Charlotte 49ers Preview 2022 The 49ers are still trying to find the consistency needed to be a bigger factor in Conference USA. The breakthrough bowl season in 2019 was fun, the 2-4 season in 2020 was because of 2020 – there weren’t any bad losses among the four – and last year a bowl game was well within each, but the defense went bye-bye over a three game losing streak to close out the year. The experience is there to be better after a decent season, but it’ll be all about the improvement on the other side of the ball. The new-look Conference USA schedule just got a lot easier, but it’s still going to be a fight to get close to six wins if the D isn’t far, far better. Seth Littrell, who for the past two seasons has been the offensive coordinator at North Carolina, will be the new head coach at North Texas, according to an ESPN report on Saturday. If Littrell leaves UNC, he would do so after he helped lead the Tar Heels to one of the most prolific offensive seasons in school history. The Tar Heels enter the ACC Championship game on Saturday night against Clemson averaging 495.7 yards per game, which ranks 16th nationally. UNC averages 7.46 yards per play, which is second nationally. The Tar Heels' offense has been particularly explosive this season, too, which is something I wrote about here. The timing of this news isn't ideal for the Tar Heels, who will play one of the most important games in school history on Saturday night. Even so, there had been rumblings for the past week or so that Littrell was among North Texas' leading candidates. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Conference USA freshman of the year Torin Dorn is headed to North Carolina State. Dorn spent last season at Charlotte and was the 49ers' leading scorer, but decided to transfer after a coaching change. Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder was in a peculiar situation just four years ago with a BCS title-winning coach sitting in his office. Forget the fact that he was still piecing together his plans for his football program, which at the time was just a year old, because he was more worried about the man in front of him — Larry Coker. Coker, who at the time was nine years removed from winning a national championship at Miami, was in Wilder’s office in Norfolk, Virginia for some advice on how to start a football program. A year earlier, Wilder and Old Dominion put the wheels in motion on the school’s new program, and Coker was looking to do the same at Texas-San Antonio. Old Dominion has canceled a 2014 football game at UNC Charlotte, one of its future rivals in Conference USA, in an effort to strengthen its schedule, officials said on Tuesday. ODU is scheduled to host Charlotte on Nov. 16 in its final home game this season. ODU had been scheduled to play a return game in Charlotte on Oct. 25, 2014. However, ODU exercised a cancellation clause in the contract on Monday and must pay Charlotte $60,000, said ODU senior associate athletic director Bruce Stewart, who handles football scheduling for ODU. Stewart said when the two-game series was signed, both programs were slated to be in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2014.
