  1. ...and here's the BIG dilemma that clouds my thoughts on TDodge. I would like nothing better than to see Dodge turn it around at UNT and coach here for a long, long time. He is an absolute class act and seems to really want to be here (unlike previous coaches who shall remain nameless). However, we haven't even been competitive in our games against Troy with Dodge at the helm. The 45-7 loss was the worst beating I've ever witnessed, at this level, when you consider that we had 7 takeaways and still lost by 38! We hardly put up a fight against the best teams on our schedule year in and year out and that really, really worries me. I realize we were 19 points away from a winning record last season, but that was 19 points against a cream puff schedule. The really tough teams we played put us away quickly. If we manage to win 7 games this year, but are not at least competitive with Troy and MTSU (or whoever ends up winning the conference)....then I'd rather not see Dodge return. I don't know if that makes me a fickle fan, an idiot or just plain beaten down.

  2. Honestly, I am surprised that there was not any more discussion regarding the Ohio game. The was one of those games that we were evenly matched on with our opponent (a very good Ohio squad), but we could just not pull it out. I was not able to watch the game live...but listened to the whole thing on the radio. Needless to say...I wept like a baby and was absolutely sick to my stomach! However, and this is what I was after with this thread, THAT was the season changer right there. Period. We never rebounded from that. That took ALL of the wind out of our sails. It is like the team just had nothing left in them...a soul defeating loss. Having said that, if we can just get over the hump we could actually have a pretty decent SB team. I do not think we are even close to being a BCS buster...much less a near Top 25 team...BUT we could be a really good SB team and compete with the Troys, MTSU, et al... Man...are we due a break or what??? The tide has to turn this season, right??

  4. believe it or not, i have one of these bobble-heads. it has been sitting in my office for the past 34 years. i have no idea where it was purchased - my guess would be voertmans or the campus bookstore. it is represented as a '60s bobble-head, but i first began my studies at NTSU in 1970, and the bobble-head was probably purchased later in the '70s. anyway, i was floored at its "value" - $1,200 - that has given my wife and i a lot of laughs over the past couple of days. she always accuses me of being a pack-rat - guess it paid off this time. i still sing the fight song as "lets' give a cheer for north texas state........." UNT still sounds so foreign to this old-timer, even after 20 years of so of UNT.

  5. We'll never play another game in the past. It was a real heart breaker and a harbinger of things to come last season. There were many opportunities to win last season that evaporated...the team just did not know how to finish. In that game in particular, we needed to make one play and had at least three shots at it. This is a new season that is approaching quickly and another chance for this team to maximize its potential. It is not out of the question for this to be a 7-5 or even an 8-4 team if they can learn to play smart football in the fourth quarter and put people away.

  6. If we start off 0-5 or god forbid 0-6, i hope we fire TD and move on. I don't think we will and pray we don't but if we do its time to move on Regardless of how close those 6 losses are

  7. Clemson - L 41-24 (It's Clemson there but we show some flashes and the Clemson coaches say post game, "that teams gonna win some games this year) Rice - W 45-31 (Offense breaks out, their defense is worse than ours) Army - L 20-17 OT (Close but Army wins an ugly one) FAU - W 45-31 (We were close last year, they have a new QB) ULALA - W 31- 24 (Again, should have won last year) ASU - W 31-20 (Again Again, within 4 points a year ago, we start to figure out how to close) FIU - W 38-24 (Defense finding its groove and starts believing, Tune successfully directing the offense) WKU - W 58-40 (WKU still can't stop us, championship talk starting) Troy - W 24-21 (Sloppy game, UNT learns how to win) MTSU - L 35-32 (MTSU wins a classic conference show down. If we were at Fouts, the result would be flipped) ULM - W 42-31 (UNT takes out the previous loss on the Warhawks, starts getting in the bowl picture) KSU - L 42-38 (UNT pulls out all the stops on the last game at fouts but in the end a special teams TD by KState is the difference) 8-4 Bowl Bid (possibly New Orleans depending on MTSU?) When I look at this year's schedule and I look at the close losses we had last year, I think we win those games this year by simply not turning the ball over. That's why unless Tune just tanks in fall practice, I think this team is his. I don't see us putting the offense in another Freshman's (practically a freshman's) hands. Untimely turnovers were the death of this team last year. If Tune takes care of the ball, we will win some games. I think experience (coaching and playing) pays off this year.

  9. I agree with Don Harry's predictions and assessment of the upcoming season. However, will the Nacion de Mean Green be happy with a 6-6 season which will surely guarantee El Jefe Dodge of a couple more seasons.... just sayin. By the way, Muchas Gracias Don Harry for this forum.

  10. Just guesses like everyone else.. but why not? Clemson: 44 - 20 (L)- NT Defense is overwhelmed, but show signs of improvement. Rice: 38 - 24 (L)- Late comeback insnt enough, but Thompson improving. Army: 35 - 28 (L)- Still no answer for Army, but stay close in game. FAU: 31 - 14 (W)- NT due for win against Schnellenberger. Dunbar runs for 250. ULL: 35 - 27 (W)- Cajuns play tough game, NT Defense makes difference late. ASU: 35 - 24 (L)- 1st half lead hurts. NT secondary "bends" too much. FIU: 38 - 21 (W)- FIU is on the rise, but has no answer for Dunbar. WKU: 42 - 17 (W)- Blowout game. Hilltopper mistakes are NT opportunities. Troy: 38 - 20 (L)- Good game from Thompson, but NT Defense struggles against pass. MTSU: 45 - 14 (L)- The MUTS are likely SBC Champs. Too strong on both sides of ball ULM: 38 - 28 (L)- Dunbar and Thompson do well, NT secondary struggles but competes. K.State 45 - 14 (L)- Wildcats Bowl eligible,Dunbar gets NT single season rush record. Season outcome: NT goes 4-8. Lance Dunbar, Tyler Stradford, Kelvin Drake - 1st Team All-SBC, Derek Thompson, Jamaal Jackson, Tevin Cantly, and Craig Roberston - 2nd Team All-Sunbelt.

  12. Carl Sheffield is not coaching anymore. One of his athletes, Sammy Dabbs, has taken over his position and has done a great job at it the past couple of years. Watkins has hired former ACU coach Sam Burroughs as the distance/cross country coach. He took over ACU two years ago. The team he took over was a national championship team, and as far as I have seen, he did nothing with that team. This will be interesting to watch. He is a young guy that is energetic about his job, which is far opposite from what UNT had at this position.

  15. I wanted to thank everyone from GMG.com and several readers from our opposing conference schools as well for the wonderful well wishes, phone calls, letters and prayers this past week concerning the passing of my mother, Judy McKinney. It has been a difficult time for me and my family since her diagnosis 4 months ago. As can be imagined we were in and out of several clinics and hospitals with countless overnight stays. We dealt with six different doctors who had six different opinions as I know many of you know how that can be? It takes it’s toll on everyone involved. Both of my kids (ages 9 and 6) were absolutely connected at the hip with mom, so explaining to them what was going on during this time and what was about to happen has been the worst of it all for Darla and I but they seem to be coping well so far. As difficult as it was for us both it also gave me a wonderful opportunity to spend a lot of precious time with my mom to reminisce and laugh about the good times and there were a lot of them including when those times involved North Texas and she kept up with every event by reading GMG.com. Here is a photo the day PKC90 and I enrolled at North Texas and moved into The Oaks apartments on Bernard St, 1987. Mom is second from the left. We had some great times going to the games over the years including one of the New Orleans bowls. But I'll never forget in 1988 she and my grandmother, my girlfriend and I all traveled to Houston to watch the Mean Green play Rice in football. My roommate Brent Loyd was on the team that year and I made nearly every game. As you may recall NT had an amazing season that year, ranked #1 in 1-AA for six or so weeks, and even though we had lost the SLC earlier in the season there were some big wins and there was still a lot to play for before the playoffs started. NT jumped out to a pretty good lead against Rice and was having it's way with them, but during the game a freak, monsoon-type storm of biblical proportions just came out of nowhere forcing a delay in the game and sent just about everyone running for cover. Everyone but me, my girlfriend and a few others, and of course, my mom. She stood down by the side lines with her hair blowing sideways, makeup running down her face, soaked to the very core and yelling at Corky to keep his foot on the gas as he ran off the field with the team. It was hilarious and I’ll never forget it. That’s just the way she was with sports and life. During my high school games my teammates would look over at me and say….”Rick, your mom brought the cow bells again….” In fact Darla and I attended my 25th year high school reunion last night in Burleson and everyone I played baseball and football with had countless stories like that about her supporting the team from the stands. She loved life to the fullest and taught me and my two children to do the same. We will miss her dearly till we see her again. I have been asked about donations and I wanted to notify that in lieu of flowers I am requesting that they be made to a wonder non profit organization who help mom out considerably called Cancer Care Services of Fort Worth, at 623 S. Henderson St. Fort Worth TX, 76104. Their website is cancercareservices.org Thank you all again so very much, and I look forward to seeing everyone this fall. Rick

  17. A conference championship in basketball this year won't do it. We have got to win the first game in the big dance, because until then we are really only taken serious by ourselves. Unfortunately, football is the measuring stick, i.e. Kansas and the sweating that Bill Self was going through when he thought Kansas might be left out on the prairies of Kansas in the Big 12 circus.

I really, really, really really hope it does. It would make me very happy to be proven wrong.

  28. Exactly, that was my confusion. I was looking to purchase my tickets but can't find anything. I suppose if this is the event and the coaches will be speaking like they have in previous years, then I'm good with that. Beat the heat, I get it.

  29. Yeah, I saw this already as I indicated in my original post. If the 5K is the answer to "what's the big event?" then I'm very disappointed.
