While most golfers look to the British open, UNT alumn Carlos Ortiz is playing at the Barbasol Open the other pga tournament going on this week. He ist still fighting to make the Fedes Cup playoffs (best 125 players), and is close prety much needs one more top 20 result I think.

And after the first two days at the Barbasol things are looking not too shabby. Carlos is tied for 6th, having shot minus 7 overall, which is just two shots off the lead.

Sadly Carlos' 4th day did not go to plan at all. He was plus 3 for the day after the first two holes already and nevery quite recovered finishing the day +3, the tournament -4 and tied for 56th. That still netted him 9 Fedex cup points, but that is a bit little compared to where he could have been. He is currently ranked 107th and needs to remain in the 125 to qualify for the playoffs (and renew his PGA tour card). The number of points he already has could be good enough if the competition does not step up too strongly, but I feel like he needs about 25 points more to be safe. In those terms this was somewhat of a missed opportunity, seeing where he was after day 2 and 3.

Carlos is playing the Canada open this week, and the first two rounds went quite ok. He is quite far off the lead, but he made the cut, is currently at -4 and tied for 44th.

Not to mention that on day one he produced this doozie: http://www.pgatour.com/video/2015/07/23/carlos-ortiz-holes-bunker-blast-for-birdie-at-rbc-canadian.html

This week Carlos is playing at the Quicken Loans Invitational (only 120 players) and has made the cut on the number (-2) with a string of birdies on the back nine of friday, and is 9 shots behind the lead. He is still in the middle of the struggle for making the playoffs and retaining his tour card. If he could finish in the top 50 that would be big in that regard.

How much money does he have to win to retain his card?

He doesn't have to win money, he has to win FedEx cup points. If he finishes in the top 125 in the FexExcup cup ranking, he qualifies for the playoffs and retains his card. If he doesn't, then he'll have to play the Web.com tour finals and try to qualify there, which is an iffy proposition.
