May 23, 2018 NASHVILLE – Junior quarterback Mason Fineheadlines a group of eight North Texas players named to Athlon Sports’ preseason all Conference USA teams. Fine was selected as the first team quarterback following his breakout season a year ago. The Peggs, Oklahoma, native set single-season program records in passing yards (4,052), passing touchdowns (31), completions (324) and pass attempts (511) on his way to C-USA Offensive Player of the Year honors. He had 17 touchdowns of 20-yards or more, six of which went for 50-plus yards. Four Mean Green players were selected to the second team, with wide receiver Jalen Guyton, tight end Kelvin Smith and Elex Woodworth doing so offensively and defensive lineman Roderick Youngrepresenting the defense. Guyton, last season’s C-USA co-Newcomer of the Year, hauled in 49 catches for 775 yards and a team-high nine touchdowns in 13 appearances in 2017. He averaged 15.8 yards per catch during his first season in Denton. Smith was versatile for North Texas in 2017, factoring heavily in both the passing and running games, while also featuring on several special teams units. He caught 27 passes for 264 yards last season. Woodworth started all 14 games for North Texas and appeared at guard and tackle at different points throughout the season. Young was a key disruptor along the defensive line, finishing with 48 total stops, 6.5 tackles for loss with a pair of sacks and eight quarterback hurries. Three more North Texas players were selected to the third team, with running back Nic Smith and center Sosaia Mose representing the offense and linebacker E.J. Ejiya doing so defensively. Smith carried 138 times for 684 yards and added eight total touchdowns in a backup role last year. Mose appeared in 13 games, making 11 starts for the Mean Green and was instrumental in paving the way for the Mean Green’s potent rushing attack. Ejiya was the team’s leading tackler with 109 total tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss and a team-best 7.0 sacks with a forced fumble. Athlon also projected the Mean Green to repeat as C-USA Western division champions in 2018. The Mean Green are anxious to show off their progress at Apogee Stadium. North Texas athletics has an exciting day in store for its fans Saturday, including the faculty and staff fun run and appreciation picnic at 9 a.m., followed by the Mean Green garage sale in Apogee Stadium’s west side concourse (VIP/season ticket holder access at 9:30) at 10:30 a.m., a pre-game tailgate presented by the game’s title sponsor (Verus Advisors) at the south end of Apogee Stadium and the Mean Green Spring Game at noon. Fans will get a close look at one of the nation’s most exciting offenses, led by junior quarterback Mason Fine. Four of the team’s five leading receivers from 2017 return, providing Fine with a plethora of weapons including Jalen Guyton, Michael Lawrence, Rico Bussey, Jr. and Jaelon Darden. North Texas also has a deep group of running backs, led by Nic Smith and Evan Johnson, while newcomers DeAndre Torrey and Loren Easly look to impress after strong performances throughout the spring. The running back group has big shoes to fill after Jeffery Wilson’s graduation, but a lot of talent remains in the North Texas backfield. Defensively the Mean Green have put in a great deal of work to improve on their performance in 2017. Redshirt freshman Tre Siggers made the transition from running back to safety, and is part of a group that includes returning starter Khairi Muhammad, redshirt junior Taylor Robinson and sophomore Makyle Sanders. Members of one of the most important positions in the secondary for Troy Reffett’s aggressive defense will have another opportunity to solidify their spots. The defensive line has a new look following the departure of Andy Flusche and Tillman Johnson, and a handful of new faces include a pair of junior college transfers on the outside in Darrian McMillan and Tuulau Saafi, as well as interior lineman Dayton LeBlanc. They, along with key returners LaDarius Hamilton, Roderick Young and Ulaiasi Tauaalo will be looking to test the North Texas offensive line Saturday. Chuck Langston’s group has continued to grow and improve this spring, but still has work to do ahead of the fall. The unit returns center Sosaia Mose, Elex Woodworth and Jordan Murray. Fans will also get their first look at junior college transfer Thomas Preston III, who has made a strong early impression. Several freshmen who redshirted last season have seen positive transitions in the weight room, including Jacob Brammer and Manase Mose. No one has jumped from North Texas to a power conference head coaching gig in nearly 40 years. With another strong year or two, Littrell will probably end that streak. You can win in Denton, but you probably won’t win for long there. When Darrell Dickey took over in 1998, it took him five years to produce a genuinely good team. He went to four straight New Orleans Bowls — the modern model for sustained success in Denton — but had already begun to slide. In his last two seasons, he went 5-18. After Dickey’s replacement, Texas high school legend Todd Dodge, crashed and burned (UNT went 8-40 in his four seasons), it was up to Dan McCarney to pick up the pieces. It took him only three years to surge to 9-4, but he couldn’t maintain the success, and in his last two seasons, UNT went 5-19. McCarney’s coaching career was basically over when he left Denton. Dodge was back in the high school ranks within a year or so of his departure. Dickey spent the last decade as a mid-major offensive coordinator or co-coordinator, which is what he was before UNT as well. You have to go back nearly four decades to find a time when someone went from North Texas head coach to something bigger. Jerry Moore went just 11-11 in 1979-80 but, combined with his success as a Tom Osborne assistant at Nebraska, managed to land the Texas Tech job in 1981. (He didn’t fare well there but, starting in 1989, became a coaching legend at Appalachian State.) Hayden Fry played things perfectly. Fired after a 7-4 season at SMU, Fry rehabilitated in Denton. He won 33 games from 1975-78 and got UNT to as high as 16th in the coaches’ poll during a brilliant 1977. He parlayed this into two decades as Iowa head coach. That Littrell took this job, then, was a bit of a risk. So the new UCLA jerseys were accidentally leaked by Under Armor, and this sparked my mind wondering when are we going to get that new uniform announcement. I know there has been talks especially from a recent post that there will be new uniforms for the upcoming season. I'm hoping it's sometime later this month, I know it's a great recruiting tool and as a student and fan I'm really looking forward to seeing what the Mean Green will don next!

DENTON - Friday was North Texas' 10th day of practice during its preseason camp and rain was once again a factor with morning and afternoon showers. Also making an appearance at Apogee Stadium ahead of his band's concert at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo in Denton Friday night was Texas country singer Josh Abbott. Friday was the Mean Green's third two-a-day session of the preseason. The wet weather created an opportunity for players to battle through the elements. Head coach Seth Littrell was pleased with his defense's work ethic on the field, which is beginning to become a theme of this fall camp. Following every practice, Littrell picks one player who impressed him that day to break the huddle. Friday, it was defensive tackle Roderick Young of Spring, Texas. Offensive Player of the Day: Running Back Anthony Wyche Wyche, a sophomore, stands at 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, but the LA Valley College transfer isn't afraid to take on tacklers. Friday, the Philadelphia native ran over all takers. In open space he used his speed to outrun several would-be tacklers. Defensive Player of the Day: Defensive Back Dee Baulkman Arizona Western College transfer Dee Baulkman had an interception midway through practice near midfield when he stepped in front of the intended receiver's short route. Officials have noted that this proposal would be two-fold — one part involving advertising and promotions and another a public-private partnership. UNT board documents have shown a multi-year agreement with the Cowboys could include letting UNT use the Dallas Cowboys star and other logos; present displays in “select event exhibit space;” place radio ads on game days; participate in television commercials; and put ads on the DallasCowboys.com website. IRVING, Texas – North Texas football in recent years has been a case of untapped potential. The school sits in Denton, Texas, part of the talent-rich Dallas-Fort Worth area. UNT also features a sparkling new facility in Apogee Stadium, which opened in 2011. Yet the Mean Green has posted just one winning season since 2005, a 9-4 campaign in 2013. The program has won three or less games seven times in that stretch, including a 1-11 season last year that included the October firing of Dan McCarney. North Texas tried to turn the page on that lackluster era this offseason with the hiring of Seth Littrell. The former North Carolina assistant head coach will begin his first season in charge of the Mean Green on Sept. 3 with a game against fellow DFW-Metroplex school SMU. UNT junior running back Jeffrey Wilson said Littrell and his staff have come in and breathed some life into the program. Littrell and his staff are “not letting us be mediocre, not letting us settle for less anymore,” Wilson told the Daily News last month at Conference USA Media Days. “Like I said, they’ve raised our standards to a whole other level and they expect us to meet those. 1). I was pleasantly surprised with the turnout. I was shocked to see the parking lots mostly full. We ended up having to park in the Victory lot. I do think there were some other events going on, perhaps a softball game etc that contributed to this. My point is they had the greek letters out, there was some limited tailgating and a pretty decent group walking up. It was a nice day, hot in the sun and many of the fans took to the upper level seats which remained in the shade. The Talons managed the canon very effectively and it was damn loud. Plenty of concessions open, no lines, no nazi attendants managing the aisles. Everything in terms of the game presentation was first rate. 2). I thought it was a fairly tough day for Morris at QB. He didn't seem to ever get a good rhythm. He stayed in the pocket a long time and had some issues when the option 1 receiver was covered up. I just felt like all of the QB's with the exception of Shanbour were taking way too long to get rid of the ball. Part of this is a byproduct of the fact they are wearing red jerseys and can't be hit. I think it really psychologically affects the play in scrimmages like this. Honestly, I would give Morris a C+ today. He clearly has the tools above and beyond every other QB we have. The defense today was surprisingly aggressive with multiple looks and blitzes and it definitely caused Morris to struggle at times. The good news is this is exactly what he will face against SMU and every team we play this season so it's a good thing to let him experience this and work on it in the offseason. 3). In terms of the other QB's I really though Shanbour had the best day of all of the QB's. He surprised me with his speed on a couple of keepers. His release is the fastest we have had at the position. He is small (listed at 6-0 probably 5-10) but good feet and has a nice zing to his ball. I really don't see Chumley and Means factoring in for us at this position. You need 4 QB's, and these guys have given their best but I do not see them being able to help us. Morris got the lionshare of the reps with Shanbour well behind him and frankly Means and Chumley received very few. I did not see them do much with the few they got. I think that Chumley needs to change positions, and perhaps Means as well, although Means may decide to go somewhere where he can play. I say that wanting the best for him because he is a great kid. I certainly would welcome him to stay if he wants to get his degree at UNT or could perhaps play another position. 4). I was struck at the overall lack of numbers we had on the field. Yes, I know we have 20+ coming in the Fall, but it just seems like this program is paper think at some key positions, namely QB. We need more QB's and fast. I can't help but think they are wooing a graduate transfer as I type this. If Morris doesn't work out, or gets injured, we have an adequate journeyman who sat out last season with an injury and has never played in a college game and that is about it. Still better than last season (ouch) but not at all where Littrell wants thing thing to be. 5). On the good side of things, I think our defensive secondary could be pretty good. McClain really stood out to me today. He looks like a man among boys. I also saw some real nice things from Ozougwu the lean defensive end who grey shirted. He needs more size and that will come in time, but he is extremely quick and was very hard to block. I also thought Muenster Monster Andy Flusche was very active and successful today. I loved the 3-3-5 and attack mentality of the defense. They had the offense on their heels all day long with blitzes from every direction. I also like the juco defensive end Joshua Wheeler. He seems like he could help us. Good size and speed. I also think Jareid Combs could provide an impact. 6). As much as I liked the overall defense, I think we are average at linebacker and d-line overall though. I ran into Booger Kennedy at the game and couldn't help but think, what name players do we have? There are no Boogers or Adrian Awasomes or Jonas Buckles or Craig Jones or Marcus Trice's or Zach Orr's... hopefully these will develop. Depth is a concern. I saw a fair amount of walk-ons at the linebacker spot today. Of course help is on the way. My hope is that our aggressive scheme will help us play up as we work to develop our players and bring in more talent. Final thought, I do not think that we will have to suffer through watching our defense die by a thousand cuts as it seemed in the last two years. We will be aggressive and take chances. 7). Field goal kicker Trevor Moore got a fair amount of work and he looks pretty solid. Not a huge leg but very consistent. He missed one barely but other than that I thought he looked very good. That could pay dividends in some close games this year. Sam Rice looks like he will be very solid at center although he did have a few high snaps. I really like the young lineman Elex Woodworth... he looks like a legit D-1 body and moves very well. I felt a little bad for big Jordan Murray who is behind Tech transfer Trey Kennan at tackle. But you can see why. Keenan is undersized at 270 but he is quick. The line has huge splits compared to the Mac days when they were shoulder to shoulder. Keenan is quicker off the ball and moves his feet faster once he connects with a defender. These are things big Jordie can work on and he's still so very young. 8). #27 WR Derris Praeter is a walk on but may have a little something. Tee Goree made some nice plays and seems to be excelling in this system. We are not near deep enough at running back, but I did like what I saw out of Southlake's AJ Ezzard. He has good speed and determination with the ball. My favorite receiver of the day was freshman tight end Kelvin Smith as he was a favorite target of Morris. I really shouldn't call him a tight end as he lines up more like an H-back or split out. He just seems to have that "it". He wants the ball and he seems to step up his game when the lights are on. A very nice pickup. 9). Littrell's coaching style is interesting. He really delegates all of the direct interaction with the players through his assistants. For instance, at the start of the scrimmage, it was Graham Harrell out in the circle of players in the middle of the field barking out instructions and firing everyone up. Littrell would stand directly behind the defense, with his eyes directly at the center of the line. It seems like he is allowing his assistants to develop a relationship with their players out of respect for their abilities and is constantly assessing things in a Macro way. In a weird way, he sort of reminds me of Tom Landry... very stoic, analytical and focused. He stands and soaks it in. The main movement and interaction he had would be at 4th downs when he would let the officials and coaches know where he wanted the ball and whether he wante dthe 1st or 2nd teams in. You don't see the Mac pacing up and down the field. He doesn't do the Dickey whistle spin. He doesn't do the Dodge arm band and hand signals. He doesn't scream out things or say a whole lot. The positive effect is that when he does speak it gets noticed. I did see him low five a player after a good play once. Perhaps this will change in time, but these were my impressions from today. 10). Interesting note, there was a mix tape of just about every kind of music you could think of... I mean I heard a lot of Rap, Van Halen, Pop... country.. anyway it seems to be a LIttrell trademark, because the music played through the entire scrimmage over the stadium loud speakers. I had seen that at the practices as well, but I found it interesting to have the announcer announcing over this steady steam of music. It wasn't too loud though. Actually I think I like it. It sort of gives a rhythm to a somewhat monotonous stop and start scrimmage. I also saw a fair amount of recruits and high school coaches at the game which is a positive thing. Overall a fun day. gmg

Good day, great weather... here are some brief thoughts: - Wow #5 Alec Morris the quarterback impressed the hell out of me. Powerful arm, great touch on the ball... he's the QB we always wanted but never had. Looks like a leader. He's got great size. I like how he wears the lineman,manly-type shoulder pads as opposed to the Garo Yerpremian ones Mini wore. Guy has an attitude and he seemed to be having a lot of fun out there today. - It's interesting to see Littrell (wearing a grey shirt and whistle) and Harrell work together with the offense. It's a very rhythmical thing - they have music of all types (Rap, county etc) going on loudly in the background and things seems to be moving and going constantly, I only saw Littrell go off once, there are not the huge Chico or Mac blowups, no Simmonds screaming. I did not hear Tommy's scratchy voice during special teams section. Much of a lower tone but intense. - -There were some amazing throws and amazing receptions today. Morris had the best throws but I though Shanbour had a couple and even Chumley made a couple nice plays. Morris gets double of the reps of the other guys. Unfortunately, Means struggled. He had one really bad long duck that they pulled him out on. He just doesn't seem to have progressed and his arm pales in comparison to Morris. Tee Goree looked taller to me. He was playing a lot with the 1's. -- Not as much contact as other regimes. In the scrimmage they hit hard but I didn't see the Oklahoma type drills as much. Of course this was one day. All the QB's are wearing red shirts and can't be hit. -- I wish they would put a red shirt on Jeffery Wilson because he REALLY looks good right now. He had a long TD run around the end where there was not anyone who could catch him. - Ekelor is very active and loud. I was surprised, he's actually a little shorter than Littrell but sort of looks like Littrell out there. He was working on a lot of technique items with the linebackers. I liked what Courtney Finney and Braelon Schwartz did today. - Nate Brooks made some nice plays on the receivers and Ashton Preston did as well. - We have a lot more tall athletic receivers than we have probably ever had. - Willie Ivery had an amazing over the shoulder long touchdown catch perfectly placed by Morris that had the entire coaching staff congratulating him. There were more catches than drops and better routes and passing than I saw at many Mac practices. Just seems like this staff is letting the receivers play. All the coaching seems to be technique based as opposed to scheme or plays. Everything play wise seems simple and fluid. EVERYTHING is shotgun btw. - Lines still look small to me, especially d-line. I like the look of Wegeman. I could see him step in for Austin Orr this season. Jareid Combs made a few nice plays. - Tight end is a work in progress. I like the look and attitude of Dillman. I didn't catch much of Kelvin. Just seem young and low numbers there as opposed to recent years. Then again, will he use a tight end. Seemed to me he was focused more on h-back and fullback today. - There is a fullback that Littrell seems to like. I think his name is Cameron Maki. I saw him spending a lot of time with him and coaching him etc. Good looking athlete. Final thought --- really need to keep Morris healthy. He elevates the program to a higher level on his ability alone. After him there is a pretty steep drop off although I think Shanbour won't kill us... it's still an issue to the point of, I am not sure I would let him run too much for fear of having him injured. He is a senior DT right now but with a much higher ceiling because of his accuracy. Second thought -- this team has some decent players. Mac did not leave the cupboard completely empty, It's still too small and way too thin on the defensive line however. I think the skill positions are very competitive for C-USA. The QB position is a HUGE upgrade with Morris however and that is a good reason to be excited about this season. GMG EDIT -- I forgot that #11 Thadeous Thompson had a nice long grab that was close to Ivery's in terms of positive response from the coaching staff. He's a another guy that is impressive in pads and seems to have good speed.

Shane Elder to North Texas Football Scoop It appears that Littrell has a new member of the football staff in an "off the field" role (Football Operations) , in Shane Elder formerly of UTSA and Texas A&M football programs. Looks like an excellent candidate in an ever-important role.

Took a few pics this afternoon when Coach Seth Littrell came and met us in the new Union. Mr. and Mrs. Littrell laughing, having a good time! You can tell he doesn't like being talked about that much. I think he's a "Down to business" dude. Quality of this one is not nearly as good, but that's because it's a phone pic. I got to meet the dude. Coach Littrell is a really cool guy. I think fans are going to love him!

Are we one of those schools where you can't at consistently win ? I mean, do more than have a winning season once in a blue moon.Akron,FIU,Kansas,HAWAII,UTEP,all the directional Michigan schools, both New Mexico schools,UNLV,Wyoming,Vanderbilt, and quite a few others come to mind. Are we one of those football programs that are bottom feeders, because it sure looks like it.I never thought than in 52 years of following Eagle football that we would be ranked dead ass last in the polls.[128th out of 128].Todd Dodge was over his head as a college head coach, but he recruited enough talent for us to win a bowl game. Since then its been a downward spiral. In golf its called L.O.F.T. [lack of frigging talent], which in my opinion resonates both on and off the field.I really feel sorry for the poor SOB who has to follow in Coach Mac's footsteps. But back to my original question: are we one of those?

The 2015 version of UNT’s Spring Game did not offer any major surprises. The chance for that set sail when it was announced talented junior college transfer quarterback DaMarcus Smith would not be eligible to participate in Spring Ball due to academics. There was however some interesting footnotes which are worth mentioning. I will preface this by restating a recurrent theme of my close to 20-years of following UNT football. In the bigger scheme of things, the Spring game doesn’t matter that much. Sure, it matters to the team and certainly the players who are vying for playing time at their respective positions. But it’s one day out of 20+, which is a small subset of the total evaluation. Too often, players who make the biggest impact in the game end up not returning in the Fall or drop back down the depth chart once a bevy of scholarship and preferred walk-ons enter the picture in late August [see Erick Evans last year who barely played on Saturday]. Junior college guys who just arrived are still learning the plays and the schemes. Injuries keep some of the better players off of the field [Tillman Johnson]. With that disclaimer out of the way, it is still exciting to be in beautiful Apogee stadium one last time before the dreaded UNT 5-month off hibernation period begins. The weather Saturday was nice, almost too nice as the 1st half of the game got pretty hot. I saw some older fans leave prior to 2nd quarter due to the heat. Cloud cover saved the day at around half time and by the second half things started cooling off and actually perfect game day weather as the sun set in the west. Last year, CUSA posted the league schedule on Feb. 3. I realize that there's no way to actually know yet which date will be the open date, but with the doldrums between the end of bowl season and signing date, I thought it might be a useful exercise to see if anyone can correctly guess which weekend will be our BYE in 2015. Winner gets a free 2014 souvenir cup, slightly used. Sept. 5 Sept. 12 @ SMU Sept. 19 Sept. 26 @ Iowa Oct. 3 Oct. 10 Portland State Oct. 17 Oct. 24 Oct. 31 Nov. 7 Nov. 14 @ Tennessee Nov. 21 Nov. 28 Dec. 5 CUSA Championship Game 9 Open Dates, 8 games. Guaranteed games with Rice, UTSA, UTEP, LA Tech, Southern Miss. The remaining three will be from the pool of MUTS, F_U twins, Charlotte, Old Dominion, Marshall, WKU. My personal top three contenders for open date winner are Oct. 3, Oct. 17, and Sept. 5. Disclaimer: I love college football in October (especially home games), so I don't really want an open date on either of the first two, but that tends to be the time frame where opening dates occur. Also, I absolutely do NOT want to be sitting at home with no game on the first weekend of the season, but being a tried and true "that's just our luck" Mean Greener, I could certainly envision a scenario where it happens to us. Any takers?
