NCAA Hands Down Verdict on Louisville

The NCAA’s Committee on Infractions ruled Thursday that the Cardinals will have to vacate victories in which players competed while ineligible from December 2010 to July 2014, but its release did not definitively state that the school’s 2013 national title banner will come down.

The punishment is the culmination of an investigation that began in August 2015 when Louisville learned that escort Katina Powell was set to release a tell-all book. Powell’s book alleged that former Louisville basketball staffer Andre McGee paid for strippers and escorts to dance for or have sex with Cardinals players and recruits at parties typically held in the on-campus basketball dorm named for Pitino’s late brother-in-law.

The NCAA ruled that Louisville coach Rick Pitino failed to properly monitor his program and suspended him for the first five ACC games of the 2017-18 season. Among the other more minor penalties that Louisville received are scholarship reductions, recruiting limitations and four years of probation.

So.....minor penalties for a high profile program for  a pretty big "no no" it seems to me.  No loss of post-season play?  But, have heard that Louisville has suspended Pitino.  How long?  Don't know.  Will they fire him?  Highly highly doubtful. Ho hum, the NCAA marches on.

I don't think that Louisville suspended him. The NCAA suspended him for the first 5 ACC games this season. I would be surprised if the school does anything beyond the NCAA punishment.

Louisville did impose some of their own penalties. Post-season ban, reduced scholarships and recruiting visits for 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

They lost their post season play 2 years ago I believe self imposed ban, you know when they had one of their bad teams that wouldn't make a run anyway. NCAA is a farse as far as I'm concerned.  USC they did the right thing, Penn state they started to, then shied away.  Baylor nope, UNC Nope, Louisville nope.  SMU yep.

Vacating national championships is stupid.  Just like USC in whatever year, 2004?  The NCAA had to have damn well known what was going on, but Reggie Bush was waaaay too much of a ratings draw to do anything about it in the moment.  Nope, just wait a few years, come in, take the banner down, and pretend that the game was never played and that you never took in any of that sweet, sweet television money.

Im currently a student at UofL. You guys have got it all wrong about this situation. Im cool with the punishment, but vacating wins is dumb. Pretend like things that happened didnt happen is rather stupid and a dancer at the dorm, while immoral, did not make the players play better. In fact, most of the guys that even participated in the stripper parties didnt ever commit to UofL.

Kinda weird: suggests that behavior off the field is irrelevant to the kind of student athlete you want representing you.

But wasn't this entire situation put together by an assistant coach? If so, that's textbook cheating.  And it doesn't matter if they committed or not.

Kind of like SMU got in trouble with their recruiting of Eric Dickerson and A&M didn't because SMU provided him with a better car than A&M?

The legend of Dickerson's NCAA testimony is that he didn't say anything that could hurt SMU, but asked the invesitgators a hypothetical. "If I was given a car by a booster of a school, but didn't go to the school and didn't return the car, is that an NCAA violation?" The answer was no, it's technically not. Dickerson drove a maroon and white something through out his college career. I think it was a Camero or a Tran Am, but I'm not certain. The fact is was maroon and white was a running joke. Dickerson spent a lot of time on or near the NT campus as our African-American coeds were prettier (and I think more numerous) than those at SMU.

Technically speaking, USC is still National Champions that year.  The Coaches Poll (which was tied in with the BCS) vacated their NC, but the AP Poll said they would not vacate their title.

My prediction.

Louisville will get the following sanctions.

1.  Only one hooker per recruit for the next 2 years bumped to 2 hookers in years 3 to 5.

2.  Strippers must wear pasties during the 17'-18' school year and recruits may not touch the merchandise.  Pasties come off next year and touching resumes in 2020.

3.  Rick Pitino is no longer allowed to have sex on the tables of Louisville restaurants.  He must be outside the city limits and the women must sign a form admitting the sex was agreed upon in advance and not forced upon them.

4.  Pitino and the Cardinals must provide free sponsorship space for Trojan condoms.
