MGB: Former Kimball coach Snoop Johnson has applied at UNT

Johnson would definitely deepen ties into the DFW AAU scene.  Recruiting is such a ruthless business.  I don't think there is any doubt that Johnson could help land a few players.

... until he's fired with the rest of Benford's staff 9 months from now.  He could be the one "holdover" coach that usually stays when there's a coaching change.  I don't know anything about why he was fired but I would be extremely leary about that.

no no no no no no no no no

This guy has had scandal after scandal.  He would be a great foot in the door for all the wrong reasons.  We are better than this.  DON'T do it.

He absolutely could.  He was an EXCELLENT recruiter at Kimball... ALA all those state championship runs he had.  No thanks.

Agreed, his recruiting and other black hat tactics are what got him in trouble and eventually fired from the HS level.  At least recruiting would not be an issue at the college level, but he has shown he is quite capable of bending the rules.  Unfortunately, you can say the same about many great coaches (Brown, Calipari, Williams, Boeheim, Pitino, Majerus, Sutton, on and on and on and on).

Not advocating it, but you are naive if you don't think most coaches out there are looking for an edge and pushing the envelope.  Coaches get fired every day for not putting up enough W's.

I will not be shocked to see this happen.  It seems like Benford and Johnson had some history together when Frazier decided to come to UNT.

Yes, but all those guys you mentioned are at BIG time schools with BIG time $$ for the NCAA they won't kill those programs.  They don't need any excuse to bury us.  Bad hire here IMO, but hey who knows.

He would not be my first, second, third,etc... choice either.  Definitely not an advocate, but he (and his family) were mainstays in Dallas basketball for years.  It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

@cooley would be interested in your opinion on Mr. Snoop.

BINGO! Benford will pull out all the stops to try and save himself. He knows he is a dead man walking.

He would be an immediate shoe in the door for players all across the state.  Dallas, South Dallas, Mesquite, SOC, Desoto, FW, Houston you name it he's tied in for sure. I just worry he'd flirt with disaster one too many times and get us in a big pickle.

And doesn't care about the damage he does to this program in the process.

Hopefully the first order of business of the new AD is to fire a guy that can only do harm from this point forward.

If I had a say, I'd reassign Benford. I'd then name Evans interim head coach for this season, and let him pick his own assistant.

Our basketball program was a source of pride when Jones left for LSU. I can't understand the logic in believing the coach responsible for our demise could figure out how to resurrect us off the slab. History and the odds are against Benford leading us to a successful season. Avoiding the inevitable only sets our basketball program back another year.

I believe our girls will have a successful season (over .500). If Benford would have been let go when Petersen was shown the door, we would be a season into a new era, and more North Texas fans might be excited about this upcoming basketball season.

when has Pitino ever bent the rules?? Am I missing something?

Louisville is in the middle of an investigation involving hookers for recruits. He was also involved wth sanctions at Hawaii early in his career. And he famously got caught having sex with someone not named Mrs. Pitino in a restaurant a few years back.

I am a student at Louisville currently. Neither of those have really been a big deal here. He had a brief affair with a lady who spent time in prison for attempting to extort money from him. Secondly, one of his former players got strippers for recruits. Louisville has never cheated academically, nor have they ever cheated by paying recruits or anything of that nature. Trust me, they would get way better players to come here given the insane facilities at this university. What Louisville has done, is form corporate partnerships and spend lots and lots of money to get themselves in position to be one of the top 3 or 4 athletic departments in the country. I don't think want a cheater either but Louisville is a school that we should be attempting to emulate in just about every single way!!!

Louisville definitely pushed their way into big time sports.  Congrats to them.  However, when I think about example of a clean program I do not think of Louisville.  Their athletic program lives in the gray area.  It comes with the territory.  They are a former city college that has clawed their way into big time sports.  I expect their to be some dirt under their nails.

As an added detail to the infidelity story, he cheated on his wife with the wife of his equipment manager.  No doubt she appears to have been batshit crazy, but the fact remains.

Please don't try to absolve Pitino from any knowledge of the recruiting issues.  He is the man in charge, he is responsible for what goes on just like all the other head coaches.

Don't forget, it was an admin at smoo that did the cheating, that's why LB got suspended for half a season.

Here is some light reading regarding the governor having to step in and replace half the BOR (but was able to keep the coaching staff in tact) among other juicy tidbits:  http://csnbbs.com/thread-782330.html

STOP. Pitino knows everything that goes on at Louisville involved Bball... You are a fool if you think otherwise.  One of his coaches that he fired has come out and said so.  I believe it was an Outside the Lines or a 30 for 30.  I'll have to look.

I also can't ( just kidding I totally can) believe the NCAA let Louisville get away with the self imposed post season ban when they were absolutely awful and weren't going to make the post season anyway.

Royce if I remember correctly played both football and basketball at NT.   Yes, he obviously recruited at the high school, a sin at almost all high ranking HS programs.

I doubt very seriously if Royce at the college level would be much different from other assistants hired primarily to recruit.  So save some of the indignation at hiring Johnson.  Secondly, Benford is not going to find many who want to work for him in a win big or gone season.
