Reddit CFB: FSU may not be Bowl Eligible

Quote

Florida State is scheduled to play in a record 36th consecutive bowl game, the Independence Bowl, against Southern Miss on December 27. Their 6-6 record includes a win over Delaware State, an FCS program. For an FCS opponent to be countable towards bowl eligibility, the FCS program must have awarded at least 90% of the FCS scholarship limit. After our own investigation, we have determined and confirmed that Delaware State has not met the 90% threshold set by the NCAA. As a result, Florida State's bowl countable record is 5-6, thus making them ineligible for a bowl game this season. At present, there are three other bowl eligible teams that were not offered a game and it would be unprecedented for a team to go bowling without either eligibility or a waiver while teams who are eligible stay home.

I can see the NCAA making an exception because this was "not FSU's fault" (or something along that line).

Pretty sure it is the NCAA’s responsibility to ensure teams are eligible. If it’s anybody’s fault it is the NCAA, therefore the s will certainly be swept under the rug.

The problem you would also have now if you replaced them is trying to find a team where all of their players had not already taken off for the holidays. In addition not sure how many coaches would want to play with no prep time.

Yes and no. This really is a "no lose" situation. If you lose, well, you just stepped in at the last second with no prep time. But you do get to say you went to a bowl and joined 1/2 of all bowl teams that lost. If you win - sweet!

Regardless, if someone steps in they will get incredible publicity for this. That is IF the NCAA follows it's own rules and doesn't allow FSU into the game.

All reports are that FSU will still play in the bowl.

Nonetheless, I saw the original r/cfb post right when it came out and wondered if it would get picked up.  Boy howdy did it get picked up.  Snarky remarks in the fallout were that OP would not be getting a contract from ESPN because he did too much journalism with a capital J instead of relying on twitter soundbites from the locker room.

If you truly hate UTSA, this news makes you smile. They will sit at home with no bowl game, while a more popular team plays in a bowl when not eligible.

I can see that...but I would hope that even those who find it funny would also agree that the NCAA screwed up and that it's still wrong, even if humorously so.
