  1. Defense was ok. Not great, but not bad. Showed flashes of stopping the run. Secondary was aggressive in the run game. D-Line and linebackers need to get more involved. More pass rush also. But didn't give up any big plays. Offense 1st team looked good. Scored almost every possession. Running backs a little banged up so didn't see them all. Stone was with 1st team QB. Looked accurate. Ran the offense well. Good timing with receivers. Cash was 2nd team QB. Looked solid. Good arm, but a little late on a couple of throws. Ran the ball well when he had to scramble. Reese was 3rd QB. Didn't do much. Missed some receivers and completed a couple of short passes. Overall a good scrimmage. Looked better than this time last year. O-Line will be solid. Kicker made a 51 yarder during live scrimmage. So that's good. Saw Chandler Morris there watching. Not very big. Smaller than Stone. Will be interesting to see how things play out this summer.

  2. This is an interesting pickup for us. This guy doesn’t conform to the typical transfer profile that we should be focusing on: highly productive player at a low-major/D2 or a formerly productive player at high-major/mid-major who needs a change of scenery. Brock Vice has played ZERO real college basketball. But finding a player who can be productive for us at the center position is going to take some creativity. Need to replace Tylor Perry or Jason Edwards? Not fun, but there are LOTS of fast young men 5’9 or taller who can dribble and shoot that the marketplace has undervalued. Ross Hodge can take his pick. There just aren’t very many 18-24 year-old humans who are 6’9 or taller. And the marketplace places a very high price on those who are that tall AND possess any degree of athleticism or basketball skill. Which brings us back to Brock Vice, who redshirted on a VERY good Creighton team that finished 25-10 last season (second-place in the Big East). The starting center on that team was Ryan Kalkbrenner, a 7’1 monster who averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots a game. His backup also put up good numbers in very limited minutes. So Vice hasn’t been a productive college player yet, but atleast he has a good excuse. With both players in front of him on the depth chart eligible to come back to Creighton next season, Vice needs a change of scenery to get his oversized sneakers on the court. He’s 6-10. Can rebound AND shoot. Was an outstanding high school and AAU basketball player. And has enough meat on his bones and athleticism to have been a standout high school football player. This is exactly the kind of kid that Ross should be landing. We did not have a player like this guy on our team last season and it hurt us all year. Welcome to Denton!

  4. Layne's grandmother is bravely battling cancer and his decision was based on staying closer to her and the rest of the family as they support her during this difficult time. UNT did the right thing for this young man by letting him out of his signed NLI.

  9. I wish people on this board would stop being so condescending towards Stone. He wears the colors of UNT, thus he does not deserve to be bashed on this board daily. Please, have some respect for our all of our players.

  13. Bye And people wonder why interest is lagging and people don't want to go. Donate to the scholarship fund, donate to the facility's fund, donate to this collective or that for what? A kid that is just using us to move along? Getting more difficult to donate, to spend money on season tickets and to carve out time to travel to and from Denton for the games. This doesn't help. Love, A Scott. One of my all-time favorites because of the little things he does, but I honestly don't know where he thinks he will go to get more playing time.

  14. Good luck to Rubin @ Michigan. Thanks for the memories. Just curious why he just didn't walk on at Michigan from Yates HS if he loved the history and family feel so much. Had a very good career at Yates but Michigan wasn't around when only UTEP, UNT and Nichols State came calling.

  15. Sounds like he was a pretty good prospect coming out of high school. "Brock Vice is a Creighton Bluejay. The 6-foot-10 power forward Brock Vice (Germantown, Tenn. / Houston HS) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Creighton and play for the Bluejays. He's ranked as the nation's No. 33 best center prospect by 247Sports and the No. 3 overall player in the state of Tennessee" Brock Vice is a Creighton Bluejay (247sports.com)

  16. My objection is with a Mean Green player leaving to represent another college. If they want to leave early for the NBA or overseas, then I don’t hold that against them. But if they are suiting up for another school then I hope they miss every shot they take and lose every rebound. *Unless they weren’t getting an opportunity to play here. Then I wish them well.

  24. https://writeforcalifornia.com/p/cal-spring-practice-offensive-questions-2024 Update on Cal QB battle. Call it off topic, I don't give a shit. This guy left us and a sure QB1 position to fight for the starting job at a barely P5 school. I hope he rides that GD bench all year and doesn't see a dime from the money they said he was getting.

  31. Stone 17 of 22 for a little over 200 yards and 1 Td pass. Cash 150 yards and 2 TD passes. 1 int. Vito did not list Reese stats, but only completed 3 or 4 passes and also had 1 int. Cash and Reese switched out at QB for the green team. Stone was only QB for the white team. Stone led 1 TD drive and 2 field goal drives. Cash led 2 TD drives and 1 field goal drive. Reese no scoring drives. (From Brett Vito) o line looked solid. It was a hodgepodge at running back because most of them are injured. Receivers did a good job of catching the balls. Defense played fast and aggressive. Should be much improved.

  32. Defense was flying all over the place. No missed tackles. Not sure how that really equates. Offense showed signs. frosh QB threw 2 pick 6’s in the first half, and came back with 2 good TD drives in the 2nd half. Looked pretty good. Throws a good ball. The picks were on out patterns, and were both good plays by the secondary. Receivers won most of the jump balls which is good/bad depending on which side of the ball you are on….but they were covered well I liked the format Really only 2 Qb’s played I didn’t see any injuries I give it a solid B

  33. Also, this won't be the typical 1st team offense vs 2nd team defense scrimmage and vice versa they've done in past Spring games. They named captains for the Spring game and the captains held a draft to pick teams. Coaches are also split between the 2 teams and it will be played like an actual game.

  36. I know that my interest in College Football has degraded massively over the last few years. It started with the Transfer Portal and got worse with the NIL. I no longer watch or attend any games outside of NT. It's just not as fun anymore to me.

  37. That was 7 away games and Kansas was at Texas Stadium. UAB was 1AA in 1995 and had been Division 3 until 1992. That homecoming loss was one of the most disappointing losses in my almost 50 years as a fan. Dan McCarney proved that it can get worse. No thank you. One good thing about that season was all games were telecast with Gil Brandt as one of the announcers. The come from behind victory over Oregon State is certainly a top highlight of my memories as a fan.

  40. Just a quick note on tbt. We are in!!! We will be playing our regional this year in the Fertitta Center in Houston. No word yet as to seeding but the first game will be around July 19th. We are in search of a uniform sponsor so if anyone is interested please PM me and I will give you the details. Team is pretty much intact from last year so far and obviously we are looking to add a couple of players. thank you to everyone is helping with this. We have high expectations this year. Also, we will be changing the name slightly due to some copyright problems with an eagles fan who owns the mark "bleed green"

  42. I'll play or at least try to explain the reaction we observe. Can't speak for everyone, but I think most (maybe all) would be absolutely fine with the scenario you lay out above. I think your real question is why do people react negatively when our players (especially starters/stars) hit the portal, but welcome with open arms players that transfer in. The latter doesn't need a lot of explanation. I'll try to dissect the former. I think the initial visceral reaction when "our players" choose to leave is deeply-rooted in the fragile psyche of the Mean Green fan base. Those here are passionate about the University of North Texas, want good things for the school, want the athletic teams to be successful and desperately want the recognition that comes with winning and championships. In the case of athletic success much of that is dependent on the athletes. They become the vehicle for that recognition. When athletes choose to come to UNT over other schools it serves as a type of consensual validation of the choice each of us made to attend here. When those same player spend 3 or 4 years developing their skills, becoming starters or stars on the team, they are seen, rightly or wrongly, as a catalyst that will surely get us over that hump and the recognition we are all starved for. Plus we get to know them well...they are one of us. Then on the cusp of everything good that will come next season, they choose to leave. It's like they are saying they have outgrown us and they cannot get where they want to be if they stay associated with UNT. For those that are so passionate about North Texas, that's hard to hear and it hurts. On top of that, throw in the realization that any success that athlete may have in his or her one year at XYZ U will accrue to XYZ U and not North Texas. That's like rubbing salt in the wound. Eventually, I think everyone gets over it, but for the long-suffering fan base it's just another hit. It's a rather ordinary and understandable emotional reaction when you think about it.

  43. I don't know why we keep ripping guys that contributed from day 1. There's a very good chance that this team would not have achieved what it did without Jason Edwards. If he was the complete package when he came here he wouldn't have came here. Again, this fanbase/board needs to come to grips with the age of NIL and the transfer portal. We love our guys until they leave.

  44. The best thing about having Hodge as a coach was he came from JUCO where they often have massive turnover year to year, which has now become the norm in DI too. I'm sure he was at least partially ready for this scenario.
