  3. A host of UNT recruiting targets have committed over the last few days. It has seemed like one dose of bad news after another. Nick Orr, the younger brother of Zach Orr, picked TCU. Garland wide receiver James Mayden committed to Rice, which dipped into the Dallas area to land another player UNT had offered. Orr hurt a little, but the bottom line is that we are a long, long way from panic time. UNT is following a pretty reasonable plan that should pay dividends down the line. UNT has bailed on Louisiana, put pretty much all its resources in Texas, handed out offers to a around 50 players it would like to land and has kept the lines of communication open with others. UNT has already picked up a couple of decent defensive line prospects from DeSoto in Shaquel Jackson and Johnavhon Grahm. Now it’s a waiting game. Rice is sitting there with a dozen players committed, so is SMU. Houston has 11. UTSA and UTEP have two each. There are not enough scholarships to go around for all C-USA/AAC-level players in the state, not if they want to stay home. Some of the teams UNT competes against are going fill up. Some already are a certain positions. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/06/unt-following-the-only-reasonable-path-to-signing-day.html/
  4. We are about to head down the home stretch in football recruiting season, which pretty much amounts to life and death in college football. You either have the players or you don’t. So where does UNT stand and what are the storylines to follow the next few weeks? Here’s the way I see it. Let’s start with what UNT has in terms of players who will count towards its class of 20. Here is the list: UNT commits QB (2) — Brock Berglund, Valor Christian (Colo.)*, Dajon Williams, Pflugerville Connally CB (2) — Chad Davis, Fort Bend Bush; James Jones, Kilgore College DE (1) — Quenton Brown, Eastern Arizona CC LB (4) — Sed Ellis, Paris; Sergio Medina, Hahnville, La.; Calvin Minor, Lewisville; Fred Scott, Kennedale OL (5) — Justin Manu, Snow College (Utah); Shawn McKinney, Trinity Valley JC; Cody Nelson, Keller; Harrison Sorge, Wichita Falls Rider; Dominic Walker, Fort Bend Austin S (1) — John Schilleci, Guyer; WR (2) — Darvin Kidsy, Fort Bend Elkins; Turner Smiley, Frisco Wakeland * Transfer currently enrolled at UNT Transfers who don’t count toward the 20 players in UNT’s class S (1) — Zed Evans Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/01/taking-a-look-at-where-unt-stands-in-recruiting.html/

  6. D’Juan Hines Age: 17 Grade: Senior Position: Quarterback Size: 6’1”, 190 College: Hines has been recruited by the Houston, Colorado, Rice, Texas State and North Texas. Hines said he started playing football in the third grade. He recalled the feeling of scoring touchdowns and hearing the cheers, but said playing sports was also his way of making friends growing up. Playing football at Dekaney since his freshman year, Hines moved up to varsity as a sophomore. He won the starting quarterback spot as a junior and started every game en route to the school’s first state title in 2011. The quarterback hopes to improve his passing, accuracy, timing and management of the game this season. A duel threat, Amendola said Hines rushed for over 500 yards and threw for over 1,000 last year and Amendola believes he will have to take a more prominent role in this offense. The coach thinks Hines has the tools to be a college quarterback some day, and colleges seem to agree, as he has been recruited by Houston, Rice, Texas State, North Texas and Colorado. “I’m really anxious, but I’m also really anxious about this upcoming season, so I try not to think about (college) too much,” Hines said. 7. Del City coach Nick Warehime is no stranger to seeing Division I quality athletes during his long coaching career. Corey Lawrence, he said, might be the best of them. 8. And on the football recruiting front, I was able to catch up with Harrison Sorge today. Sorge was a first-team All-District 4-4A selection and has come on late in his career. He played well in one of the tougher districts in the area and held his own against players like Ryan’s Mario Edwards, who was the top recruit in the country. Edwards is headed to Florida State. Sorge was recruited by Nick Quartaro and is teammates with Dylan McDorman. The two have played together since elementary school.
