IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - While most of the attention is on rookie draft picks each year, sometimes it’s the undrafted free agents that really make a rookie class.

Among the current Cowboys starters who went undrafted are quarterback Tony Romo (2003), wide receiver Miles Austin (2006), and center Phil Costa (2010).

So, who are the rookies we need to keep an eye on at this week’s Cowboys Rookie Mini-Camp? Danny Coale, Matt Johnson, Lance Dunbar, Tim Benford, and Donavon Kemp are my picks to click this weekend:

Running Backs

Lance Dunbar – North Texas – (5-8, 205) – Haltom HS grad is the all-time leading rusher in North Texas football history and after flashing 4.47 speed at his Pro Day workout, Cowboys scouts became intrigued…barring an injury to DeMarco Murray, Felix Jones, or Phillip Tanner, he’s probably destined for a practice squad spot at best, but he has a legitimate chance with his hometown team.

Darrell Scott – South Florida – (6-0, 231) – was a much ballyhooed recruit in 2007 who chose Colorado over Texas, then transferred to USF…turned pro after rushing for 814 yards on 153 carries (5.3) and 5 TDs in 2011…ran a 4.59 forty at his Pro Day.

IRVING, Texas -- North Texas running back Lance Dunbar got a welcome to the NFL moment from another rookie in the morning practice at Cowboys rookie minicamp Saturday.

Dunbar was trying to bounce to the outside on a run until outside linebacker Kyle Wilber snatched him and threw him to the ground.

If anything, Wilber has shown he's quick off the ball and powerful. Now, it's against other rookies and second-year players, but still it's impressive to see.

As for Dunbar, he's hitting the holes pretty quickly and learning the NFL way of life.

Dunbar is one of several players with ties to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. There are two players from Dunbar's college, Royce Hill and Jamize Olawale, who are getting a tryout with the Cowboys.

Dunbar has to perform well on special teams if he's going to make the 53-man roster.

"I have to do extra stuff to make this team," Dunbar said. "I'm not going to back down from anything."
