North Texas set to begin Year 1 under Littrell

IRVING, Texas – North Texas football in recent years has been a case of untapped potential.

The school sits in Denton, Texas, part of the talent-rich Dallas-Fort Worth area. UNT also features a sparkling new facility in Apogee Stadium, which opened in 2011.

Yet the Mean Green has posted just one winning season since 2005, a 9-4 campaign in 2013. The program has won three or less games seven times in that stretch, including a 1-11 season last year that included the October firing of Dan McCarney.

North Texas tried to turn the page on that lackluster era this offseason with the hiring of Seth Littrell. The former North Carolina assistant head coach will begin his first season in charge of the Mean Green on Sept. 3 with a game against fellow DFW-Metroplex school SMU.

UNT junior running back Jeffrey Wilson said Littrell and his staff have come in and breathed some life into the program.

Littrell and his staff are “not letting us be mediocre, not letting us settle for less anymore,” Wilson told the Daily News last month at Conference USA Media Days. “Like I said, they’ve raised our standards to a whole other level and they expect us to meet those. That’s what we’ve been doing.”

Wilson and senior linebacker Fred Scott both said Littrell has come in and told his team that he wants to make a bowl game in Year 1 of his tenure.
