Just one day after he was cleared to return to full practices, David Ash was named the starting quarterback of the Texas Longhorns by first-year head coach Charlie Strong on Tuesday at Big 12 Media Days, reports Taylor Gaspar of Rivals.

Ash was the starting quarterback going into last season, but his campaign was cut short by a concussion. He played in only three games, throwing for 760 yards and seven touchdowns with two interceptions. After the season was complete, Ash was granted a medical redshirt.

I think you are thinking of Hilbert Jackson.

(Germans bombing Pearl Harbor moment)

Dammit... you are right. that is humiliating.

In my defense, it felt like a laramie Lee hit, he has put so many good licks on people. And the main point still stands: there are a few UNT players very capable of taking out Ash if his protection is not A+

Considering we fudged the system to get Dajon a redshirt after he played in the first game I don't think we are in any place to talk

A few plays verses entire games. Not exactly the same.

Part of me says to just let the kids play and be liberal about granting red shirts. The other side of me looks at someone like Jason White or Brandon Weeden and wonders if it's right to have guys in their upper 20's competing against guys who are maybe 20.

Ash got hurt in their second game, and briefly appeared in the 3rd (left in the first quarter). His injury was also a concussion so the NCAA should be happy that Texas played it safe by keeping him out as long as he was still experiencing symptoms.

Weeden was that old because he played baseball, not because of a medical redshirt

Garrett Gilbert played in 2 games in '11 and then got a mysterious shoulder injury allowing him to get a med rs and go to SMU. I can't complain though, we did Riley the same way as Dajon. I'm still upset we didn't get Muzzy an extra year though but maybe Dodge just didn't push hard enought, who knows.

Anyone have a single doubt that if Mini Mac had played three games his medical redshirt would have been denied?

There's no fudging the system in any of these cases. Dajon was not eligible for a redshirt since he played, but since he suffered a season-ending injury after playing less than 30% of games, he was automatically eligible for a hardship waiver, which is sometimes called a "medical redshirt." Same with Ash. The only fudging the system would be if they actually did not suffer season-ending injuries, certainly possible with Dajon.

So you would have said no to Sarge McCoy playing last year?

I brought up Weeden not because of the red shirt but instead for the general idea of some athletes being so much older than the vast majority of the other players.

Josh White and his seven years is an example for the redshirt issue.
