Kehoe fulfills D-I dream at UNT

Although the ceremony was postponed until next week to accommodate several football teammates, Marcus Kehoe couldn't wait another day to make it official — he was a Division I athlete.

Privately signing and faxing a national letter of intent to pole vault at North Texas, the Lampasas senior joined the National Signing Day congregation on Wednesday.

"As a kid, you always have that goal to become a Division I athlete, and growing up I always thought that was going to be in football for me," said Kehoe, who rushed for 1,141 yards and 16 touchdowns this past season. "But I still ended up getting the chance to compete at the Division I level, and that's what it came to. That's the kind of competition I want to be apart of."

Kehoe finished with the fourth-best height (15-feet) at the 3A state track and field meet last May, a mere six inches from reaching the medal stand.

Ultimately choosing the Mean Green over UT-San Antonio, Kehoe said he was most impressed by the caliber of coaching at UNT.

"Derek Mackel jumped 13-feet in high school and went to college and jumped 18-1 — he's somebody that's got a tenacious mentality and wants to be the best," Kehoe said. "That's definitely something I want to associate with."

Is the kid going to play football or just pole vault? Either way, welcome to the Mean Green!

Disclaimer: I do not know the girl in my profile picture. She magically appeared as my avatar on Friday, December 10th, 2010. She is the Angel of Mean Green Christmas. She is the third of three great things for UNT football: McCarney hired, Canales retained, and the Angel of Mean Green Christmas.

He's got a track scholly but I was thinking they might let him try out for football as well.

Love his comment on why he chose North Texas.
"I would drink beer and watch 22 dogs play in a dog park if there was a football involved. I hate this time of year. " bigrobdsp 6/24/2004

It seems to me that I was informed that if a athlete on a non-football scholly joined the football team the ship had to become a fooball ship or be revoked.
