A college party was so massive it crashed straight through the apartment floor

Recommended Posts

The sound of constant jumping from the apartment directly above her had become a grim routine for sophomore Carley Carroll, long before the disastrous events of the University of North Texas homecoming game weekend.

“Every weekend a different party,” the student told CBS-11. And during some of those parties, Carroll would watch her ceiling go up and down like a trampoline. Sometimes she would even call police in Denton, Tex., to complain — half-worried that it might collapse.

And yet, Carroll said, “It’s one of those things you don’t think is actually going to happen.”

Then, on Saturday, the North Texas Mean Green walloped the University of Texas at El Paso 45-10 in the big game, and Carroll’s upstairs neighbors threw a party to remember.

Police estimated that 100 people crammed into the third-story apartment above her that night — which like every unit in the complex was occupied by college students.

Well... they say any press is good press.

I was listening to national Fox News on my Sirious car radio this morning & they mentioned this story, but said that it had happened at the University of North Texas.  UNT should send them a note asking them to correct that & tell them it did not happen on our campus.

Anyone else remember the fancy multi-story hotel in Kansas City years ago when something similar like this happened?   Yet in that tragedy limbs were found in various spots where the floor had fallen on party go'ers and many died.

Our UNT students were very blessed this last Saturday night that no one died.  Matter of fact, almost a miracle that no one did.

Which apartment did this happen at?  Was it one of the old ones in Cement City?

The Ridge off of 288.

Sounds like crappy Apartments, Crappy Tenant, Crappy Management to let it get to this point after many complaints.

The Ridge is all of the above. No sounds like about it.

All these student living complexes that pop up around campus are more or less glorified dorms ran by slumlords who take advantage of naive students.

What if this wasn't a student living complex and just a regular apartment complex and there were a large number of people, let's say 50 post college adults (even though the reported number involved in the party was more), were throwing a massive party in a 3rd floor unit, and the floor collapses ... then what?

for those curious and may know it by a different name, I've heard that this was the complex named Jefferson Commons during my time at UNT.

And naive parents in many cases willing to ignorantly foot the bill.

Some of my friends who went to more known schools have been commenting that they didn't know North Texas partied this hard. This is major party street cred.

In the late 70's we were regulars in Playboy's top party school list. Not that it was something to be proud of, of course.

Now the cheapest student apartment complex in Denton will have to raise its prices to pay for it.

Glad I don't live there anymore.

I'd be shocked if Denton Code Enforcement hasn't already paid the complex a visit. After something this public, the City will likely want to be certain nothing ever happens there again. That probably means some very strict enforcement with fines. The owners should be looking for a new management company to clean things up or they will be out a lot of money.

Do you think they will get their deposit back?

The one's on the third floor or the one's on the second who got surprise visitors?

I know that playing Army 3 times in what seems like a year is overkill.  That said, there is a real passion about playing this team both on and off the field.
Heres what I know, every time we play them it is a dogfight.  They have some of the best fans I have ever seen us have in Apogee both in number and quality.  The atmosphere they brought to Apogee last night was special.
I realize that playing them is a defensive coordinators nitemare.  And I know that we have played them a lot in a short amount of time.  I just think that there is something developing between these two programs that should not be ignored.

DENTON, Texas (AP) — Trevor Moore kicked a 39-yard field goal with 5 seconds left to give North Texas a wild 52-49 victory over Army on Saturday night, ending the Black Knights' six-game winning streak.
Mason Fine threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns, including a quick 10-yard toss with no timeouts left to get the Mean Green (8-3) a little closer for Moore's winning kick.
The longest winning streak for Army (8-3) since 1996 ended despite 244 yards rushing and two touchdowns from quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw.
"My most important thing is winning football games," said Bradshaw, who set Army's single-season rushing record at 1,472 yards, breaking Collin Mooney's 9-year-old record of 1,339. "If I have zero yards and we win the game, I'll be happier than having a million yards and losing the game."
