  1. Good player and contributed a lot to this team. I wish him well!

  3. I don't know why we keep ripping guys that contributed from day 1. There's a very good chance that this team would not have achieved what it did without Jason Edwards. If he was the complete package when he came here he wouldn't have came here. Again, this fanbase/board needs to come to grips with the age of NIL and the transfer portal. We love our guys until they leave.

  4. That works. Toss out their free education, books, meals, dorm and medical and let them pay for it with their NIL, like real employees have to.

  5. Uninspiring hire for an uninspiring school. Perfect fit.

  6. I believe Colleges will soon have to go to playing-contracts with athletes before much longer, similar to the NFL. Mainly to lock up players from moving after each season. The pay will have to be school-issued (but can be donor funded) with cap limits set on rosters determined by conference membership. Players can still sign endorsement deals outside the school playing contracts. But they can't leave for another school until either released from their current school contract, or stipulated buyout paid, or settlement agreement. Similar to NFL. A buyout from another school would help the athlete to move up in conferences and help the losing school recruit his replacement.

  8. Without Edwards this year, I speculate NT would have lost about 5 more games. Now we lose the only first team All Conference player and many chime in that he was not that good anyway and we can do better. All those, that think he will be easy to replace and was really a liability; are simply basketball unaware. What many seem to forget is that opponents' defenses were for most part focused on stopping Edwards. This freed up the other players for more good shots. Many predicted this, he is a hired gun and that is the why he is at NT. I think NT will get a good replacement, but I want to thank Edwards for his year of play and wish him the best.

  9. Good kid and a scorer, but a defensive liability and cannot play the point. He couldn’t win games like Tylor could and he is small. I do appreciate what he did here and wish him well.

  10. The best thing about having Hodge as a coach was he came from JUCO where they often have massive turnover year to year, which has now become the norm in DI too. I'm sure he was at least partially ready for this scenario.

  11. The new school, such as TT, would buy coach Mac out of his contract as will all universities of note. UNT paid North Carolina of Somewhere $100,000 to buy their women's basketball coach Karen Ashton out and she lasted one year before bolting to Texas. I feel safe in saying Texas bought her contract out and we got our money back and maybe even a little more. She eventually was fired because she could never compete with Baylor and is now at UTSA. If you want to put players under contract you would need to treat them as employees with the same benefits you provide all other employees. In summary, we are in violent agreement that the system is broken until it isn't and Chandler Rogers lands in our lap. I think in the near future the Power conferences such as Big 10 and SEC will spin off and do their own thing leaving the Group of whatever number to put their own division together leaving 1AA programs alone. In the meantime we are stuck in NIL/Transfer Portal Hell.

  12. Coaches are under contracts, many with buyout stipulations if they want to leave before the end of it. They can't just walk away like a player can now. Scholarships used to have sit-out rules if you transferred. Put players under contracts too, with buyouts for the new school to pay.

  13. Looking at comments on X, he won at least 21 games 7 times, NCAA tournament 6 times, 2 Sweet 16's and an Elite 8. Supposedly given big resources for bigtime staff and NIL.

  14. He only stayed because they didn't actually offer him the job!

  15. I know you love The Office Andrew. Just think of players as Dwight Schrute and you'll be happy. Would I ever leave this company? Look, I'm all about loyalty. In fact, I feel like part of what I'm being paid for here is my loyalty. But if there were somewhere else that valued loyalty more highly, I'm going wherever they value loyalty the most.

  18. I wish he stuck around, but I can’t blame him if he’s being offered big time money. He was nice to my son after the Tulane game, so for that I’m grateful. I don’t feel like the team ever really played to their potential...not his fault. Injuries forced him into the starting lineup…he would have been better served as a 6th man this season. I think Hodge will find another player that will contribute…if he has not already found him. GMG!

  19. Maybe this means Ruben is coming back. I never felt like they were ever comfortable playing together. Hate to lose his scoring but he also had to have a lot of shots to get those points. Not very efficient. He also struggled in late game situations. Good luck to him and I trust Hodge to get a quality replacement!

  20. Now that we know we have at least 2 open slots, please list realistic UNT portal possibilities. Recent history has shown that the team will go Juco in its search. However, some notable local names to ponder: Cameron Barnes - Slim 6-10 kid just entered the portal from Ole Miss. Still raw but started at center for powerhouse Duncanville the last 3 years. Should be a redshirt freshman Drew Steffe - Never played his freshman season at Tech. Family issues caused him to withdraw from the program. Big time 6-5 recruit out of Frisco Memorial. Great shooter. Davion Sykes - Texas State transfer and another former Duncanville Panther. Good wing prospect that may have undersigned Eddie Lampkin Jr - Colorado & TCU transfer. 6-11, 265 from Morton Ranch HS in Houston. Would move right into the starting center position. Ashton Smith - 6-9, 270 from Oral Roberts. Played with Aaron Smith in HS. Not great but a big body Duncan Powell - Sacramento State & NC State transfer from DeSoto, TX. Played one year with Chris Morgan. Micah Peevy - TCU & Texas Tech - Excellent player out of Duncanville HS where he played for father David. Will more than likely stay P5 or enter the draft Jakobe Coles - TCU & Oklahoma - 6-7 C/F that played on a very good Denton Guyer team Alex Anamekwe - UT transfer. Very good HS player out of McKinney HS. 6-5 Lee Dort - Vanderbilt transfer. 6-10, 245. May have little interest since he was arrested for aggravated assault of his ex girlfriend. From McKinney, TX Abou Ousmane - 6-10 big transfer from Xavier. Former Mean Green starting center

  21. What we have right now is a game without rules. Games without rules are not fun. All of this player movement is bad for the game. College sports need fans. It is hard for fans to get emotionally invested in these teams when your favorite player ditches your favorite team to go play for someone else over and over again. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out: whether the NCAA can get an anti-trust exemption and put things back similar to how they were before or if the student-athletes get made employees who bargain collectively. And how is all of this going to impact the non-revenue sports? What a mess.

  22. It's amusing that these smu trolls are as thrilled as they are over this hire. He was at USC for ELEVEN years. FGCU was a long time ago. He recruits at a high enough level that they may be able to get out of the cellar of the ACC, but he looks a lot like a Will Wade type guy to me. Expect trouble and underachievement when up against the really big boys. Good luck....NOT.

  23. I definitely appreciated his talent and seeming ability to help keep us from the 5-7 minute scoring droughts we used to see from our teams. I attribute a lot of that to improvement to him. But, as others have said, either we were going to have to change our style or he was going to have to take a different role. I'd prefer to not have lost him, but he's one where it was a bit of a square peg round hole and I wish him well in his next spot. I would add, I assume that his minutes in the NIT reveal that our coaching staff would not have wanted to lose him, either.

  25. Whatever we do, we have to recruit the SF/PF role with tenacity. Not sure how the roster will shape up, but landing the most athletic, springy and long 6'5"-6'8" guys as possible is never a bad idea. These are the dirty work players, the better defenders, the residual rebounders, etc. They are the foundation players. Then piece around that foundation with very good bigs* and pg's. *if you can't snag a very quality big, go get another 6-7"-6'8" guy. Don't go get 6'11" just to have 6'11" on the bench.

  26. I think without Rubin for a lot of the season, he sorta 'seized' that opening. Nothing wrong with that really, as we needed someone to step up. Who's to say he couldn't do the same as Tylor & Javion, and improve from year 1 to year 2?

  27. Agree We have fans on here thinking we can just reload with another recruit, but until we have some serious NIL a money. We are just another farm team to feed the corporations.

  31. Color me underwhelmed in the hire. 15-18 for the 2023-24 season, 105-100 PAC-12 record, and has never won any kind of championship in 11 years in the PAC-12? Sounds more like you did USC a favor.

  35. It is pretty concerning to me that the other top programs in the AAC: Memphis, FAU, UAB have demonstrated an ability to retain their elite players. Meanwhile we have lost our leading scorer to the portal two years in a row.

  36. I do hope you’ll throw money at him. See a kid who is a great scorer…fail to see that he isn’t clutch…try to buy your way to success…continue to be an after thought. That would be the most SMU thing ever.

  37. So tell me this, a guy jumps from Juco to AAC, plays majority of games without two starters. Had to take on the point guard role and it wasn't good enough?

  38. Pointing out his liabilities is not really warranted, as we'd all be thrilled if he returned. It's not really fair to compare him to Perry either. They had different strengths, and Perry was here for 2 years & improved from year 1 to year 2.

  39. This one hurts. He is definitely talented. However, his ball handling skills need a lot of work. Often resulted in turnovers or bad possessions.

  41. That was 7 away games and Kansas was at Texas Stadium. UAB was 1AA in 1995 and had been Division 3 until 1992. That homecoming loss was one of the most disappointing losses in my almost 50 years as a fan. Dan McCarney proved that it can get worse. No thank you. One good thing about that season was all games were telecast with Gil Brandt as one of the announcers. The come from behind victory over Oregon State is certainly a top highlight of my memories as a fan.

  42. I'm thinking perhaps he means Perry and now Edwards. Our leading scorers getting poached by bigger programs every year. This is happening in football and even softball as our best pitcher got bought by OU. This is where binding player contracts will have to be mandated, like for coaches, with salaries and buyouts if they want to leave the contract early.

  43. Stating facts about his game is “ripping” him? And with NIL - I’m comfortable with it. So are most of the rational posters here. If these dudes are “paid” athletes now, they can handle criticism - especially from fans that fund the program (season ticket holders, MGSF, & NIL collective donors). This isn’t college athletics of old. It’s not as fun. And if they don’t stay and get degrees, you’re not really one of us. You’re someone who played here for a year or two then changed teams like a pro athlete does.

  44. eh. to a reduced role, for sure. to come back as the clear number 1 and "leader"...that's the recipe for another middle of the pack season, IMO. we're in an era where scholarship availability is basically as valuable as scholarship players. this is a great opportunity. plus, we probably ditch that weird kid poster from Virginia too.

  46. Great information thank you for sharing. The results of the transfers up to this point shine a focus on to where Morris's commitment is. I have not been the biggest fan of Caponi, but if your boss is not going to give you the tools to do your job correctly it makes it an uphill battle. If having the worst defense in football didn't shake up Morris and have him focus on adding players then I don't know what will.
