Wondering what this is all about? - READ THIS

Steve Forbes

Age:  50

Current job: Head coach at East Tennessee State

Current contract situation: Base salary of $202,000, signed through 2019-20 season.

Experience: One year as a D1 head coach, at ETSU. Seven total years as a JUCO head coach at Northwestern Florida State College as recently as 2013 (2 years), Barton County Community College (Kansas) ending in 1998 (3 years), and Southwestern Community College (Iowa) ending in 1993 (2 years). 15 years as a D1 assistant at Wichita State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Illinois State, Louisiana Tech, and Idaho. Four years as a JUCO assistant, all back in the 80's and 90's.

Best year as a head coach: 2015-16. 23-11 overall record (and counting), 14-4 in conference. Lost SoCon tournament championship to Chattanooga. No NCAA or NIT auto-bid; scheduled to play Louisiana Tech in the inaugural Vegas 16 (which only has 8 teams playing in it... go figure) on 3/28/16.

Worst year as a head coach: Well, he only has the one year... So, I guess, also 2015-16! See above, criticize aggressively.

What makes him worth considering? He's coached in Texas (at A&M) and at Louisiana Tech. He's worked for Billy Gillespie, Gregg Marshall, and Bruce Pearl. Both seasons at Northwestern Florida State, he led the school to the NJCAA championship game. The school had only made it there once before, back in 1995 when they were still known as Okaloosa-Walton College. He's old enough to buy alcohol without pulling out his ID, unlike most of the other possible current D1 coaches we could probably get.

Whycome would he'd suck real bad? One of the assistant coaches fired because of the Bruce Pearl recruiting scandal purge, where Forbes kinda-maybe-sorta tried to deceive an NCAA investigator when confronted with a photo of Pearl having improper contact (not sexually, you perverts) with a recruit. And maybe if he was REALLY any good at Northwest Florida State College, he woulda actually WON those JUCO national championships!!1! His successor there (Steve DeMeo, and don't worry, you'll see a thread for him in a few days) did!

Additional comments: He used to be a head coach at a school in Iowa. He almost won a national championship as a coach at a school in Florida. DIDN'T WE JUST LIVE THROUGH THIS NIGHTMARE??? On the plus side, ETSU sold $20k worth of season tickets at his introductory press conference, which at UNT could mean as much as 190-240 general reserved ticket packages. And that would be a 10% or higher jump over our (reported) attendance last year alone.

What would be his buyout though???

https://mgtvwjhl.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/11232015untitled_2015112312372600.pdf

$300k if he gets a power 5 conference job or a TV gig, $150k for anything else.

But he's 22-6, on track for NCAA or NIT, and probably on the radar for bigger programs than us.

If we wanted him, last year was probably our last shot.

Just started reading these, got excited.

Then I realized they're from last year......wah wah.

I had intended to do almost twice as many (at least) as what you see here now.

Then RV made a quick announcement that we were keeping Benford around for another year, and it gutted my enthusiasm for it. It's a lot of work for absolutely no purpose, especially when you see how much has changed just since last year, and how many of these guys have either jumped out of our league again or fallen off and might not be sellable as a quality hire anymore.
