I have a hard time believing that is outdoors in Denton on January 17, 1917. Players in shorts and sleeveless shirts in January?

Plus there is this from weather history for the Dallas area:

January 14-15, 1917 One of the big north Texas snow events. Between 4-8 inches were widespread over the area north of a line through San Saba, Waxahachie, and Atlanta. The largest totals were eight inches at Weatherford and Fort Worth.

Even if the snow melted by the 17th, that court would be mush and still too wet to play on.
