Who is the greatest basketball player in the history of UNT? Anyone ever make it to the NBA?

I'd have to defer to some our older alumni, but in the 20+ years I've followed NT basketball, I'd say Chris Davis.

Thanks. Do you know if he went pro? NBA or ABA?

Can I get some years played, stats, or records, with these names? I haven't been following UNT Basketball for very long.

He was an all-star in Greece last year IIRC.

Joe Hamilton without a doubt is the best NT player I have seen. Remember he played against the very best back in the Missouri Valley. Joe was a junior college transfer and played only two years, so a case can definitely be made for Kenneth Lyons. Kenneth was the best player for NT all four years he played, but the competition level in the Southland did not compare with the old Mo Valley. Hamilton was listed at 5' 10" was very fast, a great ball handler, and had the best outside shoot I've seen at NT. Irverson was the best athlete, but his play didn't compare to either Lyons or Hamilton. Irverson, a legitimate high school All American, left after his junior year or he would have been on the first Blakeley team.

Hamilton played in the old ABA for a number of years. The only player I can remember that had a NBA career was Leroy Winfield, a teammate of Hamilton. He was a mostly a backup guard in the pros after being a 6'2" forward who jumped center for the Green.

IMO it is impossible to compare players from different eras. Basketball used to be a game of finesse and deception but is moving more and more to a game of brute force where physical toughness is nearly as important as technical skill.

Who is the best player ever? My choice is to compare them to their contemporaries. I have to go with Joe Hamilton. He was outstanding in a tough league and went on to play pro ball in an era where there were fewer pro teams. The ABA was a very good league that later merged with the NBA.

Lee Winfield NBA
Joe Hamilton ABA

A discussion of best North Texas players that haven't been mentioned yet should include Willie Davis, Creston Whitaker, Stan Blackmon, Ken Williams, Fred Mitchell, Carl Jones, Deon Hunter, Ronnie Morgan and Jesse Ratliff.

I can't comment on Ken Lyons and Jon Manning as work and family prevented me from seeing them play very much.

Bobby Iverson may have been the most talented. After a great Soph year, he did not play as well his Junior season and then quit the team to become a preacher.

Shawnson Johnson was a great talent. We all remember the shot blocking and rebounds, but there were many turnovers and fouls that may have been forgotten.

Chris Davis was the most versatile player we ever had. Often you hear announcers say about a player, "he can play the one, two, three and four positions." Chris Davis really did.

In two years my hope is we can add Josh White and Tristan Thompson to this list.

Adam McCoy.

Seriously though, I can only speak for the JJ era, but give me pre-smashed hand Kedrick Davis...nobody in my time watching NT basketball was more clutch. Everybody remembers what Calvin did in his senior year, but coming into the season he was expected to play second fiddle to K.D.

I also always loved the way Rich Young, Michael DeGrate, Lee Green, Ben Bell and Snookie Hines played the game.

I will show my age on this one, but my vote goes to John Savage. John played at a time when Freshmen were not eligible to play in Varsity games so only had three years. He played in 1961-62, 1962-63. and 1963-64. At a time when the Missouri Valley Conference just might have been the best basketball conference in the nation, he was All-MVC for three straight years. He did this while playing on teams that seldom won conference games and often were very far behind from the middle of the second half to the finish. I have not seen some of the recent teams, but John Savage could have played on any team at any time in my book.
