  1. Look at our last APR report to see Dodge's contribution to the program. We aren't losing scholarships now.

  2. First of all, the argument stating alot of stadiums, especially really old ones, do not have a walkway is invalid at best. The center walkway is (as someone said earlier) at grade level, or closer thereto. Meaning, when you buy your ticket, walk into the stadium, you head down a level (or very slightly sloped) path, into the stadium at a center walkway. The PRIMARY reason for this walkway is required NOW for Americans with Disablilties Act. This isnt JUST a walkway, the front edge of it is where the handicapp/Wheelchair seating will be. Why couldnt we enter the stadium at the top and THEN walk down to all the seats? Because then you would have to depress the stadium from the top row, down completely into the ground. Look at the photos and do the math yourself. Nobody would dig out an new stadium and completely depress it into the earth. Literally picture this. Take a cereal bowl, and lay it on top of your kids sandbox, Now PUSH it all the way down until the rim is flush with the sand. Ok now picture that cereal bowl being like a gazillion times that size. Really? Are you kidding me? That's a crap-load of dirt people. Sereiously, that would have added millions of dollars just to dirt excavation. Please drop this argument, do yourself a favor, go visit the stadium. It's the nicest thing with a center walkway you've ever seen. The reason is this (and someone else said it earlier also)

  3. I've always resented the fact that visiting fans (football and basketball) can walk up to the ticket window 30 prior to kick/tip and get tickets in the same area Mean Green season ticket holders sit. I know the goal is to sell every ticket possible, but I'd sure to explore the notion of only selling general admission tickets on game day. Force people to either buy season tickets or sit in the end zone or with the visiting fans.

  4. Hey, Deep...if you live close enough to come up, let me know and I'll take you over and introduce you to several of the "new folks" working athletic development and ticket sales. Or, better yet, give Cooper Jones a call and set up a introduction meeting with his team and then step over and meet the new ticket folks. They are "good folks" and definitely have goals. I know there have been some missteps here and there, and that is too bad for all concerned, but these folks are working hard to get the numbers up and to bring more people both to and back to the Mean Green. I think we all hope that their efforts pay off. If all you recall are the "Mandy days" then you are in for a very pleasant surprise indeed. But, really, no problem meeting and getting to know these folks. I'll buy the beer afterwards if you want me to set this up!

  5. Step back a bit there UNTcrazy727 on the firing stuff. There is a brand new team in town focusing on seat sales and season tickets. The old regime is really pretty much gone. Now, let's just give the new team a chance to see what they can do. So far the reports are pretty darn positive with all the suites sold, more than half of the club seats sold and season ticket sales ahead of this time last year. I agree that the support for UNT has been woeful at best when it comes to season ticket sales, but game day attendance has been on the rise, and should be way up this season with the opening of the new stadium. For UNT to have under 3000 season tickets sold is truly a shame...I saw some Oklahoma State folks on their board whining recently about having sold only 31,000 season tickets so far this year...and they are predicted by some to be an early season pick in the Top 10! So, I guess numbers can be relative, but UNT needs to have more support and the folks are out trying to get that support "in the house". Notice the billboards, the radio talk, the new stadium, the new coaching staff, the new athletic dept. development and sales staff members, etc,, etc. I think you might be a tad late to the party with the "shows pathetic support" thing from Alumni and fans, as that train left the station years ago. No denying the pathetic support part at all. We all know area high schools who sell more than 2500 season tickets, right? So, now we will see where this goes with the new sales and promo efforts and the new stadium/coaching staffs, etc. I am right now thinking it's going in the right direction. I just hope many many more people jump on the season ticket bandwagon and SOON! GO MEAN GREEN!

  6. The problem is the lying. Going on Rachel Madow (the hard hitting journalist that she/he is) and yucking it up like a high schooler ("I wish that were me".. backhanded self-compliment just shows the arrogance of this @ss) while completely denying that he sent the photos and saying that the photos either 1) weren't of him or; 2) altered photos of him is the reason this immoral idiot needed to resign. Good riddance, self-involved %rick. EDIT: What a joke of a "journalist"

  7. Dodge is a good man but he wasn't ready. He's on the right track now. He'll come out of the assistant job at Pitt a better college coach than when he went in. He should have left SLC and got to an assistant job first. It's a shame we had to suffer for a few years while he learned but so be it. NT and Dodge are both in better places now.

  8. It'll be interesting to see what Graham and Dodge can do with Big East talent. Still can't believe the two head coaches from two of my alma maters ended up at the same school during the off-season. Time to buy some Pitt gear? Anyway, this is what Dodge needs. Graham got his college coaching start with the Big East's West Virginia ten years ago, making the jump from Allen H.S. head coach to Mountaineer LB coach in 2001. He was an assitant, then defensive coordinator for five years before getting his shot at Rice. He turned them around in a flash. Dodge can do the same. I'm convinced that he's got the ability to coach at this level or higher. He just didn't bring along experienced guys to help him when he came here. That was always the thing that stuck with me. Even in the Sun Belt, you always have guys like Ricky Bustle and Howard Schnellenberger who had coached at that level to decades, been to national championship games and all. They know what they are doing, even if the talent level isn't quite that same as most BCS AQ's. I think Dodge handcuffed himself by being overly loyal to guys he had high school ties with. At the time, he probably underestimated the help he'd need It'll be interesting to see these guys together with Big East talent - defensive guy Graham and offensive guy Dodge. Spencer Leftwich is on the staff...as well as several guys Graham coached with in the mid-2000s at West Virgina who spent the last three years at Michigan. It's a well-rounded staff, most accustomed to that conference and that level off play.

  9. I agree that he left the program better in a lot of ways. And, without more injuries than any program could survive, I think he had a chance at a winning season last year. However, the only place he ever won on a consistent basis was a Southlake. Easy to do with better players and facilities than everyone else. It is probably best for us that he didn't win last year. He is a good guy and I wish him well, but he was never going to take us to the level that McCarney will. I'm glad he landed on his feet and I wish him all the success that Jerry Moore has found.... somewhere else.

  12. I think I heard several years ago that new stadiums had to be designed to be able to have all fans removed from the stadium within a certain time frame. Most of your older stadiums have smaller walkways because they were build many years ago and are grandfathered in. Any new additions to these older stadiums include crowd movement in there new additions.

  15. Sorry, wasn't aware they just hired a staff. In that case, no, don't fire them lol lets see what they can do. I know everyone has been saying how bad the support is for years, but it's depressing to see a number like this that reminds you how bad it is. However, things do look like they're getting better, which is encouraging.

  16. This situation seems to me, upon reflection, as being an indicator of where game attendance ranks in terms of personal priorities. One theory is that people know there will be good walk-up seats available on gameday so they wait to see if the weather will be to their liking, or something comes up that they would enjoy doing more, etc. It all goes back to what numerous posters have said for years: WIN. If we can put some wins in the book, we will put more butts in seats and build more than a casual fanbase. Now you do have to admit that us diehards have not enjoyed the on-field action since 2004; we continue to re-up because we are fully committed and plan our fall activities around the schedule. There just aren't enough of us that think that way...YET. JMHO

  17. Billboards! Something we've debated for years! TCU also has theirs up around FW now as well. Saw three driving in from Granbury last weekend. I love our billboards...but here's something I'd like to point out that you can chew on: They don't say "NORTH TEXAS" on them anywhere...but, there is a "UNT" in the corner. Anyone? I thought if we used UNT on things...like, say, helmets - that people wouldn't know who we were. But, on billboards advertising the new stadium, it seems to be okay. How will people know we're North Texas? The billboard just says "MEAN GREEN" and "UNT."

  19. Agreed. Even with the injuries, we finally got over the FAU hump...and on the road, no less...beat bowl qualifier MTSU - also on the road - and came within a point of Lousiana and five of Arkansas State. Either one - the Louisiana game or Arkansas State game - going the other way, and we'd have been 4-4 in conference. Blocked extra point after a valiant comeback at the end of the Louisiana game.... Couldn't finish off second half drives in the ASU game - three second half field goals - with fourth string QB Chase Bain leading the way... Could never quite catch up to Troy in 41-35 loss. Matched them TD for TD, but FGs early in the second and third quarter for them was the difference. We were toe-to-toe all game long with the Sun Belt Co-Champs with our ragged, beaten group in November. Almost got over on Kansas State as well. Tough game...again ending with Baine at QB in the fourth. There's some fight in those guys on our roster. Hopefully, this coaching staff takes what remains of them and shapes them from a group that "gets close" into a group that "knows how to close." I'm betting it can be done.

  20. Amazing how the guy decides to resign just after his wife gets home! A tad late, sir, but at least you finally resigned. Scumbag that you are! This has absolutely nothing to do with being democrat or republican, it has everything to do with one's moral compass and understanding of right and wrong.

  22. IMHO, Coach Dodge was successful at NT irrespective of his W - L record. Did coach make some mistakes? Sure he did.....BUT....name me one person who has not made a mistake. If anyone has ever read a management book one of the underlying themes is that you grow from your mistakes. His growth took him to Pitt and I can only wish him the best of luck as I am sure that most of you will do. Only those who have not yet learned failure will wish him otherwise. Coach Dodge's success will be measured.....as the French say...."succes d'es time."

  26. You are correct, sir. It goes back to that old high school formula F = M x A. When the mass is in the batteries, and not in the framework, you are increasing your chance of injury BECAUSE the car is heavier.
    1 point
  27. I can buy the weight argument. I've seen crashes where the victim's car rolled several times over. I would think the heavier the car, the less likely to tumble. Having said that, there is a ton of skepticism in this thread, and people are nit picking. We need to find alternatives to oil, people. Batteries may or may not be a commitment, but we can all agree they are an effort to get away from fossil fuels, right?
    1 point
  28. --Personally I doubt the weight from the battery would help protect one much.. In fact I would think the opposite.. Weight from larger steel supports and frame in larger cars do. It really isn't the weight but what that weight is and does.

  29. Volt Crash Test Ratings "Small but safe: The Volt and Leaf are classified as small cars, with their overall length, width, and passenger capacity in line with their peers. But their hefty battery packs put their curb weights closer to midsize and larger cars. The Leaf weighs about 3,370 pounds and the Volt about 3,760 pounds. This compares to about 3,200 pounds for Nissan's Altima, a midsize car, and about 3,580 pounds for Chevrolet's Impala, a large family car. Larger, heavier vehicles generally do a better job of protecting people in serious crashes than smaller, lighter ones because both size and weight influence crashworthiness." -International Institute for Highway Safety

  30. Government employee labor unions are very dangerous IMHO. Going back to our history lessons we were taught that labor unions were vital and important in order to protect workers from being abused and exploited by the evil and greedy capitalist owners. Fine, we all got that. But here, we're talking about protection from the government, aren't we? The same entity the traditional labor union look to in order to enforce contracts or resolve disputes. Really? Let's see how this works. Government employees organize in a union and then campaign, support, elect (using their membership numbers) govenment officials. Then they blackmail the same government officials they just put in office (I mean negotiate with the government officials) on their contracts (pay, benefits, pensions, etc.) using their ability to keep or remove them from office as a major factor in the blackmail/negotiation (or maybe it is just payback for the most recent election). Governmnent employee unions are in a position of strength and extract consessions from the government (i.e. taxpayers) as part of a never-ending political process of quid pro quo that ensures the same government officials return year-after-year and government employee unions are rewarded with uber-generous contracts. 31. The batteries are recyclable and with the volt, it's guaranteed for 100,000 miles. A Volt will take anyone living in the city (or the suburbs) on their average commute of 21 miles each way on just battery power. For those living out in West Texas, it has a small gas generator that powers the electric motor for extended drives. The Nissan Leaf has a stated range of 100 miles on a full charge. Both fully recharge in 8 hours on 120 and 4 hours on 220. This might not be too exciting for some people, but it's a really great start. With the technology improving on wind chargers, an affordable home wind charging unit (or solar panel unit) to use primarily on your electric car might be available in the near future.

  38. Well, I guess you and I just have different standards for "right and wrong" even for a single guy. Sending "explicit" tweets, etc. to underage kids is "scumbag" action in my book for anyone...married or single. And, I hold my elected officials to an even higher standard of ethical behavior as they are represented this great nation of ours. His being married or not has little/nothing to do with his "scumbagedness". Maybe its a fine line with you, but I think we all know the line was crossed...single or not.

  40. I wish Coach Dodge nothing but the best going forward and I thank him for his efforts at UNT. Nice to see that he has positive things to say about his time at UNT. Yes, Both Coach Dodge and Coach McCarney are correct regarding academics at UNT. Much improvement was seen under Dodge's watch, but much was still to be done...Dodge got the train back on the tracks and McCarney will drive it to its destination. There is absolutely no reason to think that Coach Dodge will not be successful at Pitt, and it is a good bet that he will one day again be a HC at a D-1 program. That time will come and he will be much better prepared for what he will be facing. So, absolutely, both UNT and Coach Dodge are in better shape and in a better position now to move forward. Good luck Coach Dodge and GO MEAN GREEN!

  43. --- Democrats are decent people too. They aren't like some try to portray them... Both groups have their rats.. Gingrich was one of the worse and made Clinton look like a saint if you really looked into everything that he has done. I don't need to go into details. They may not always agree with the other party but they are patriotic and mostly Christian people. Personally I hated Iraq from day one because I did not want to see Americans die for what I thought was a poor reason... Guess what, the WMD didn't exist and Iraq had zero to do with 9-11 although some implied that they did. As for other reasons, compare the economy at the end of 2000 with the end of 2008. Also compare the national debt of those two years.... it doubled.... which means one administration's debt equaled all 42 previous ones. So much for the claim of being financially conservative.. The claims a lot of people try to present just aren't accurate. .

  47. This...I drive by daily as well and can attest to the traffic. There will be plenty of opportunities to really "study" this sign, the phone # and the web address while doing about 10MPH or less. I do, however, agree with drex (and drex has a very good handle on this sort of thing) that 80% of all billboards are unreadable...and certainly at highway speeds, but I did like seeing this one up...and the location seems great. If you drive by it more than once you can focus on the part you want....like the phone number or the web address...does seem like a long web address, doesn't it? I just like the fact that we are seeing UNT billboards around the area and around the metroplex. The Mean Green definitely have something great to sell, so it's good to see the word getting out in multiple ways these days. Can't tell you how many billboards I have noticed in my 30+years of commuting down I-35 and back...most are not fully readable the first couple of times by them, but soon enough I get it all from the ones I am interested in enough to look at more than once. I guess the mantra "less is more" when it comes to billboards is a good thing. GO MEAN GREEN!
