  1. While Brent Venables is the top name on many K-State fans’ wish lists, North Texas coach Seth Littrell has arguably been the most rumored replacement for Bill Snyder Why Seth Littrell? Littrell is one of the hottest names among mid-major coaches right now. He’s been mentioned either seriously or in passing for every open head coaching job this offseason. As Bill Connelly wrote in his North Texas preview before this season: But why is he so coveted? Littrell inherited the North Texas coaching job from former Iowa State coach Dan McCarney. McCarney had led the oft-hapless Mean Green to nine wins in his third season in 2013, but managed to win only four of his next 17 games and found himself unemployed after registering an 0-5 start in 2015. The Mean Green finished 1-11 that season, but Littrell spun the culture around, winning five games in 2016 and nine in 2017. He led them to nine wins again this year, and may have 10 if he stays on and beats Utah State in the New Mexico Bowl. So he’s a winner, and he’s also young. At 40, Littrell is one of the youngest coaches listed among likely Snyder replacements. read more: https://www.bringonthecats.com/?_gl=1*n7r7xn*
  2. Many thought something would be announced by Wednesday, when Taylor said he hoped to meet with Snyder and discuss his future. Instead, fans are still nervously checking their phones for updates. Taylor did not return a message seeking comment for this story, and the only statements Snyder has made have been one-liners to reporters camped outside K-State’s football complex. The waiting game has gone on long enough that one news outlet inadvertently posted a pre-written story announcing Snyder’s retirement and quickly took it down. And for North Texas athletic director Wren Baker to take to Twitter and calm fans about the rising speculation that Mean Green coach Seth Litrell is a potential candidate to replace Snyder, if he retires. How did we get here? There are a few explanations. read more: https://www.kansas.com/sports/college/big-12/kansas-state/article222501925.html Read more here: https://www.kansas.com/sports/college/big-12/kansas-state/article222501925.html#storylink=cpy

  6. If only Kansas State could play Miami every week. Just a week removed from scoring at will in the rout over the Hurricanes, offense suddenly became difficult for the Wildcats on Saturday, needing just about every break to come away with a 35-21 victory over North Texas at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. "If you don't prepare yourself well, about anything can happen," K-State coach Bill Snyder said. "And we weren't prepared well…There probably isn't anything we don't need vast improvement on — and that's on both sides of the ball." The 15th-ranked Wildcats improved to 3-0 to close out nonconference play, but the win didn't come easy against a pesky Mean Green team playing on the road against its second top-15 opponent in three weeks. "That's why you play the game," K-State quarterback Collin Klein said. "Everybody can beat you. Hats off to (North Texas) — they're a tough team. They're going to do some good things…We would have liked to execute a little better, but we got it done." K-STATE 35, N. 7. I was going to post some thoughts on UNT’s loss to Kansas State last night, but stayed in the one hotel left on the planet without wireless. UNT really did turn out a remarkable performance. The Mean Green hung with one of the top teams in the country until the Wildcats superior talent took over. UNT’s offensive line is everything it was billed to be heading into the season. The Mean Green’s top two running backs — Brandin Byrd and Antoinne Jimmerson — picked up 129 yards between them. Derek Thompson had his best night throwing the ball since last season, connecting on a remarkable 25 of his 28 attempts for 208 yards and a touchdown. 8. 9/16/2012 By ARNE GREEN Salina Journal MANHATTAN - The lights were on, but Bill Snyder had a sinking feeling nobody was home. Whether his Kansas State Wildcats were gazing south toward Norman, Okla., or simply looking past North Texas, the signs were ominous. "I hated playing this one at night because it's been on my mind very definitely for a long time and certainly was all during the course of the day," Snyder said after the No. 15-ranked Wildcats stuttered and sputtered for more than a half Saturday before pulling away to a 35-21 victory at sold-out Snyder Family Stadium. "I never try to predict those things, but it wasn't hard to see it coming. "If you don't prepare yourself well, most anything can happen. We weren't very well prepared." Though the Wildcats (3-0) swore North Texas had their full attention, next week's Big 12 opener at No. 5 Oklahoma clearly cast a long shadow. "These games are hard to prepare for," defensive end Ryan Mueller said. "It's sometimes hard taking teams that aren't conference teams seriously, but we know that these types of games are usually dogfights." North Texas definitely took the fight to K-State early, scoring first and holding the Wildcats to minus-1 yard in the first quarter. But Tyler Lockett kept it from being a complete disaster. 9. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - North Texas almost beat No. 15 Kansas State at its own game Saturday night. Using a ball-control offense devised by former Iowa State coach Dan McCarney - no stranger to matching wits with Kansas State's Bill Snyder - the Mean Green managed to keep Collin Klein, John Hubert and the rest of the Wildcats' potent offense standing on the sideline most of the night. It wasn't until Klein and Hubert scored on late touchdown runs that Kansas State finally squeezed out a 35-21 victory Saturday night. "It goes right back to your offensive line,'' McCarney said. "If you can sustain blocks and sustain some drives, you've got a chance to do that against a really outstanding Kansas State team, but in the end we just did not make enough plays. "You get into a game with Kansas State, and you don't want many three-and-outs,'' McCarney said. "We had a couple, three of those in the second half, gave that offense another chance to put a drive together and go score points.'' The Mean Green nevertheless held their Big 12 opponent to 143 yards rushing - Kansas State entered the game sixth nationally at better than 300 yards per game - while holding the ball an astonishing 37 minutes, 4 seconds, which prevented the Wildcats from getting into a rhythm. "They made more plays,'' McCarney said. "They made more big plays in the second half. That was the difference in the game.'' 10. I'm just an alum and fan -- but I felt something tonight that I haven't felt in the entire time I have been following this program which dates back to 1988.... You can't expect to go into a hostile environment like #15 K-State and expect to be able to make mistakes or get any calls in your favor. That said, I can honestly say after tonight - I feel better than I have since I can possibly remember (including 2002 when QB Andrew Smith was alive and we had won a bowl game against Cincy). We performed well against the #15 team in the country tonight. In fact, I would argue we won the line of scrimmage against them. There were two reviewed calls that I knew would end up against us -- you can't expect that to happen on the road on a paycheck game against a Big 12 team and Big 12 refs. We are missing a few key pieces -- however, this team is so different from what we have become accustomed to. I applaud Coach Mac for building something special here. I applaud the players for an outstanding effort against. If you are a North Texas fan you have to be thrilled about the change that is so apparent in this program right now. If there is one clear message from the game tonight it is that Coach Mac knows how to build a program. I shudder to think what this team will look like in just a couple of years. The change is now clearly been displayed on a national television broadcast cause believe me the OU fans and even the UT fans were watching this game to scout K-State If you are not on it now - -- you better get on the band wagon soon because it will be very full before the end of this season. The future is very VERY bright for this Mean Green football program!!! GMG! This post has been promoted to an article
  11. Kansas State, ranked No. 15 in the nation, isn't taking the Mean Green of North Texas lightly, even with a showdown with 5th-ranked Oklahoma on deck. How could they? Wildcats coach Bill Snyder has his fingerprints all over the program. He coached under Hayden Fry at North Texas from 1976-78, and got his first win with K-State (and his career) over the Mean Green in 1982. Then there's the last meeting between the teams in 2010. The Wildcats won a wild 49-41 decision in Denton, Texas. K-State (3-0) will host North Texas (2-1) at 6 p.m. CT Saturday and are 28.5 point favorites. While Louisiana-Monroe proved no team can be overlooked, it would be a massive upset for the Mean Green to walk out of Manhattan with a win. The game is on FSN locally. 12. “Coach Fry did such a good job of unifying the staff and keeping us humble, we were always on edge and I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way at all,” McCarney said. “It was an around-the-clock job, and you never felt like the work was quite done. “Bill was immensely organized and he had such a tremendous attention to detail. In the 10 years we spent coaching together, every last night Bill was the last one out of the office. He was always looking for another idea that might help us win, and he never lost that work ethic. That’s why he’ll be remembered as one of the best to ever coach the game … how could you not remember somebody like that?” McCarney faces a rebuilding project at North Texas, where he went 5-7 in his first season. But he has $78 million Apogee Stadium, which opened in 2011, and a move to Conference USA in 2013 to aid his cause. “I think it was just a terrific hire by North Texas,” Snyder said. “The time we spent together, I got to know him really well. He’s a good guy, a good coach who comes from a good family.” A good guy and a good coach who might be in for a rough day when he brings his 1-1 team into Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 50,000. “I’ve told my players they’re getting ready to go into one of the great atmospheres in college football, which makes it one of the worst places to go and play,” McCarney said. “That’s the truth. I don’t need to recruit for Bill, that’s just the facts. “But isn’t that what you want as a player and as a coach? To go and play against the best?” Reach Tony Adame at 316-268-6284 or tadame@wichitaeagle.com. 13. North Texas hits the road again today in the face of long odds against a Kansas State team that, in the estimation of Mean Green coach Dan McCarney, is better than its ranking as the 15th best team in the nation. To compete -- and better yet prepare for a Sun Belt Conference schedule that begins next week -- the coach said, the Mean Green (1-1) will need to match the defensive intensity it displayed in a home-opening victory last week against Texas Southern and find a balance on offense that has remained elusive through the first two weeks of the season. While North Texas running backs Brandin Byrd and Antoinne Jimmerson -- behind an offensive line that has yet to give up a sack this season -- have provided steady production with an average of almost 170 yards a game, the passing game has been inconsistent. Quarterback Derek Thompson has completed only 42 percent of his passes for 288 yards. "We need to keep people guessing on first down," said McCarney, adding that he has full confidence in Thompson, a senior, even after his quarterback just "had one of those days" last week when he misfired on throws that he has consistently completed. "We know we can fix it. And we must going against this defense this week." Read more here: http://www.star-telegram.com/2012/09/14/4260385/north-texas-offense-has-to-keep.html#storylink=cpy
  14. Kansas State last played North Texas on Nov. 27, 2010 – the final game at Fouts Field in Denton before the Mean Green moved across the interstate to $78 million Apogee Stadium. Here’s Kellis Robinett’s article from the Wildcats’ 49-41 shootout victory, a game notable for Daniel Thomas running for 269 yards and two touchdowns. Several current Wildcats played key roles in that game – safety Ty Zimmerman had one interception, wide receiver Chris Harper scored a touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Carson Coffman and Anthony Cantele handled all seven kickoffs for K-State. Collin Klein had five carries for 31 yards in the win, but Coffman got most of the snaps that day. North Texas played that game under interim coach Mike Canales but also at the same time several media outlets began to report the Mean Green had hired then-Florida assistant Dan McCarney. The school introduced McCarney as the new coach three days later . 15. It’s a simple case of cause-and-effect for North Texas quarterback Derek Thompson once he enters Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday. If he can’t show he can throw the ball effectively against No. 15 Kansas State, the Wildcats will, undoubtedly, stack the box on defense. And that could mean trouble for the Mean Green, already four-touchdown underdogs. “I know (Kansas State defensive coordinator) Tom Hayes,” North Texas coach Dan McCarney said. “And he’ll be grinning out the side of his mouth if he sees our passing game isn’t working.” Through two games, the Mean Green’s passing attack has indeed struggled. Thompson, a 6-foot-4, 226-pound junior, was eight of 21 passing for 143 yards and one interception in a season-opening loss to LSU, and 11 of 24 with 145 yards and one interception in a 34-7 win over Texas Southern last Saturday. He threw for 1,759 yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2011, his first year as full-time starter. “(Thompson) has just misfired on some throws he usually makes,” McCarney said. “We don’t have draft picks all over the place on the offensive side of the ball, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be successful. Our first two games left a lot to be desired.” Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/2012/09/12/3812151/north-texas-knows-it-must-pass.html#storylink=cpy'>http://www.kansascity.com/2012/09/12/3812151/north-texas-knows-it-must-pass.html#storylink=cpy Read more: http://www.kansascity.com/2012/09/12/3812151/north-texas-knows-it-must-pass.html Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/2012/09/12/3812151/north-texas-knows-it-must-pass.html#storylink=cpy'>http://www.kansascity.com/2012/09/12/3812151/north-texas-knows-it-must-pass.html#storylink=cpy
