Competing in their first season of Missouri Valley Conference football, the North Texas Eagles finished second to the University of Houston and led in six of nine divisions in the season's statistics. Holding a 5-5 season record, the Eagles posted two wins and two losses in conference play. The Flock downed Tulsa and San Jose while dropping decisions to Oklahoma State and Drake in MVC competition this fall.

Leading scorer in the conference was David Lott, Eagle halfback, who hit paydirt seven times to score forty-two points.

An exploding one-two punch for the Eagles was in the form of quarterback Ray Toole and half-back Abner Haynes. Toole led the race in total offense and passing. His passing arm accounted for 367 yards and six touchdowns. Combined with 316 yards rushing, Toole totaled 683 yards total offense. He also led the nation as well as the MVC in pass interception, snatching seven passes and totaling 133 yards runback.

Displaying a bewildering change-of-pace, Haynes raced 639 yards on 122 carries, an average of 5.7 yards per carry, to take the conference rushing honors. This performance landed him second place in total offense. Also leading in punt returns with four for 157 yards, Haynes boosted the North Texas punt return average to 17.5 yards, the best in the nation. His return average doubled any other in the top twenty punt returners in the nation.
