  1. Does anyone have any club tickets they are looking to sell for the UTEP game? I need somewhere between 2-6 tickets if at all possible.
  2. Does anyone have an extra club seat they aren't using for the last game? I'm actually going to go to the game, I tell you why in a PM why I want a club ticket.
  3. UTEP’s emergence as a contender in the Western Division of Conference USA is flying under the radar. Houston and SMU have received the headlines with head coaching hires this offseason, but the Miners are on the right track after Sean Kugler took over the program in 2013. The long-time offensive line coach has brought an attitude and toughness to a program that is visible on the field. “UTEP is a physical team now. Not that they were pushovers when we played them before Kugler got there, but the whole program has a different vibe. You know it’ll be a fight now with UTEP and he should get a lot of credit for that,” one CUSA defensive coordinator told me. “They’re going to run the ball and see if you can match that physicality. You’re going to leave that game feeling like you were in a fight.” Kugler and his team recorded its first winning season in nine years last season. The offense starts and stops with running back Aaron Jones. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound junior had over 1,200 yards as a sophomore and returns as one of the top candidates for first-team All-Conference honors this season after earning second-team honors a year ago. read more: http://texasfootball.com/highschool-news/view/181245
  4. Bishop was one of five recruits to visit El Paso this weekend and was hosted by UTEP's starting guard Derek Elmendorrf, he had an offer from North Texas and East Carolina, and was also named First Team All-District 6-3A a year ago with a First Team All-District Honor this season as well. http://www.minerrush.com/2015/1/18/7757977/utep-football-2015-ol-chance-bishop-commits-after-official-visit

  6. A few schools have a head start in that regard. UTEP and Rice have been playing annually since 1996 when they were in the WAC together and both jumped to C-USA in 2005. Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss have some history that will now be enhanced with Southern Miss moving to the Western Division, while Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee were geographic rivals in the Sun Belt who are now reunited in C-USA. As one of the nation's newest programs, the fourth year team at UTSA doesn't have much history on its side, but can develop some quickly. "I'll say it will be Rice, North Texas," Roadrunner offensive lineman Scott Inskeep said. "It's all still fairly new competition, but we can all sense it coming. There's going to be rivalries with all the Texas schools. We're still all getting to know each other." "Not everybody can jump on a plane and fly; our fans can drive to Houston," UTSA coach Larry Coker said. "North Texas could be a good rivalry for us." 7. EL PASO, Texas - UTEP has revealed the 2014 slogan for the football team: Make history. The slogan, along with several players, are featured in a picture that will be on the team's poster given to fans this year. In other football news, FOX Sports announced that five UTEP football games will be televised. The Miners' home opener versus Texas Tech (Sept. 6) will air at 9 p.m. Mountain time on FOX Sports 1. 8. The UTEP football team has traded what would have been a rare seventh home game against Colorado State for a Sept. 27, 2014 trip to Kansas State, athletic director Bob Stull said Wednesday. The Miners' non-conference schedule now includes home games with Texas Tech and New Mexico State with road games against New Mexico and Kansas State. The game against the Wildcats is a one-time game, as KSU is paying UTEP and won't owe the Miners a return trip to El Paso. 9. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/former-nfl-linebacker-thomas-howard-dies-in-car-crash-in-california-111713 Updated Nov 18, 2013 8:02 PM ET ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) Former NFL linebacker Thomas Howard died early Monday morning following a high-speed car crash on a freeway in Oakland. The Alameda County Coroner's office said the 30-year-old Howard was one of two men who died in the crash Monday. The driver of the other car, 64-year-old Zeng Long Liu of Hayward, also died in the crash. Howard was driving a speeding BMW when he hit a big rig, flipped over the center divider and went head-on into a Honda traveling on the other side around 1 a.m., said Officer Daniel Hill, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. Witnesses say the car was traveling at speeds between 100 mph to 110 mph as the car overturned, crossed a median and ended up in the southbound lanes of the freeway, where it sideswiped another car before landing on top of the Honda, Hill said. Hill said that alcohol is not being ruled out as a possible cause of the accident. Howard played eight years in the NFL after being drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round out of Texas-El Paso in 2006. He was most recently with Atlanta before getting released last week after playing two games this season. Howard played his first five seasons with the Raiders and two seasons with Cincinnati. "Words really can't describe how I'm feeling right now," former Raiders teammate Kirk Morrison wrote on his Instagram account. "To get that dreaded phone call and hear someone tell you that one of your best friends is no longer with us is hard to grasp. The feeling of shock and disbelief can be unbearable at times but all I can remember is all the good times that we had. ... I didn't lose a best friend or former teammate, I truly lost a brother today in Thomas Howard." Howard became an almost immediate starter when he joined the Raiders, making 62 starts in his first four seasons. His best season came in 2007 when he intercepted six passes and returned two of them for touchdowns. He also had one sack, 11 passes defensed and one fumble recovery that season. Howard left the Raiders as a free agent in 2011 and started 15 games in his first season with the Bengals. Howard tore his ACL after his first game in 2012 and missed the rest of the season. He signed with the Falcons in October and played two games with Atlanta before being cut. Howard's father, Thomas Sr., also played nine seasons in the NFL as a linebacker. "Thomas was an absolutely terrific guy, one of the best and nicest guys I have ever come across," said Howard's agent, Andrew Kessler. "He had two daughters. It is a horrible tragedy obviously for everyone involved. Really devastatingly sad in every way."

  12. COLLEGE STATION — For first-year UTEP head coach Sean Kugler, there were plenty of things that went wrong for the Miners in their 57-7 blowout loss to No. 12 Texas A&M on Saturday at Kyle Field. But the most disappointment came earlier this week when it became official that UTEP quarterback and former Shoemaker standout Jameill Showers would not lead the Miners (1-7) against the Aggies (7-2). “I’m pretty sure he was disappointed deep down, but he never showed it,” Kugler said. “I’m sure it was pretty emotional for him not to go out there and compete tonight, and to be honest with you, it hurts me knowing that kid didn’t get the opportunity because I felt bad for him.” The loss was UTEP’s third all-time to Texas A&M. The game was an anticipated one for Showers, who played in 11 games for Texas A&M before transferring to UTEP after Johnny Manziel solidified himself as the Aggie starter and became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012. Showers missed his return to College Station due to an injured right shoulder he sustained in a loss to Rice on Sept. 26. 13. "Really curious about the fan breakdown vs UNT. We owned SMU in football and basketball at games here in DFW (Don Haskins and Sun Bowl - East) - hope it's the same way againts UNT. Haven't been to a UNT game, but they have the 3rd largest enrollment in the state (behind only UT and A&M), but, don't think that translates to a rabid fan base for them, at least that's what my Brother-in-Law tells me who works at the University and has gone to some games........hopefully, this works in our favor." read more: http://utep.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=509&tid=192254682&mid=192254682&sid=991&style=2

  15. I wanted to get your ideas and feedback regarding a trophy or designation that would be given to the Texas C-USA school that has the most wins among Texas teams in the conference. This would include North Texas, Rice, UTSA, and UTEP. Since all four of these teams would be playing in football every year, it would make it fun to say the one who wins the most games against Texas schools would get some sort of trophy or bragging rights. It could most certainly be applied to other sports but football is king in this state. I'm not sure if this is being done anywhere else with this many teams but similar games that come to mind would be the Bayou Bucket game in Houston that pits Rice against the University of Houston every year for bragging rights in Texas or the SMU/TCU battle for the Iron Skillet game. These are just the first two that come to mind to me; there may be more in other states. We have four great cities in the great state of Texas who are in our conference and I could envision getting the mayors of each respective city and various businesses behind this. Perhaps a Texas media outlet could get involved...or even Dave Campbells... we have some real creative minds on here so let's hear what you got! How much fun could we have with this every year -- I think about a nice trophy sitting in Apogee that shows we were the best in Texas for that particular year. The Texas connection is a big part of what makes this conference special to us (we are tied with the Big 12 at 4 teams in the state now) and we need to emphasize it as much as possible. GMG!
  16. -Tulane's double-double monster Josh Davis, a possible favorite for C-USA Player of the Year, has transferred to San Diego State. -The poor Green Wave also lose guard Ricky Tarrant to Alabama. -East Carolina's starting forward Robert Sampson has decided to transfer to Georgia Tech. -Possibly the best guard in the conference, Marshall's DeAndre Kane is moving on to Iowa State, albeit not before writing a classy letter to the Herd fans in Huntington. -Rice's up-and-coming guard Julian DeBose is transferring to Cinderella phenom Florida Gulf Coast. These are the big ones, but Charlotte's Darion Clark is going to USC, Tulane's 3-point shooter Ben Cherry is transferring within the conference to Charlotte and losing two forwards in Marc Eddy Norelia to Florida Gulf Coast and Lotanna Nwogbo to Longwood, Marshall is also losing Jamir Hanner to Buffalo and Chris Martin to Mount St. Mary's, and FIU's Malik Smith is following his coach to Minnesota. In addition, FAU's Chris Bryant, UTEP's Twymond Howard, Malcolm Moore and Chris Washburn, UAB's Isiah Jones and Quincy Taylor, Tulsa's Zeldric King, ECU's Yasin Kolo, UTSA's Tank Mayberry, Charlotte's Victor Nickerson, Southern Miss's Christian Robbins, Marshall's D.D. Scarver, and Tulane's RaAnthony Sanders have all decided to transfer but have not chosen a school yet. There are some big names leaving Conference-USA. The rosters of Marshall and Tulane in particular look to be crippled by defections from graduation and transfers. Many Miner fans expressed disappointment with the departures of the hustling Malcolm Moore, the potential-filled Twymond Howard, and especially Chris Washburn, but compared to the losses some of their C-USA rivals, our Miners made out pretty well this offseason not losing a single starter. On the flip-side, here is a list of some of the players who will transfer into C-USA, all of whom will sit out a year before playing: - The UAB Blazers are getting a 6-5 guard from Virginia Tech, Robert Brown. - Louisiana Tech gets 6-7 forward Erik McCree from Murray State. - The Charlotte 49ers will have ex-Florida Gator Braxton Ogbueze and Clemson's Bernard Sullivan in a year. - North Texas gets George Mason guard Vertrail Vaughns. - East Carolina will have Florida State guard Terry Whisnant II. 17. Influential El Pasoans should push hard for UTEP's admittance into the Mountain West Conference. Sell UTEP -- plus El Paso --to conference members. UTEP officials either are not trying to move this city up in the collegiate athletics world, don't think they can compete favorably in the MWC, or have been told by the MWC to just buzz off. In any case, UTEP or the MWC would not be expected to comment if there's a push going on or not. These things are all behind-the-scenes stuff. There's no transparency, nor can there be. You don't announce which teams you've invited to join your league, and then name the schools you didn't choose. You don't embarrass people in that way. But since UTEP isn't saying anything, either way, one can wonder if the university is even trying. So, this push for MWC membership could be a job for our new mayor, County Judge Veronica Escobar and the city swells who make up the Paso del Norte Group. That's some oomph. Of course, UTEP President Diana Natalicio and Athletic Director Bob Stull would have to back the effort. We're making too many positive strides in this city not to have our school in a healthy athletic situation. The Miners are our "major league" franchise. They're our Dallas Cowboys, our New York Yankees, our LA Lakers. We're bringing in Triple-A baseball in 2014. We've approved construction of a new multi-use arena. Our Downtown is getting a good spiff-up. A fourth large mall is under way. Read more: http://www.elpasotimes.com/opinion/ci_22970734/joe-muench-city-bigwigs-should-push-utep-into
  18. n the midst of uncertain times around Conference USA, it has been widely rumored that the University of Texas at El Paso was making an attempt to leave the conference for the Mountain West. While that may or may not be the case, with more conference expansion news breaking today, UTEP may be stuck with no place to go. First, it has been reported by ESPN that, per sources, the Mountain West Conference will reinstate San Diego State University as a full member, possibly as early as Wednesday afternoon. The move comes only days after Boise State's decision to return to the conference. Assuming this is the case, the Mountain West will now have a total of 12 football members, and 11 overall, with Hawaii being the lone football only member. For UTEP, that's not a very good thing. In fact, it's likely the worst possible scenario for their hopes to make a move into the MWC. Read more: http://www.minerrush.com/2013/1/16/3883704/conference-expansion-utep-in-a-bad-spot
  19. Sean Kugler's staff has backgrounds from all corners of America, with all levels of experience, who all arrived in El Paso in different ways. The thread that binds the staff is Kugler himself, and so it was Wednesday when two more assistants were unveiled. Spencer Leftwich, a 25-year coaching veteran, whose son Mack was a top quarterback for North Allegheny High in the Pittsburgh area, and Kugler's first recruit to UTEP, will be the new offensive line coach. Kugler's son Robert was an all-state offensive lineman for North Allegheny, protecting Mack. The defensive line coach will be Andrew Browning, a 2006 graduate of Boise State, who was a star defensive tackle of the undefeated Bronco team Kugler coached on. read more: http://www.currentargus.com/carlsbad-sports/ci_22344936/2-new-assistant-coaches-offer-experience-youth
  20. Spencer Leftwich is leaving for “a position within the Division I coaching ranks,” according to a UA release. He is expected to join UTEP’s coaching staff. Leftwich is a Texas native; his son, Mack, is one of the Miners’ top incoming freshmen. Leftwich said in a release that he’s “so grateful and appreciative to Rich Rodriguez for giving me the opportunity to work with him and our staff at Arizona.” “This is an opportunity to get my whole family together that I couldn’t pass up,” he said. Leftwich coached in the Lone Star State from 1989-91, 1994-2002 and 2007-09. Leftwich joined the Arizona staff last fall from Pitt, where he worked alongside current UA aides Tony Dews, Tony Gibson and Calvin Magee. To replace Ragle, the UA promoted Billy Kirelawich to assistant director of operations. Kirelawich, the son of defensive line coach Bill Kirelawich, served in an administrative role this fall. 22. UTEP and Louisiana Tech were Western Athletic Conference rivals from 2001-04. We have also played Charlotte, Florida International and UTSA in basketball in recent years, so there’s some familiarity with those schools as well. While we are excited about all the new additions to C-USA, we are particularly thrilled that the league will maintain a footprint across the state of Texas. Our alumni in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio will still have the opportunity to watch our teams play, and it is important for recruiting that we have a presence in those areas. Conference USA and Mountain West presidents and chancellors announced earlier this year that the two leagues would be forming an alliance in 2013. There has been a lot of speculation about what form the alliance will take, with everything from a straight merger to a revenue-sharing model being discussed. The fact is, nothing has been determined to this point but conversations are still taking place. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out in the coming months. In the meantime, it’s clear that Conference USA is as strong as ever, and we’re excited about the future of UTEP Athletics. 23. Bump'd From the FanPosts- Conference Realignment isn't going anywhere and this is a nice perspective on why UTEP might be interested in the MWC. - AM Sorry I haven't been around as much, bitching about UT has taken up the majority of my time lately, couple that with the chaos in the Mountain West, and finals I haven't kept tabs over here. First let me be frank, the MWC's TV contract is HORRIBLE they must do something to change it to have a prayer at taking ANY Conference USA team. Second lets make some assumptions: 1st Hawaii and a non-football school (like Denver) join the Mountain West 2nd Utah St joins to keep the Mtn. on in Utah and the SLC market and adds excellent basketball 3rd another team WILL be added either from CUSA or the dieing WAC That leaves the Mountain West with only a few reasonable options because adding anyone (besides UTEP) in the state of Texas will only increase travel costs and have little market saturation. TCU has been great but people in Texas don't watch, and yes I blame some of that on the TV contract. Most MWC fans want UTEP, for their kick ass basketball, El Paso media market, history with WAC/MWC schools, great attendance numbers, and their improving football program. That leads me to why I think UTEP should join the Mountain West Conference. Read more: http://www.minerrush.com/2010/12/1/1850237/why-utep-should-join-the-mountain-west
