Houston should be NT's biggest rival. We should play them every year. You guys should be jumping at the chance to get that started.

when you are ranked 110 out of 119 1a football programs its a little hard to schedule someone you can beat. it would be worse to get smoked by sfa or mcneese.

Our first game in Fouts was a win against South Dakota. I'd like our first game in the new stadium to be a win also. The Cowboys first game in the Cowboys Stadium was a lose to the Giants.

Leo Taylor was a tough runner who compares with the more modern running backs. He didn't get that many carries with the great passing game of Ramsey to Barry Moore, Ronnie Shanklin, etc. He did not have the speed of Cobbs, Dunbar, and a healty Thomas, but he ran as hard as any of them. Pegram was a much better back than he was given credit for. He played on bad teams with little blocking. I don't remember who the A&M back was when NT with Pegram played there, but he was highly honored. I remember thinking how much better Pegram was than he was. Only problem, most of pegram runs were under 3 yards; but they were maximum effort. I think Pegram was quicker than Cobbs and was a better receiver. IMO the best backs I have seen at NT were Taylor, Mike Jones, Bernard Jackson, Eric Pegrim, Cobbs, Thomas, Galbreath, Malcom Jones and Dunbar. I think Thomas had the best one year of any of them, but if I rated them based on a career contribution; Cobbs would be the best. Rating who was the best back is difficult because of comparing those who benefited from DD run first offense and others that played in a much more balanced offense. Best being defined is who is the best running back not who did the most and had the best stats. Both Taylor who had a great Canadian football career and Pegram who was after Abner Haynes run in the pros had the best NFL career. Mike Jones, Bernard Jackson and Malcolm Jackson led Fry's offenses. It is interesting that all these backs except Dunbar and Pegram played on good teams. Leaving Dunbar out because he isn't finished and those I have not seen play college ball like. Haynes; I would rate the backs on an ability basis: 1. Thomas ( his freshman year) 2. Patrick Cobbs 3. Eric Pegram 4. Leo Taylor 5. Bernard Jackson (his junior year), 6. Mike Jones 7. Galbreath, 8. Malcom Jones. As most know, Jamario was never the same after his freshman year. Bernard who was great under Fry, was relegated to the bench by Jerry Moore (He was murdered during his senior football year but he was not a starter).

Checking out their 2-deep in this Fall's Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, it appears UH will graduate their starting QB this year and will have to replace some other key positions. Of course, they may be ready to simply reload with as much quality. I believe we will have 1 of 2 QB's (whoever it is) with a good year under his belt after this football season. We have somewhat of a perfect storm on the verge of happening in Denton with Mean Green football. Perfect Storm? If Coach Dodge does well this year (as most of us I believe hope he does) we could very well go to a bowl game with 6 or 7 wins and then we'd be hosting the University of Houston Cougars as a bowl quality team. If TD doesn't do well or get his needed wins this Fall, then we open the 2011 football campaign with a new stadium and a new head football coach. (Perfect storm was probably not the best illustration I could come up with but I know many of you get my drift). IMHO, UH will travel more fans to this particular one game because how many schools get to open another school's new football stadium in any given century? I like where our team could be next Fall whoever coaches them and I think UH will lose some talent this Fall which could make it an interesting game for next Fall. Great choice of a stadium opening opponent in my opinion and being originally from the Houston area and an ex Coog' fan as a kid up untill my senior year in HS, I couldn't be happier with UNT's new stadium debut matchup. I would hope UH would bring their fabulous marching band for this trip. Whats green with lots of red goo? Give up? Answer: A frog in a microwave after a full 2 minutes of it doing a Joe Cocker/Woodstock-style spastic sort of dance, that's what! (SUMG, you can have that old one for free--I for darn sure don't want it anymore)! LOL!

Joe, what do you sound like when you are confident and not scared? I think if SMU or TCU won't come, then I think Houston is a good choice. I think you should open with as biggest name as you possibly can. USF hosted Texas in their new stadium. Though Texas won, Mack Brown said after the game that they would be careful not to help another school open their stadium. USF played lights out because of the excitement, and I believe we will to. If Dodge is the coach, then we will be coming off a good season this year, and will want to prove this year was no fluke. IF he is not, then the new coach and the team will want to usher in the start of a brand new winning era in the new stadium at UNT. We have quite a few graduates living in the Houston area, and I am sure Houston has its share in DFW. A couple of years ago, UH dang near filled up the lower bowl at the pit when we played them the day of their bowl game in Fort Worth. There was a lot of red! I think it is a great choice and I believe many would snicker if we scheduled a soft opponent.

I think it's great to have Indiana and Houston in home and gome series, but opening the new stadium with Houston is a terrible idea. I drink alot of green cool-aid, but the chances of us winning against a team that looks to be the next TCU, Boise, BYU, or Utah of college football, just don't seem good to me. I want to open the stadium with a win. Get the stadium built on time, and if we have to, schedule WKU for Sept. 3. I would think the Waters would rather us open this thing with a win. If the Houston game ends up being the opener, and they kick the crap out of us on ESPN (2, U, Classic, or the Ocho), many of you who are happy now will be calling for someones head.

I just don't think the trigger will be pulled ,if when you throw Clemson and KState out the mix, and we have 5 or 6 solid wins AND we"re in the game until the end with Troy and Middle TN. Sorry, there might be clamoring for his head here, but the people who ultimately make the decision won't make the change, IMHO.

Dozer, the reference was in regard to me purchasing the thousand dollar packages in the opening thread in which the responses were that I was not supporting the program. Look, I agree that we need donations and donations of all amounts, but to simply say (not you) that because someone doesn't want to give thousands of dollars to the program they are not supporting it, just isn't fair. I support the program and go to just about every event, I have relatives that were a part of UNT athletics and we belong to the Letterman's club. All that to say that yes I am not going to dish out thousands on a premium package until we play better opponents. This is a fair statement. I am not saying that I/we are not going to be a part of UNT until this happens but you cannot deny that if all of a sudden we joined the CUSA next season that premium seat sales would go up. Were these people not supporting the program previously? To all: Please don't automatically jump to the conclusions that people are not giving to the program. It is possible to still support the program even though you are not exactly satisfied with where it currently is.

Good article and I hope this is the year he realizes the success from his hard work. has he been perfect? No, but who is? He is a good man that represents our university very well and is a good man. I hope he is the coach here for a long time.

I don't understand how anyone can defend DD or how he can defend himself and claim to be a supporter of the program. It's got nothing to do with how much you give. Some are defending DD for his inabilty to shell out all this money for premium seats but DD didn't say he couldn't afford the club seats. As a matter of fact, he will pay for club seats......"when UNT gets in a better conference." He makes a choice to NOT support the program because he doesn't like who UNT plays in conference. That is crazy to hear someone claim to support the program but only if they play better opponents. And then Eppy4life gets on here and says he's not the reason the program is where it is? I'll guarantee you DD is not the only person that feels that way. His attitude is the EXACT definition of not supporting the program. He has the money to give, he's just going to hold it until some other team besides UNT makes it worth his while. Get behind UNT. Regardless of who they're playing.

Maybe while we're doing construction....we can borrow a crane to remove those giant chips on your shoulders. Just because some of us are encouraging fans to give....does not mean we're ridiculing those who don't. We all know that in any life, most of us go through various economic class levels. Speaking as someone who is buying club seats.....I couldn't have bought those most years of my adult life. Now I can. For now, anyway. Who knows in five years....I may be sitting in the V section. You as a fan, should be thrilled that folks are buying club seats. Hey I'm thrilled that the really big money people are buying suites. Hallelujah! The program does need money you know. So whatever you or anyone else does....if that's all you can...that's all we expect.

What? Are you serious? The attitude of guys like Dumpsalot isn't what's 'holding this program back.' Just because some alumni choose to spend their money elsewhere isn't the reason this program is where it is. Too many on this board feel that if you're not buying club level seating, joining the mean green club, or playing in the gmg bowl, you're the problem. If I choose to support the program by paying to get into the tailgating area and throwing tortillas in the parking lot the entire game, so be it.

I live in Houston, TX., so I was sitting in the Rice Press Box where all of their big money Alumni watch the game. A friend of mine's Grandfather was the Rice team doctor back in the day. I had bird's eye view of 77 Rice 20 UNT butt kicking, and it was a KICKING. Rice could have scored 100+ if they wanted, but had compassion for UNT and it's HS coach. Yes HS coach. Your knock on G. Vizza is he left UNT because the coach's son..."all world QB recruit" was coming to UNT and R. Dodge knew Daddy's system like the back of his hand. If you're getting the crap sacked out of you and Daddy's son is the new team's savior what would y'all do? Ride the bench like Mangrum (sp) did? I wouldn't...maybe I'm not as selfless as I should be. Was Gino V. the only one leaving UNT football. I wonder how much the UNT football team was being run like a college team, or was our program being run like a glorified HS team in the locker room? On the field we've pretty much looked like a HS team. If you disagree please post our current record under T. Dodge. I'm not a T. Dodge homer...thought D. Dickey was better coach...on a coaching scale where does that leave T. Dodge? UNT football savior? Disagree, please re-sight our record under Mr. Todd Dodge please?

When you drive north on 35 through Lake Dallas, there are a couple of those digital billboards at the Swisher Rd. exit. Anyway, I noticed today that UNT had an ad up for football. Now these ads change out every twenty seconds or so, so we are not continuously seen. But they are using the artists drawings of the new stadium along with a reference to UNT football. I think it is great that something is up and in a great location. There are many people who live in Oakmont, Corinth, Shady Shores, Lake Dallas, and it is great that we are advertising there. Hopefully they will think that, with the new stadium, they might start attending some games.

If you were a "real" UNT fan you'd shell out the $1200. Until then you don't matter.

You have no right to bash Dodge personally, maybe he hasn't been successful on the field but the man is a class act and doesn't play favorites...I'm sorry, owusu-hemeng was a good player, but he decided not to come back, it wasn't dodge's decision, or rv's or anyone other then sam's so i think you need to learn what your talking about before you come on here talking all that nonsense...

I think the ads are doing good and I think any opportunity to sell this year's tickets is good too. I see the two as separate. I don't think we are going to attract many people to Fouts unless we are winning. It probably isn't worth the marketing cost. However, to come see a new stadium is pretty neat and it gets your name out there. I think UNT is going about it right.

Especially after the RV podcast, is anyone else concerned that we are overmarketing the new stadium with this year's ticket ads? Seems like the focus should be on this year's product. I get the Fouts Finale focus, but for now I'd like to see the ticket sales ads separated from drumming up support for the new stadium. Fire at will.

I hadn't seen the information that our first game in the new stadium is going to be on national TV. Anyway, if you're frightened of us playing Houston....stay home. You can cower under your sheets all day.....and maybe Mommy will bring you a bowl of soup. Sheesh.

To you girls that are afraid of playing Houston in the opener of our NEW STADIUM: This is about opening that new football stadium for UNT, not the opponent. Come to celebrate the facility, the stadium, the bright future ahead. Do you realize how close we were to not having this stadium, and perhaps not having a top level program too? I remember waiting on here that October 2008 afternoon for news of the student vote on the athletic fee. Someone posted that it wasn't looking good. I was beyond depressed, thinking of "the future that could have been for our program". Bring on Houston or Notre Dame or the Cowboys as an opponent; the team and fans will be pumped and ready that night for anyone!

I want to play Houston. I'm not saying that we shouldn't. I wish we played Houston every year. I'm from Houston. I'll make that trip every time. I'm saying we shouldn't make that game the first one in our new stadium. I'm not scared to play Houston. I'm being realistic. We've won five games in three years. A new stadium isn't going to change that over night. If we have another bad season, Houston is going to embarrass us. I don't want my first memories of a game in the new stadium to be a disaster like the Tulsa or the last Rice game. Based on our recent performance, the most likely opportunity opening against Houston presents is receiving a beat down as we open the new stadium on national T.V. No thanks. We play WKU at home in 2011. Finish the stadium on time and move the WKU game to Sept. 3. If we don't, odds are we will regret it.

Thank God our team won't go into that game under the assumption they are going to get "smoked." UH will be breaking in a new QB. If they do well again this year, they may be looking for a new head coach, too. This is a good opportunity. We'll get press in Houston and in Dallas on our stadium and our facilities as well as our on-field performance. In one of those areas, we'll hit a home-run. The other remains to be seen but I'd be hesitant to raise the white flag this early in the game.

Can we try not to crap our pants whenever we have an opportunity to register a meaningful win? Houston will be breaking in a new QB and, possibly, a new head coach if Sumlin duplicates last year's success. Sound familiar?? If, as an institution, you are going to worry about playing a home game against a non-BCS opponent, just do yourself a favor and voluntarily drop to FCS.

That is the worst loser negative post yet! Maybe you should tell Tulsa and Akron that they play way too well for the shape that their facilities are in. Because guess what our facilities are better.

Don't we go into every season praising our recievers or talking about how great that group is going to be? Then about mid-season we realize that they can't seperate from the defense so screens and crossing patterns is all we can complete.

Absolutely stupid post. Obviously did not read or cannot comprehend what the vast majority of people urging fans to give WHAT THEY CAN (and only what they can) are trying to say. Maybe the arrow hit a bit close to home for you...I have no clue, but I would ask that you actually read posts in the future and do not attribute to the "masses" what you read from one posting.

I think the point is if you don't want to buy them, fine, bit don't come on the fan website bashing the pricing, schedule, etc as a reason not to make the purchase. Just don't buy them. Sometimes we all forget this is a public site.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not impressed with the home opener of UH. If we are going to get smoked by a team at least make it a name team. Not another non BCS level school, but at least we don't have to worry about their fans buying out the stadium.

Maybe it's that 54 - 2 game vs Tulsa or maybe that 77 - 20 drumming vs Rice that is still in some heads. Do I worry , yes. Should I , no. We should raise our expectations , but just because we build a new stadium doesn't mean we will all of sudden get better on the field. See SMU
