I am surprised no one here has mentioned it .... ..  I am far from anti gun .. own several .. but I see no purpose in the public having assault guns...   They are lousy hunting guns .. usually too small calibre ( unlike a 30-06) to knock down a feral hog and often the deer doesn't drop immediately and runs off and dies... [ found several dead ones on my land ] and who needs a clip holding 100 shells (he had them) .. Well maybe drug gang people do ... Home protection.??  ... rather have a handgun, easier to handle, or shotgun.  .... Guns are not toys... He was using some guns that shot at a rate of 700 shots per min.... geezzz.

.

Armies prefer smaller calibres now to just create casualties not deaths so much. .... Wounded people take more people to deal with then  than dead ones...weakening an opposing army.  That explains why large calibre ones like used in WWI and WWII somewhat  are not used so much any more ... Also explains why such a small percent shot  in Vegas died.

When it comes to the military - Larger caliber weapons and ammunition are bulkier and heavier compared to smaller caliber weapons. Something to ponder if you have to carry said weapons and ammunition.

That is true ..... but isn't the main reason for change so I have heard..  .. and heard mine  a couple of ways... Both make sense but I think what I heard is the main one.   In any case none of those assault guns  make the best hunting guns... Why does the general public need to have one .. especially they are being easily converted and killing so many people in mass shootings.  Other civilized countries seem to do fine without them.

I think this statement is subjective. I know a couple people who hunt that love using "assault" style guns and are pretty good at it.

There are some misnomers and other inaccuracies in comments in this thread. They grate on my nerves whenever I see or hear them. I do not wish to get into a pissing contest with any of my friends (or even my enemies, if that is the case) on this board.  I would like to offer two links, one a radio interview and one a TV interview with factual information. I know (not on a personal basis) the guy interviewed because I patronize his business when I want to "exercise" my firearms. Disclaimer: People who do not want to hear facts should not listen to these.

  • 2 weeks later...

As I learned at North Texas ... always consider the sourse  ..... do they have anything to gain from a certain position..... Both do ....

.True most people do NOT make guns into "automatic" weapons" with bump stocks or other modifications but a few do .... the guy in Vegas did...  and several more involved in shootings have too.  .... that is the problem.

Here are some more facts from a source with no economic interest in the firearms business, for those who would deem that more credible.  See if the opinion changes.

If so many shooters have used bumpstocks, why had I never heard about them until about 2 weeks before the shooting?

In my experience, they are just a novelty. I never gave a thought to buying one. A good way to burn out a good barrel and (I hear) it takes a lot of practice to make it function correctly. IMO the furor is much ado about nothing and just a political stunt to create an opening for further attacks on the Second Amendment.

I can think of at least 58 people who disagree.

and...for the umpteenth god damn time..no one wants to ban guns. no one is going to come into your home and take away your pistol or your rifle or even mess with your complete misunderstanding of the second amendment. They're all yours to keep.

There is no slippery slope. Want to hunt? Cool..kill me a deer and I'll cook you some damn fine venison steaks. Want to perpetuate the myth that that pistol you keep unloaded, locked and with the ammo in separate room is there to keep your family safe from, i don't know, gang violence and sharia law? Totes, brah. Want to go to the range and get off by firing a few rounds because someone guilted you into believing porn is the devil's doing? It's your wanker...do what you will with it.

want to easily maximize the rounds per second ability of your gun so as to increase the casualties of the crowd you're indiscriminately firing into? Hmm...we as a society should probably examine that

If the TRUE intent is to ban bumpstocks, then pass a law that clearly and specifically bans bumpstocks. Period.

The problem is that it will solve nothing. Some sick SOB will find a way to accomplish the same result using a coat hanger. The people who intend to do evil will always find a way.

There are instructions on how to simulate rapid fire using a rubber-band if you go looking hard enough.

Didn't have to look hard at all. I am blown away!! We are going to have to ban rubber bands!!  After your comment, when I had time, I just searched once..."rubber band bump stock video". Some of the stuff that is on YouTube has been out there for six years!

Check this out.

Or this..

Then, when rubber bands are banned...

There are instructional videos on YouTube for making meth. I guess since that's the bar, we have zero need for drug laws too?

The logic of some of you is baffling. If something isn't 100% effective then nothing should be done. Of course, this is the only realm in which you feel that way.

Ever thought, or cared, that you probably lose some people that would normally side with you because of the tone or your response?  I really agree with your point when I strip away all of the condescending shots at those you don't necessarily share a belief system.

do you remember how after the FAU debacle we kinda bonded over our mutual distaste for the ridiculous line people took post-game? how we agreed that certain posters sounded like such giant douches repeating the same, tired line of bitching and reactionary emotional responses?

that is from a sample size of some 300 hard-core UNT fans.

now...magnify that to anything resembling a national level.

do you understand how frustrating that can be?

do you understand how, with so many, there is never a "convincing " argument? that I'm so far past trying to bring anybody into "my side" because they're so far indoctrinated with the propaganda from the other side that either the only thing they hear is "big bad govment is commin for our guns" or they revert to this strange all-or-nothing place of argument...if this psycho hadn't have used bump-stocks he'd have used rubber-bands...you wanna ban rubber-bands too?  can't do nothing bout a bad man with a gun...

no. I want to help prevent the apparent simplicity with which this dude turned a hunting tool into a military weapon. if it's though a commercial product, we should do something about that. if it's through a youtube fix, then let's make the dissemination of that info illegal.

we don't need to ban guns. in any way, shape or form.

what we need is both be far more discerning of who has guns and to what ends and to have a legitimate conversation as to what sort of arsenal (both makes and quantity) john q. public american should have access to. the second amendment...no matter how bastardized the interpretation gets...never guaranteed a person an unlimited arsenal.

And I agree with this post above and the tone. I think what threw me off with the first post was the shots that you kind of took at people of faith. I am a Christian and I would take it that you are not and that's fine. Good post.

I mean...I'm not, but save perhaps for a frustration/point-emphasizing GD, where did I take a shot at Christianity?

I was only pointing out that just because you "ban" something doesn't make the problem actually go away said ban is attempting to solve.

We could limit ammunition sales but there is nothing to stop someone from buying the limit every month and stockpile said ammunition. One could even ask friends to buy ammunition on their behalf although that might raise suspicion on their intent.

Net-Net of what I'm trying to say is bad people will continue to do bad things regardless of how hard we might try to good things. Sometimes the best of intentions have extremely negative (and unforeseen) consequences, so actions need to be thought out thoroughly.

UNTFan23  -- Sounds like you want heroin, cocaine, meth,  opium, and other drugs legalized....  making them illegal just makes getting them more difficult ... but doesn't stop use.... same argument you are using. ... .

I repeat , I am not anti-gun.. (own them that own rural land) but see no real purpose in making assault -type guns and huge clips available..  They are not good hunting guns and unless you are very unusual (like a drug dealer) the normal person doesn't need them for self defense.. other guns are better... They are often used  in mass murders.

No, I've never said anything close to that. I'm merely attempting to say that while laws are great, people still break them and sometimes, laws with good intentions inflict bad and unforeseen consequences on the wrong group of people. Just because drugs are illegal does not make them harder to get. People get caught with illegal drugs all the time. Just watch an episode of LivePD and you'll see how many interactions with the police departments to show follows involve drugs in some form or fashion.

So you want  control of drugs .. but not assault guns...  You claim control doesn't stop or make the situation more difficult for either group. So why bother if control doesn't help at all. --- Your picture seems to indicate you are no fan of guns  (suicide shown ) ..confusing.
