List of Coaching Candidates

Every AD has a list of names in the top drawer. Who should be on ours? Here is a quick list I put together of what I think are all solid coaches and are realistic. I am sure there are plenty others.

Marvin Menzies (NMSU)

Scott Sutton (Oral Roberts)

Ken Burmeister (Incarnate Word)

Scott Cross (UTA)

Danny Kaspar (TxSt)

Ron Hunter (GaSt)

Fran Fraschilla (son is a SR this year and GMG would explode if he is not on the list)

Fran was my choice three years ago, but at this point he would not be interested. He was interested because mitchell and the team he thought he might inherit had some potential. I think he would pass on the job now although I would not mind him. Other than him though I'm not sure who could do any better at this point. Edited by Andrew

I think Fran has no interest in working for this AD...

This is year three, right? So we're a year too early discussing this. The unfortunate thing is that UNT really had something going with basketball. But whatever we had is gone, the perception of the program back to Trilli days. I don't see anybody who is already a head coach wanting to come here. We're gonna have to hit the southland conference assistant coach lottery or something.

Unless that new coaching possibility is willing to make about 200k next year, Benford ain't going anywhere.

I'm telling you all that if Benford finishes theis year at .500, he will get an extension. RV is chomping at the bit to show the fans that one of his hires has improved enough to get an extension. The BOR would be fine with it for two reasons, no buyout, and he won't cost too much to extend out for a couple of more years. Mark it down...

We have done exactly what I thought we would do in OOC. We have beaten cream puffs at home, lost to anyone with a pulse on the road, and are losses to Creighton and Tech away from going 6-6 in OOC, just as we projected. In CUSA play, getting to 9-9, with a win in the tournament, would give us a .500 record. That's the line of demarcation (sp)--anything under .500 represents a 4th year at this point. Anything .500 or better is extension time!! Can you imagine how happy the 1000 people at the Super Pit will be knowing that Benford will be our coach beyond 2015?

Because we haven't even played a conference game yet. Last year is last year. If they had wanted to make a change that would have been the time to do it.

Western Kentucky fired Ken McDonald 3 games into the Sun Belt conference season (January 6th).

They corrected course wisely, and made the NCAA tournament that same year.

It's not too soon, and it's never as late as tomorrow.

I'm of two minds when it comes to this issue. A part of me thinks that this conversation is two years too late (not that it didn't occur on GMG then as well). The other side of me thinks that once you begin a new season, you kind of cool it with the "fire coach" talk until at least late January/early February. Now, if something shockingly embarrassing happens early in the year, then I guess that's different, but I wouldn't say that that applies just yet.
