  1. I think the more important question is who will be the next head coach after the next one? Thoughts?

  2. Tune: Got drilled by the defender. Not sure where Char screwed up on that one. Ford: Broken leg. Not sure you can condition a bone not to snap when the right amount of force is applied but I am not a doctor. Jones: Had his leg landed on by a Clemson defender and it bent all kinds of wrong. Pretty sure it wasn't Char but maybe he still has eligibility left. JJ Johnson: Got his foot stepped on by another player. Char should have seen that one coming. Neal: Out for year Cook: Out for year Carey: Hand injury that is affecting his play: Char told him to lift the furniture with his legs.

  5. I don't care if Dodge is fired or not. I was 100% for his hiring. Yes, I did question why he was retained for another year but said I would honor RV's decision. Still do. I would love nothing more than to see him succeed here at UNT. Last Saurday night we had a bad game. We made too many mistakes but so did Rice.I knew this would be a very tough, physical game and unkike others did not see this as cake walk. But the bottom line is, we were winning this game dispite the mistakes and poor play. We weren't being blown out. When our offense took the field, the ball on our on two yard line, 98 yards of open green, nursing a small lead with time running out our kids where totally unprepared for that scenario. They and the coaching staff were completely and totally lost. We should have practiced that same scenario at least 50 times in Spring and Fall ball against our defense and any formation they could have thrown at us. Thats called coaching Yes, I understand the fear of being called for holding in the endzone on a pass play, but the coaches should have drilled all players to the point that they knew and understood the consequences. When our offense ran onto the field they were already defeated. The coaching staff lacked the confidence in our players, the players lacked the confidence in themselves and all because the the coaches had failed to prepare them for just this exact possiblity. Thats when and how we lost the game. Is that Dodge's fault? The offensive coordinator's fault? The kids fault?

  6. Again, we have no present opening for a HFC at North Texas and I know you are speculating but... ...if you're talking about Mike Leach, last I heard he still has a lawsuit pending toward the state of Texas (and I stand to be corrected on that) but IMO no Texas university with any degree of intellect would touch that situation the way it stands now, especially a public university in the Lone Star State. A school like UNT doesn't need to get on the wrong side of the Texas political scene, especially since we are trying for Tier 1 status? Coach Leach was said to be unhappy in Lubbock and was trying to get out of RedRaiderLand right before his teams had their sudden national (Top 10) success, then he gets into a bru-haha with his Tech Prez' and Board of Regents who had instructed him to follow certain procedure on the big mess he created with Craig James' (of Celina) son and Coach Leach refused to follow what his bosses did not ask him to do but told him to do, yada, yada, yada........... ......Leach's talent as an X's & O's coach are unquestioned, but his ability to obey the people who hired him is public knowledge so the question remains......does UNT take a huge gamble with that kind of hire? Maybe so--maybe not but I am almost certain that our *Holy Tribunal (which I fondly call our Prez, AD and Hired Gun Consultant, ie, Chuck Neinas with high regard and "no" sarcasm mean't at all); yet, I don't think they will be consulting with any of us for our opinions on Mike Leach or anyone if the time comes for us to hire another coach. I personally don't think they would touch Coach Mike with a 10 foot poll since their own judgement could eventually be questioned in hiring such a known maverick. * Actually, I will add that North Texas AD Rick Villarreal would be the main cog in the wheel of the tribunal in hiring a new coach, but I'm sure he would be asking the other 2 of their opinions on the matter as well. Rick V has some pretty good coaching contacts in the NCAA and his coupled with Consultant Chuck Neinas would probably come up with a pretty fair candidate but... ...if Todd Dodge and his team emulate our 2001 team and march thru the SBC and then a bowl invite to the Big Easy, all of this discussion become a rather moot point. That is why these "change the coach" kind of threads may want to be delayed until the SBC conference season is at least half over before. Many of us are still pulling for TDodge and his Mean Green football team to repeat the history of our 2001 season when there was a pretty, cool 12'th hour come-back. BEAT ARMY!

  9. I understand that you aren't happy with where the program is, none of us are either...seriously, I do not like where we are one bit. That does not mean though, that every last shred of optimism needs to be battered down into the ground like a whack-a-mole machine. That kind of takes all the fun out of it, dude. Yeah, we lost, but I had a hell of a time hanging out with my friends cheering on my school. I think MckinneyMiner said it best in his "Perspective from a New Season Ticket Holder" thread. There is a lot more to all this than just the football game.

  10. Well, to be fair, was the board really ready for such a ground-breaking thread? A lot of folks are just now taking this question on for the first time.

  11. If North Texas hires a new coach, I'd like to see us hire a coach with significant FBS experience who would have instant media credibility by virtue of his past jobs. If UTSA could get Larry Coker, SMU June Jones, UCF George O'Leary and Ohio Frank Solich, perhaps UNT could get a Bill Callahan, Tommy Bowden or Phillip Fulmer. That new stadium and the Dallas media market are nice carrots.

  12. I have to agree with KRAM on this. Last week everyone was giddy and emmitt01 was predicting 8 wins out of this team after our game against Clemson. Rice rolls to town, we start off horribly, kicking game is killing us, without our starting center, a starting DB, essentially our 5th DB and key WR that are all lost for the season, and lost by 1 to a team that hammered us by 50+ a couple of years ago. Yes, we gave this game away and I'm as frustrated as the next fan, but my goodness, we are only two games into a 12 game season and everyone has given up on this team. Pretty ridiculous at this point, IMHO.

  15. wondering aloud how many times people have called for the coaches head after a win, then imploring everyone to ignore the fact that this coach has won exactly 5 times in 38 games. Special teams / defense will be this team's demise or Salvation. Right now it looks much closed to demise. 1-4 with ganes left against Troy, MTSU, and K St mean it's time to start the private search

  16. Anybody think Spencer Leftwich is sitting back and feeling better about his decision to leave in August? I imagine he is sighing relief every moment of the day. It may have been a crappy move, but he probably protected his best interests more than anyone else in the mess right now.

  18. If I am not mistaken, our luck changed the day we removed the script North Texas from the helmets and replaced it with the current North Texas font. To change our luck again, we must change the helmet logo to the SOW. It's the only way to solve these prolems. The football gods have spoken.

  19. I wouldn't say NO experience; he has spent the last 10 years at Texas, Alabama, Syracuse, and Rice. That's for the most part big time college football. And he can recruit in Texas. And since we are all turning into RV's personal accountants, he is making $250,000 a year right now at Texas which I think we can compete with.

  22. Your reply struck me as a little ironic. Regarding what I put in bold, seems to me that you were the one in need of some attention. Isn't that why you stand up in front of 20,000 and make a fool of yourself, to get some attention? Then again, I kind of appreciate it when people act like this in public. It provides a nice teaching moment for my two young sons on personal conduct and class.

  23. I don't think the Texas Longhorns would say that the Rice Owls were so terrible. Dodge probably has to win the SBC to keep his job--the same scenario for DD in 2001. Lets just all be patient and see what happens. What the hell else do we have to do anyway? GMG!

  24. Of course not. Why would everyone have to play by the same rules? You could say the same thing about the Belt though...when are we playing WKU at the Pit again?

  25. NO, you don't fire Coach Dodge if we lose to Army. The mandate from RV was to win seven, or so everyone on the board seems to think. So, the idea that you even consider firing your head coach with the possibility of seven wins remaining and before you even get into conference play is pretty lame. I understand the frustration after the last few losing seasons and some blowout losses. It gets old and gets tough to hang in with the program. I get that, but I also believe in honoring contracts and agreements. Yes, even in college athletics and even if only one side seems to think contracts and agreements are meant to be honored. This isn't some video game or TV drama where everyone walks away happy and all the "good guys" aren't really hurt, this is the real deal. In the "real deal" one honors their word...well, the ones with character and dignity do at least. GOOD LUCK COACH DODGE and Co. BEAT ARMY!!!!!

  26. At my age (near 60) one begins to sound like a broken, uh, CD? I still defer to the SBC "2'nd season" which saved another UNT coach's job when he won that league's 1'st conference championship (with even 1 SBC loss vs. ULM) and the Mean Green then went to the Big Easy with a 5 & 6 season. You do not fire a coach who has taken his team to a bowl game--even in his 4'th year at 5 & 6 and FWIW...DD did not have his 1'st above .500 year until his 5'th year at UNT then his next 2 were over .500 with his last 2 well under .500. IMO, Coach Dodge (or any coach for that matter) deserves no less treatment if he pulls this thing off a la a similar scenario to our 2001 season. NOTE: Even if we lost at FAU, it is still mathmatically possible for UNT to win the SBC if other contenders are beating up on each other. Thats what sorta' happened in 2001. Come on, folks, give it a break until at least half way thru the SBC season and then if the situation is dire with Dodge's wins and losses, eat your heart out and go for it with these threads non-stop! GMG!

  33. It will be Jeff Bower if RV can get him to move to Dallas. I think his wife is from Dallas. But they have a few extremely good personal reasons to stay in H'burg area. If not Bower, then I look for Kragthorpe to be the new HC. Both are solid choices but I do not look for them to be popular choices with the fans of GoMeanGreen.com. Good luck this year I will make it to a couple of games.

  35. Lesson #1 O Ye On Your 2'nd or 3'rd Post on GMG.com (and welcome BTW): Don't fire anyone until they're fire-able. Dickey made one of the greatest coaches come-backs in NCAA history when in his own 4'th year (which was under .500) he delayed his own Waterloo. Now many of us on this board have different interrpretations of his 9 year stay at UNT and I will leave it at that but the lesson learned is at UNT one probably has to wait till the SBC conference season is complete and even going to a bowl game with an under .500 W/L sealed the contract extension deal with Coach Dickey in 2001 and (in fact) gave him what would be an additional 8 years in Denton. If a similar scenario happened with TDodge this Fall & he didn't get an extension that would create a very interesting quandary for our UNT powers that be. Back To Dickey: Yet word was among fellow Nestors at that time (pre-MUTS game) was that AD Rick V was ready to pull the trigger after that game had we lost. That game was the 6'th game in 2001 and after that win we were 1 & 5......the rest is history. FACT IS: If we have not lost too many starters the rest of the season........."IF" UNT plays offense of the quality they did at Clemson and our Mean Green defense continues to improve post-Rice game, they can win the Sun Belt Conference because (let's face some more facts here): The SBC hardly has anything close to a BCS Bowl-Buster type of a program at this juncture of our 10 year history. If we're still part of the SBC on its 20'th Anniversary I hope we don't have to say the same thing. Whichever UNT HFC we have 5 years from today I hope gets us out of this Bottom 25 quagmire we've been mostly a part of since we regained NCAA D1 criteria in 1994. Some of us still sorta' like former conference-mate Boise State to be our model in Denton. Why not after what we all saw last Monday night with the Broncos? GMG!

  42. Speak for yourself. If RV can't handle a fan's opinion of the sorry-ass product he's put on display at Fouts, he should find another line of work. Bob didn't embarrass me by yelling about poor coaching to the person who thought we needed another high school coach to run a college program. He was telling the truth. Fun fact: Since 1980, only three high school coaches have been hired to run Division I-A (now FBS) schools. Two of them were at North Texas -- Dennis Parker and Dodge. RV bet the bank on a non-traditional hire and he busted.

  47. You don't know embarrassment, EagleGreen, you shoulda' been around here in 1981 with a 1 year coach who had 1 win and almost got us on NCAA probation to boot! That was (as Popeye would say) "embarraskin." Prediction: Rick V will not fire Todd Dodge on Monday or the next Monday or the next. If Todd Dodge goes 0 & 5, Rick V will probably still not fire him but rather (silently) start his private search for Coach Dodge's successor knowing how important that hire would be as we are on the eve of having a grand opening for a new football palace being built by the same people who built the Dallas Cowboy's jewel over in Arlington. Rick V has taken the worst AD job in NCAA D1 and made it a good job. He will probably move on to a more high profile job one day in the future. Yet.......for UNT to be building a new stadium during this national economy (near depression) is short of a miracle. I look for Rick V & Company to find a corporate sponsor in due time that will divvy up UNT's $30 million minimum amount requirement (which is what I saw as the minimum amount in some UNT publication). IMO, our stadium location makes that amount do-able. Someone already posted it but UNT has been a coaches graveyard except for Fry and Moore (who was only here 2 years). So, if Dodge is terminated, we really need to do the most extensive search for a HFC in our history so we have someone who somebody else wants to hire and FWIW..........that's when you know you've got something. NOTE: Boise State had 5 HFC's in the space of 10 years and did not miss a lick with their football success--that alone is one of the great success stories in NCAA history. Let Rick V do his thing...he's shown that he can. GMG!
