I had the pleasure of visiting with Manvel running back Garrison Johnson, fresh off his visit and verbal commitment to North Texas’s 2019 recruiting class.   
 
Johnson (5-11, 210) is listed as the 44th best running back in the nation per 247 Sports.  A standout player at powerhouse Manvel High School, he was a 1st team 5A-11 all-district selection last season as a junior rushing for 677 yards and 12 touchdowns.  Johnson played alongside 2018 UNT QB signee Kason Martin as well as many other high-profile recruits.
 
Prior to the UNT commitment, he held offers from Virginia, Syracuse, Indiana, SMU, UTSA and South Alabama. UNT coaches coach Marty Biagi (Special Teams) and Tashard Choice (Running Backs) are his primary recruiters.
 
Garrison Johnson Quick Hits
 
Q: What led you to your North Texas commitment?
 
A: "The relationship I have with Coach Choice. We talk on a daily basis. I hit up Coach Littrell a lot too. And it’s not always about football, we talk about life. Also, my Quarterback from this past year at Manvel Kason Martin is there and he has told me how much he likes it."
 
Q: How was your visit to New Denton this last weekend?
 
A: “I loved it. I got to spend time with Kason, some of the running backs and the coaching staff. They went out of their way to make me feel at home and spent a lot of time with me.”
 
Q: Is playing close to home important?
 
A: “Playing close to home and being around family has always been a goal of mine.”
 
Q: Thoughts on New Denton?
 
A: “The past two years Coach Littrell has been there is huge. To come in and take the team to bowl games in back to back years really stood out to me.  I know when I get there it will only continue. Going to bowl games and winning bowl games, even going undefeated. Just like how Scott Frost turned around UCF, I think Coach Littrell can do the same at UNT. It is a great place.”
 
Q: Thoughts on playing for Coach Choice?
 
A: “Coach Choice knows how to get to the next level and is a great coach and mentor. His coaching style and just who he is as a person definitely stood out to me.”
 
Q: Have you started recruiting for #F19HTCLUB yet?
 
A: “For sure, I have been doing my homework on kids and seeing who would fit in well at North Texas.”

Thank you, JayD, for making the effort to land this interview and thank you, Garrison, for taking the time!

Excited to hear his vision of the direction the program is heading. Having recruits recognize that "New Denton" is a reality - not just a slogan - is critical and Garrison's comments appear to confirm that the program's reputation is improving.

Could definitely see a talent like Garrison coming to town and having a LaDainian Tomlinson level impact for the Mean Green - vaulting him and the program into a national awareness we've not seen to date.

      Averaged 17.5ppg and 14 rpg his senior year in High School. The guy's a rebounder's rebounder. (from his Creighton bio) • Utilized his redshirt option. • Entered transfer portal on March 31, 2024. • Averaged 4.7 points and 6.0 rebounds in just 9.0 minutes per game in the Bahamas. • A rebounding machine, he snared eight rebounds in just under 10 minutes of Creighton’s exhibition game win vs. Wayne State (Nov. 3). • Averaged 17.5 points and 14.0 rebounds per game as a senior, earning All-District honors. • Former Houston (Tenn.) High School teammate of current Bluejay teammates Johnathan Lawson and Mason Miller, where they were coached by Mason’s dad Mike Miller. • Was also an All-Region 8-6A wide receiver on the football team, leading the team in both receptions and touchdowns. • Father Vance is the offensive line coach for UNLV Football who has also worked at Virginia Tech, Memphis, Georgia and Clemson in his career.

      This is great news. I wanted us to get this kid last year. He originally signed with St. Louis....when Phil Forte was on their staff. But, like Layne Taylor with us, Brock got out of his letter of intent (with SLU)....and was back out being recruited. I hoped with the connection with Forte....that we'd get him last year.....but he went to Creighton.
