The fourth annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List was announced Tuesday at the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce East Texas Kick-off Luncheon.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year college.

The Watch List will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to five finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and the previous winners.

The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for Jan. 11, 2017.

Hmm, let's take a look at who sponsors this award:
"The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is presented by SPORTyler, Inc., in conjunction with the City of Tyler, the Tyler Convention & Visitors Bureau and Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce. "

Jeffery happens to be from a town 1 hour away from these fine folks, and if we know anything about East Texas folks... they all know and like each other.

Heavy favorites for this award:  Greg Ward, Pat Mahomes, Cannon & Linwood from Baylor, and Baker Mayfield, who won last year.   If Wilson has a nice year, I bet he's a semifinalist.   If Wilson has a break-out season, I would not be surprised to see him make the finalist list.

EDIT: as discussed below, Baker Mayfield did not win this award last year.   Greg Ward Jr., who played at John Tyler, did.   Likely going to take an early-season injury to him, or a freak season from Mahomes in order for him to lose.

You might want to check again who won last year.

Ooops.  Misread this from their website:

"* Houston Quarterback Greg Ward, Jr., last year’s award recipient, is again on the Watch List; along with one of last year’s finalists, Oklahoma Quarterback Baker Mayfield. "

Not a shock that a guy from Tyler won the award though...
