Need a VAST improvement in QB play for that jump to occur...

Y'all can downvote based on who posted all you want, but it's the truth.

Fine had 1,500 yards, 6 TDs, 5 INTs in an offense that's tailored made for QBs to thrive. Saying you need better play from that position is a fair criticism.

Its SEC but long story short he will improve.

The question is what is Fine's ceiling, and how far from it is he. None of us will know until several games into next season.

But I think we all agree that QB play HAS to improve next season for this thing to work.

How is saying the QB play needs improvement different from saying it will improve? If it is a fact that it will improve, then doesn't that mean saying it needs improvement a fact as well?

Looking at that list, and remembering Dodge recruited Dak Prescott, thank goodness he never showed up in Denton.  Some of you would have run him out of town on a rail.

My take is we have a promising Soph. in Fine returning that appears to be a leader with the work ethic needed to improve.  We are bringing in a JUCO that put up impressive numbers in a strong conference and a HS'er that has already enrolled that is probably one of our best QB recruits in years, so the positional situation is improving.  The other question that will effect our QB's success/failure is the improvement from our OL.

I'm counting on the kid who just enrolled early to be the starting QB next season...and, thus, for the 2017 "Air Raid" to be more "Air Raidy."

2016 UNT "Air Raid"
Fine: nine games started, 6 TD passes
Morris: four games started, 9 TD passes

Now, if, uh, 6 turned out to be 9, Jimi Hendrix wouldn't mind.  But, I'll bet that Littrell counted on more than 15 TD passes out of his "Air Raid."  It was slightly more than the 12 tossed by McCarney/Canales' non-"Air Raid" offenseof 2015.***

A bona fide QB - of any academic classification - could probably toss 15 by the seventh game of the year in 2017 in a run-of-the-mill "Air Raid" offense.

Give Littrell's 2016 "Air Raid" a mulligan...much of it self-inflicted.

***McCarney/Canales' non-"Air Raid" offense accounted for 12 TD passes during the regular season.  Seth Littrell's 2016 "Air Raid" offense also accounted for (only?) 12 TD passes during the 2016 regular season.  Given an extra game, Littrell's "Air Raid" offense produced three TD passes during a bowl game...all thrown by the QB Littrell didn't think should be the regular starter, to push the 2016 TD pass total to 15.  So...there ya have it.

Fine should continue to get better, but I hope he is really challenged for minutes next year.   Fine may have been a good true freshman QB but he wasn't near the QB that Littrell needs in this offense.

Fine certainly can become that QB, or he may be beaten out by a newcomer.  Whatever, it is comforting to know that NT should have a better QB than freshman Fine.   Most likely that will be sophomore Fine, but Littrell has shown that he is going to play who he likes best for the position despite experience level.    The early benching of Morris may have been a mistake, but Littrell quickly made that decision.

Nothing against Pearson, and I hope he turns into the QB savior needed by UNT, but to say he is "our best QB recruit in years" says far more about UNT's dismal QB recruits than it does Pearson.

Pearson had one other FBS offer (Wyoming) and is a 2 star recruit. The bolded is a big overstatement.

This kid had 2 more FBS offers and actually broke some school passing records:

https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/51226

And how could we forget about this well traveled savior that wasn't, who was a FAR better RECRUIT than Pearson:

https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/maple/102964

So, no, Pearson isn't the "one of the best QB recruits in years." His offers and his ranking don't indicate this at all. And since he has no on the field performance, I'm at a loss for why this statement would be made.

EDIT: Oh, and let's not forget about one of the highest rated recruits of the past 4 years, Damarcus Smith:

Dude, Pearson's other FBS offer was from Wyoming, okay?  The Wyoming whose head coach is Craig Bohl...the guy who recruited and coached:

e2514efc12d4fe082fdc20ab2f336dc3_XL.jpg

As for Vizza, he was offered by Nevada whose coach had who recruited and coached:
Super+Bowl+XLVII+Baltimore+Ravens+v+San+

It's not Vizza' fault that Dodge hired high school coaches and thought he could get away with high school blocking schemes that lacked tight ends, h-backs, or fullbacks.  Vizza did the best he could here.  Given a more realistic (cognizant?) coaching staff, he'd have been able to play four years here without getting blasted every time he dropped back to pass.

Cade Pearson is an excellent get.  He is the best QB prospect we've had in here in many years.  Berglund and Smith don't enter the discussion because they had already been at multiple stops before they got here.  No one except for us were offering them the third time around at the FBS level.

Pearson is already on campus.  So, my guess is, he's going to have a work ethic equal to or exceeding Mason Fine's.  And, therefore, again, it would not surprise me in the least if he were starting QB when the Lamar Cardinals roll into Apogee on September 2, 2017.

Based on what? He is a 2 star with one other FBS offer.

I want to know exactly what criteria you are using to make this statement, because it isn't recruit rating or offers. It isn't on the field FBS performance. That leaves your opinion as the basis

I find your opinion historically unreliable and inaccurate.

So if Bohl is such a QB expert, where are all the other FBS schools jumping to offer Pearson?

Look, I like the kid. I think he has a much better arm the Fine. But to make the statement that he is the "one of the best QB recruits in years" is pure sunshine pumping.

He is what he is, which is a 2 star recruit with 2 FBS offers. At least until he proves otherwise.

I just told you based on what:  he was offered a scholarship by Craig Bohl, the coach who recruiting, signed and coached Carson Wentz, the NFL's #1 Draft pick in 2016 and starter for the Philadelphia Eagles.

It means nothing to you that Craig Bohl also thought Pearson's talent was worthy of a scholarship?  Whether it means something to you or not, though, is wholly irrelevant.  Bohl has shaped up to be a pretty good coach with an eye for talent at the FCS and FBS level.  He won three titles at ND State and has gotten Wyoming off the mat in three seasons.

So if Bohl is such the standard bearer for FBS college QBs, where was the avalanche of FBS offers after Wyoming?

Its a terrible argument, and one that falls completely apart under scrutiny.

Wyoming's current QB, Josh Allen, only had two FBS scholarship offers - Wyoming and Eastern Michigan.  He led the MWC in TD passes with 28, was second in passing yards, and led Wyoming to a bowl game.

But...Bohl doesn't know QB talent?  Allen, like Pearson, was a two-star recruit.

Pearson is a big get for us. The biggest QB get since, at least, Vizza.

If Pearson were Allen, you would have an argument.

He isn't. Not yet.

This is your opinion. It's not a fact and is backed up by nothing more than "that guy recruited that guy, so this guy must be good." Terrible argument.

We all hope young Mr. Pearson builds up to the green Kool aid status you give him, but there is nothing to indicate that this will most certainly happen, and nothing to indicate he is any better a recruit than the previous list I provided. There is actually tangible evidence that he is worse.

I hope he throws for 50 TDs as a true freshman.
