Interesting rule change this season

This rule could get so cloudy. What if he rolls out in the passing situation? What if you shoe-string tackle as he runs away? What if you hit high and fall down because it's really hard to tackle a JaMarcus Russle/Roethlisberger?

Alluding a defender as you describe makes the QB a running back essentially and so the rule would not apply. It's when the QB is standing in the pocket and the defender intentionally goes for the knees (or below) is when it is a foul, if I understand the rule correctly.

What if the DL player is being blocked into a position where hitting the knee is the only option? Is it still allowable? If so, fine, but it's going to take a very good eye from the ref to catch this in many occasions. Is it reviewable? It needs to be to see if the defensive player was forced into the hit.

So many questions.

Since this is a rule from the NFL that the NCAA is adopting, I am assuming its enforcement will be similar. If that is the case here are some answers:

1. I believe that if a defender is blocked into the QB, it would not be a penalty similar to catch interference on a punt, but good luck seeing it.

2. No penalty is reviewable, including this one.

I get that they are attempting to protect the QB from low hits while their leg is planted and more likely to be injured, but this rule is very difficult to enforce correctly.

Maybe this clears up your question?

Exceptions for these types of hits occur when:

1. the passer becomes a runner, either inside or outside the tackle box;
2. the defender grabs or wraps the passer in an attempt to make a conventional tackle;
3. the defender is not rushing unabated or is blocked or fouled into the passer.

If the defender is being blocked he is not unabated.

It needs to be reviewable. No way for a ref to see everything going onion the interior line on every play.

Opens up a can of worms. If this is reviewable, then why not pass interference or holding? If you start making everything reviewable, games will get really long. Some things just need to be what they are.

Maybe we should just eliminate human referees altogether and instead adopt a continuous booth review. Teams would be required to provide 3 human cameramen(persons) and 4 automated drones with cameras to provide field level views of all plays. The replay booth will consist of 8 reviewers with large HD monitors and a direct connection to the scoreboard. The single "gameplay supervisor" human will be there to reset the ball on downs and generally coordinate gameplay but not call fouls.

Any infraction will be required to be documented via a live video capture playback on the jumbotron. Teams can have 2 challenges that will then automatically send a recorded feed of the infraction and all angles to the NPCC (National Professional Collegiate Corporation) and salaried professional review will provide a review within a mandatory 5 minute time frame. :beerhat:
