DENTON — North Texas Basketball Madness was another rousing success this year, as the Mean Green men’s and women’s basketball teams took to the Super Pit floor for the first time in front of their fans. Over 2,000 North Texas faithful were in attendance and they got a chance to see the Mean Green players for the first time this season.

The women’s team was introduced first, as they ran a Black vs. Green scrimmage for 15 minutes. After head coach Mike Petersen pumped up his team, Senior BreAnna Dawkins led the Black team to a 22-21 victory, as she scored seven points and drained a game-winning fade away jumper with 20 seconds left on the clock.

Men’s head coach Tony Benford then gave a warm welcome to those in attendance and got his guys fired up for their 15-minute White vs. Green game. Redshirt freshman Greg Wesley led the White team to a 23-16 victory with six points, all in the paint.

The Green team showed a bit of a preview for the slam dunk contest, as senior Armani Flanagan got the crowd on its feet as he picked off a pass at midcourt and went in alone for a windmill dunk. Then, freshman Jeremy Combs finished an alley-oop from senior Jordan Williams with authority for another exciting slam.

The three-point contest featured juniors Kasiney Williams and Todd Eaglin, who made 11-20 shots beyond the arc, barely edging out Flanagan and sophomore Terra Ellison, who drained 10 of their own.

Last but not least, Combs, Flanagan, Wesley and Williams showed off for the slam dunk contest. Flanagan advanced to the final round by pulling off an incredible, 360 across-the grain windmill slam. But it was Combs who took home the crown, as he took an alley-oop off the side of the backboard and finished with authority in the final round.

The next time that Mean Green fans get to see the basketball squads in action are with the first exhibition games of the season. On November 6, the women host Southern Arkansas, and on November 10, then men host Oklahoma City.
