  2. Came here to play in big games, now three in a row – how much fun are you having? Gabriel Murphy: A ton of fun. You know, that's why we came to a Power Five, to play in games like this, like you said. This one coming up's a big one, they said it's supposed to be a sold out game so we're very excited, and like you said, that's why we came here, and hopefully help the team. Grayson Murphy: Yeah, always wanted to go to Oregon, so we'll get the chance. College GameDay being there, it's gonna be that much anticipated, that much more fun. And, you know, I'm just excited. Chip Kelly said anything about the environment? Grayson Murphy: Yeah, yeah, yeah, they're playing crowd noise out here and stuff like that. We know it's gonna be loud. And then coach Kelly, coming from there back in the day, he was talking about how the atmosphere, the stadium kind of bounces noise off it and back into the stadium. So it's gonna be loud, that's really what he's been pressing on us. Any road games like that at North Texas? Gabriel Murphy: Probably the closest, I would say, is UTSA, cause that was a big rivalry. It was always like, we beat them for the conference, they'd beat us for the conference, so that was a big game for us. And last year, they was ranked No. 15 in the country, so all the fans came out, and that's probably the biggest game I've ever played in. Grayson Murphy: Yep. read more: https://www.si.com/college/ucla/football/video-gabriel-murphy-grayson-murphy-practice-10-19-22-transfers-edge-rushers-oregon-ducks-pac-12

  7. SAN ANTONIO — New UTSA Women's Basketball Head Coach Karen Aston was upfront about fans assuming her time in San Antonio will be nothing but the standard stepping stone to her next opportunity. "I just wanna be clear that I'm committed to UTSA," she said. Athletics Director Lisa Campos made the hire in the spring, and Aston and her staff have wasted no time putting their early mark on the program. "We've hit the ground running, enormously, as far as recruiting is concerned," Aston said. "I think in particular the three junior college transfers are going to help us lots." But the new hire knows those transfers are only a temporary hold for her much-bigger plans for the future. "There is no question about it. We've got to get some local players to sort of take the plunge with us and say, 'OK, we wanna build this program with you,'" Aston said. "I tell them all the time, 'Why don't you be on the (UTSA) billboard?'" Obviously the working list for any new NCAA Division 1 head coach will be quite busy, but Coach Aston is seeing action happen with the support of Campos. read more: https://www.kens5.com/article/sports/meet-karen-aston-utsa-basketball-roadrunners-sports/273-6645b801-43fc-42c0-8c17-cf5f6cb1eb0b
  8. LSU running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson has been offered the head coaching job at University of Texas at San Antonio, FootballScoop.com reported Thursday, and a deal is expected to get done. Wilson and Oklahoma State defensive coordinator coordinator Glenn Spencer were the two finalists for the job, the site reported earlier Thursday. A news station in San Antonio reported Wednesday that Spencer was the “most likely” hire for the Roadrunners and the San Antonio Express-News reported something similar. The Roadrunners, though, chose Wilson, according to FootballScoop. Wilson, a 42-year-old from New Orleans, just completed his sixth season with the Tigers. He’s helped bring in some of the nation’s best recruits while in Baton Rouge, including the Tigers’ No. 2-ranked signing group in 2014. read more: http://blogs.theadvocate.com/tigertracks/report-lsu-rb-coachrecruiting-coordinator-frank-wilson-finalist-for-utsa-job/

  10. Texas State spent decades beneath college football's upper echelon before it decided to strive for something greater. So in 2007, the university in San Marcos started raising money and mapping out a jump from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision, the NCAA's top level. Roughly 54 miles southwest, UT-San Antonio was on the verge of something even more ambitious. In 2012, UTSA went from having no football team to joining Texas State as the Lone Star State's newest FBS universities in the span of two years. Both schools, fueled by desire and donations, joined the growing list of in-state athletic departments ramping up their football programs. However, those moves come at a steep cost. Between 2013 and 2017, the schools' football programs have operated at a combined deficit of nearly $38.3 million, according to NCAA reports obtained through open records requests. Factoring in the cost of scholarships, coaching salaries and facility upgrades, football is by far the most expensive NCAA sport. For Texas State and UTSA, the lofty price tag is worth the prestige and opportunity that comes with having a football program. "In Texas, you need football," said Texas State athletic director Larry Teis when asked why that money isn't spent on another high-profile sport like men's basketball. "I hate to say it for those who don't have it, but you need football." Other schools seem to agree. Since 2010, at least six Texas schools have moved up to Division I (FCS or FBS). UT-Arlington, which shuttered its program in 1985 because of budget constraints, could be the next to join the mix. UTA athletic director Jim Baker has been in conversations regarding bringing back a football team, according to messages obtained through an open records request. Baker could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon. read more: https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/college-sports/collegesports/2018/07/30/texas-need-football-starting-college-football-programin-lone-star-state-worth-price
  11. Miner: UTSA’s inaugural football season was 2011; was last year was supposed to be ‘the year’? Karels: “Yes it was. It was the year to get a 10 win season, so it was disappointing when they finished 6-5. Their first game against Houston was canceled due to Hurricane Harvey, and they still came out and beat Baylor at McLane Stadium to open the season. The momentum of a 3-0 start, however, kind of fizzled out. The Roadrunners lost five of their last eight games and missed a bowl game. Four of those losses were by one possession and a total of 17 points.[4]” read more: https://247sports.com/college/baylor/Article/I-interview-Roadrunner-expert-Karels-on-last-years-UTSA-upset-over-Baylor-this-years-contest-and-general-thoughts-on-both-teams-120007832/
  12. A season can change directions like a Saquon Barkley jump cut. As an illustration, let’s look back at where things stood in Conference USA four weeks into 2017. Lane Kiffin’s FAU Owls were desperate for traction. They had just fallen to 1-3 after an upset loss at Buffalo, only we didn’t know it was an upset at the time. Butch Davis’ FIU wasn’t faring much better. The Panthers got destroyed, 61-17, by a UCF that had gone just 6-7 in 2016, and they beat bad Alcorn State and Rice teams by just a touchdown each. North Texas was treading water, having lost by a combined 39 to SMU and Iowa and barely beaten a UAB start-up we assumed would be pretty bad in 2017. UTSA was the class of the league. Frank Wilson’s second Roadrunners squad had beaten Baylor and had beaten Southern U. and Texas State by at least 30 points each. Weather had prevented them from getting a shot at Houston in Week 1, but with the way both teams had played to that point, it was fair to think UTSA would have beaten the Cougars, too. The offense was good, the defense was great, and UTSA was a serious C-USA contender. Wilson had come to San Antonio with a reputation as one of the best recruiters, and he had honed his reputation by doubling the Roadrunners’ win total and taking them to their first bowl in 2016. And now UTSA was 3-0. Wilson’s stock as a future power-conference head coach was rising quickly. From September 30 onward, FAU won out, and FIU and UNT finished the regular season 13-2 against teams not named FAU. UTSA lost heartbreakers to Southern Miss (31-29) and North Texas (29-26) and only barely recovered. The defense hit a hiccup, and the offense hit a wall. And that win over Baylor looked less and less impressive as the Bears crashed to a 1-11 season. read more: https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2018/3/6/17072224/utsa-football-2018-preview-schedule-roster

  16. From the moment UTSA debuted its football program in 2011, even going back to when the school floated the idea of football in the mid-2000s, the buzz around the Roadrunners was that they were a mountain of potential. Mark 2016 as the year that potential began to become reality. UTSA went on to tie the record for the youngest program (sixth year) to make a bowl game, and now, with more than half their starters back, they are suddenly picked to finish second in the Conference USA West Division. The issue around the Roadrunners now shifts to how they can handle success. One immediate way is to focus on how the season ended, which was a narrow loss to New Mexico in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. read more: http://www.elpasotimes.com/story/sports/football/2017/08/16/utsa-deals-life-favorite/541731001/
