Sujay Lama Named Texas Coach of the Year

For the second time in his UNT career (came in 2006-2007), tennis Coach Sujay Lama has been named the Texas College Coach of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). He also won the award in 2009. Coach Lama is an excellent coach and does a great job with limited resources when compared to other Texas and CUSA institutions. He is truly deserving of the honor. Our record so far this year is below our usual standards, but most of our matches have been against highly ranked teams. The hope is that we peak for the Conference USA Tournament at Rice in mid-April.

GO MEAN GREEN!

Excellent! Great news. Coach Lama is a credit to this institution. He is one of the best speakers we have on our coaching staffs...always so very positive with his message. And, he is a big supporter of other programs as well. I often see him at basketball, football, etc. games. When you talk about coaches that establish a family atmosphere and really care about their program, players and fellow staffers, Coach lama ranks right up at the top of any list.

Congrats to Coach Lama...well deserved...well earned.

Has coach Lama garnered any attention from other universities?

Wonder if he's going to be here for a while, a-la Hedlund, or if he'd jump at a P5 offer for more $, like JJ, Murzek, Aston, Wintrich?

Not sure, but I think he likes it here, he has younger kids in school here and things like that that so that would be a consideration I'm sure.

I think Lama is here for awhile, he had his stint at Illinois and was let go.

He has done good things, but next goal should be to dethrone Rice and right now the team is no where close to that, see last year's demolition at CUSA Tournament.

He needs healthy team and get more consistent results since the league is a little tougher than the Sun Belt, losing to NW State is not good even without #1 Girl playing, but then beating Louisville, so it is a roller coaster ride.

Considering the program before he arrived - what Lama has done is nothing short of extraordinary.

He did it by going to amazing lengths recruiting from all around the world as well. College tennis is mostly dominated by European players in tennis. They are just more consistent. He has gotten us girls from Europe, Australia, South America, etc. He is a great guy as well and wrote me a short-notice letter of recommendation back when I was involved with Club Tennis. He runs a charity event every year to raise money for folks in Nepal. We are lucky to have him for sure.

Also tough to realize we had to schedule this match against Tulsa at SMU because we are one of the few programs without indoor courts...tough to practice consistently when the weather doesn't cooperate. This has nothing to do with the loss, with Tulsa being a good team, just something that doesn't help recruiting or match preparation. We need to step it up to have a chance to contend at the conference tournament in mid-April.

This team is a probably the 3 or 4 team in a weak CUSA, Rice is heads and shoulders above the conference right now.

UNT is much too up and down right now and too many injuries have hurt. They go from losing 4-3 tight matches to getting blown off the court by Tulsa.

Hopefully the recruits are ready to play next year, any news on Liang who I believe was going to be on campus in January, her ITF ranking would have put her in Top 3, but either she is not on campus or RS.
