  1. Whenever the Big 12 makes a decision on expansion, the league certainly will have done its due diligence. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby will conduct video conferences with 17 schools that have contacted the league about being considered as expansion candidates, sources told ESPN. Sources also said it's "becoming less and less likely" that the league will expand to 14 teams. The most likely scenario is that the Big 12 will stay at 10 teams or only add two schools for a 12-team league with two six-team divisions, sources said. read more: http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/17281618/big-12-commissioner-bob-bowlsby-interview-17-schools-expansion
  2. Because college football's Power Five conferences prefer to play each other in bowl games, the smaller conferences are exploring opportunities to create additional bowl games next season, sources said. As many as nine locations are under consideration to begin bowl games in 2014, according to sources: Miami, Orlando, Little Rock, Ark.; Boca Raton, Fla.; Montgomery, Ala.; Los Angeles; Ireland; Dubai and either Toronto or Nassau, Bahamas. Any new bowls created in 2014 would be for the smaller conferences: the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt. An NCAA moratorium to add new bowls expires after the 2013 season. Read more: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/9364692/smaller-conferences-look-add-bowl-games-sources
  3. The seventh selection from the ACC was contracted to play in the game against an at-large team before C-USA completed the deal to fill the spot. C-USA and bowl officials will determine which selection from C-USA will play in the bowl, the sources said. The Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman, set for Dec. 27 with a 2:30 p.m. ET kickoff, will be the sixth bowl affiliated with C-USA. 4. North Texas coach Dan McCarney underwent heart bypass surgery last Friday, sources told ESPN. McCarney, 59, acknowledged in a statement that he had a medical procedure but wasn't specific. He returned to the office Friday, a week after the surgery. Doctors recommended McCarney undergo the surgery following a routine office visit earlier in the week. "The medical staff was outstanding," McCarney said in a statement released through North Texas. "I put my future in their hands and everything went great. I have already begun the road to recovery and am excited to be back in the office working toward making the Mean Green football program better." 5. If this is true, you have to think C-USA got the better of the deal essentially locking the Mountain West out of Texas and securing UTEP. I think there will still be a relationship between the two but in the end they will both have to look out for themselves. 6. Interesting take on Marinatto and the Big East's fall from grace. Evidently, Judy Genshaft the AD at South Florida was stubbornly blocking Central Florida which led to instability within the league (sound familiar). Marinatto was able to land a 1.4 billion dollar ESPN contract which the Big East unbelievably passed on and after that the floodgates opened up. The irony of this of course for North Texas is this instability led to SMU's move to the Big East which opened up an opportunity for us to join C-USA. read more: http://www.cbssports.../story/18985030
