEAN GREEN!

  19. Tell him to call coach McCarney. I think that's the way it works with transfers - the player has to call the coaching staffs of the schools he's interested in attending. NCAA rules and whatnot.

  21. I hope this is an attempt at humor. The bay doors are a fantastic feature that allow an open air environment when the weather is really nice... you know... like in the Fall... when we play football... Common feature (and a great one) on many new bar and grills, at least around Fort Worth (which is miles ahead of that county to the East)

  22. We were able to save money by moving an existing Kwik Kar Lube. But, if anyone is wondering about the service bays, the roll-up doors will serve to open up the space on nice days in the fall - though I suspect they may be open every Saturday!

  23. If UT goes independent within the next couple of years (as rumors have been suggesting). Will the Big 12 Conference want to fill the hole with another large Texas school? Furthermore, if UNT has started to turn the winning streak around by that time, has a nice stadium with plans for expansion, a 35,000+ student population, great location, large alumni base, academic qualifications, a reputable basketball team, and an all around successful "non-revenue" sports program, would the Big 12 Conference think UNT is the school to fill the void? Let the discussion begin.

  25. Why I think that we'll have a much better team/record this season: Coach Dan McCarney Retention of Coach Canales, who put a lot of life in the team for its last five games Coach Clint Bowen, improved WKU in one season; bowl seasons under Mangino We can't possibly have as many injuries this year Coach Kent Riddle, who built the special teams at Boise State that made the Broncos special Higher morale and enthusiasm because more will get to play Coach Mike Simmonds, another builder of South Florida Better conditioned and won't have to play until their tongues hang out A new stadium! Lance Dunbar, Zach Olen and Brelan Chancellor Although we've had a few key losses the emergence of Zach Orr, Will Wright, Brad Graham, and D'Leon McCord and the return of J.J. Johnson, Steven Ford, Dewaylon Cook, James Hamilton, and Will Atterberry. In spite of the loss of a likely Hall of Fame linebacker I think that you will really like the 2011 defense.

  26. It may not be a bad move for UTA--you probably had more stability in the Southland, but the WAC should remain a better overall athletic conference. However, you seem to be missing the point when others have referred to the new WAC as the new Southland. The thing with the WAC is, they are being overrun with teams straight out of the Southland. It's been a long time since UNT (1996), ASU (1987), and ULL (1982) were in the SLC. And LaTech was another former SLC team now in the WAC, if you want to look at it that way. But right now, the WAC is scrounging for member schools, the Belt is not.

  30. This kid is a trouble-maker off the field. I know for a fact that he was recently involved in the jumping of another student at a party. He was the driving force behind it an he and his friends beat up some kid. And this was the weekend after he got kicked off the team. He runs with a pretty questionable crowd and there have been other rumors of his involvment in other incidents. Nothing I know as fact so I wont put it out there. Oh well, he is done, and so is his football career. Others now have the chance to step up and I believe they will.

  35. My little theory is this: Universities that have many syllables in their names (not counting "University") naturally tend to be referred to by their initials: UAB, UCLA, SMU, UCF, UNC, etc. It's just easier for people to use the initials. Obviously there are many exceptions. I don't think schools make a concerted effort to use one or the other, it's just how it is. North Texas is a quick name to verbalize. Plus, its got a nice "ring" to it. Regarding the UNT vs North Texas debate, I realize that most people on this board are in the North Texas region, but I suggest that "UNT" will mean nothing to people in most parts of the country.

  38. Wasn't planning to buy it begin with. The new stadium wasn't going to be in it and neither were the uniforms since the dev team is usually a year behind, especially when a program has major changes during the tail end of the development phase and pre-release. And the music? I solve that by adding my own tracks anyways.

  39. I'm waiting until next year anyways... when all of the conferences will be set (hopefully) and they will have had time to put our new stadium and uniforms into the game... i remember somebody said it would be too late for them to put the stadium in the game... and our own athletic department hasn't even unveiled our new uniforms yet

  40. No surprise here. Our stadium isn't completed yet so there's no way it was going to be in the game and we don't know what the uniforms are going to look like so how could they be in the game?

  41. OK, I misspoke about not responding...I have to respond to this ... these are, I believe, past president's of TWU's Alumni Board of Directors...not paid staffers. I can assure you that each and every president, past and present, of the UNT Alumni Association Board is also a grad of UNT as is every single board member. Just another indication that sometimes what one THINKS is the truth is not really the fact of the matter. I am trying to take this off-line by inviting Silver for a couple of beers at my expense and some good calm conversation. Still waiting......

  44. UTA doesn't need to play in Jerry World. They already have an on-campus stadium. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=153618128022127&set=o.144489345589775&type=1&theater I want to keep playing UTA. I like playing Texas St. I would not mind playing La. Tech and UTSA more often. I don't want to be in the WAC. Now I would like the Sun Belt to add a Texas team so UNT could get a conference rival.

  45. WOW! Just WOW! Where to start? First, why would the executive director or any paid staffer of the Alumni Association care to get involved in a dialogue on the board. Silly. You have seen where that gets RV, right? But, oh, Silver, I see you continue to be one to never to let anything like actual information and knowledge here and there get in the way of a flamable post or to keep one from pointing the finger at someone else for something someone thinks has been done wrong or poorly. It is well known that I am now on the board of the Alumni Association and have been associated with the Denton Chapter of the Alumni Association for many years. It's not like no one from the Association has been actively trying to drum up support. You want a dialogue on here? Funny...there is not much chance of a proper and calm dialogue on here, but I am happy to meet over a beer and have a real face-to-face chat about the Alumni Association if you care to do so. Like lots of things that get posted here, and lots of the blame that gets tossed around by folks who are more than happy to "let someone else do it" and just sit back and take pot shots, the facts are often lost in the fray. Not crediting you, of course, for all that, but to throw the Alumni Association under the bus as the place for the "blame" regarding what you perceive to be a lack of support for traditions, is simply ill-informed and mean-spirited. And, of course you are correct, no need for an AD if one doesn't have a good cheer or a great pre-game routine for the fans. That's, of course, the only reason for an AD and a full athletic department department in the first place, right? I don't even think you believe that deep down in that grumpy ole heart of yours. Have any idea about the history of the Alumni Association at UNT and the support it has received from the university and its alums through the years? How many people do you think work in the Alumni Association offices compared to like sized universities? What's the budget? How many members does it have compared to like sized universities? What programs and traditions does it support and has it continued to support year after year? Take me up on the offer for a beer (or two or three...it might take longer than one) and I'll provide what info I can for you about what YOUR alumni Association is doing. I assume you are not a member since if you were you would be receiving regular communications from the Association regarding everything it is up to these days. Plus, in the several years that i have been giving my time to the Association, I have never seen you at any of our sponsored events. Sometimes being more informed is just a matter of being involved.....even a little. Like a lot of things going on at UNT across the board today, lots of improvements have been made. It's just too bad that so many people seem to refuse to see it or acknowledge the progress being made. I've tried to PM you, but seems your box is full or the PM function is turned off for you. However, you do seem to have one tradition down pat...that of seeming to only find the negatives you perceive in everything that is UNT.

  46. --- The ignorance of the gun group amazed me.. The gun manufacturers and gun stores are claiming the current administration wants to ban guns. It is great for gun and ammo sales as everyone rushes to get one while they can.... Reminds me of a couple of weeks ago when I was in Toronto, Canada... Supposedly the people working in liquor stores where going on strike.. Guess what-- the day before the expected strike -- they broke all one day sales records.... and guess what happened then ...no strike. ---Rumors of gun bans are great for business and improves NRA membership... no one is about to ban guns... maybe some extreme assault weapons but not guns in general.. beside we have had some gun CONTOLS for years... sawed off shotguns are illegal and have been for a long time as well as many other controls. ---May the gullible ones waste more money on guns.. Besides when was the last time in American History did citizens need guns to defend themselves against a totalitarian government...??? Never??. [ PS: the Indians in West Texas are not a threat anymore either , they closed Ft. Davis over 100 years ago] We may need some for personal self protection and even to kill rattlesnakes etc. but not an assault gun in a war type situation. ---For what it is worth...I am not anti gun ...I am a West-Texan and own about a half dozen or so of various sizes...... but I am anti-stupid....and just can't believe how gullible some people are. _______________ ---I also have heard some right-wing churches are against birth control and want them banned ..... better stock up on birth control pills and condoms while they are still legal...LOL
