  1. I believe star ratings are a good standard. I believe offers are a better indicator and I understand that the two go hand in hand. I also believe that if you have a coach that believes in a recruit he must have a reason. If that reason is he is stupid, owes a favor to another coach, player or friend or he just wants to fill a roster, well that's not good and that coaches integrity should be questioned.
  2. I wanted to comment on the obsession with star ratings. I just read a thread where some posters were pretty harsh on a kid because of his star rating while others are content with the fact that UNT just can't get 3 and 4 star recruits. It's impossible to argue that a 4 or 5 star athlete is not a good pick up but it's also a fact that a kid can be a stud and never even get his name on rivals or 247 let alone get any stars by his name. Most people don't even know how these players get rated. If a kid plays for a small school. If his parents can't send them to camps or combines then they might fly right under the radar. You've got kids in 2a or 3a playing iron man football both ways in one stoplight towns all over the state. The difference is in coaching/recruiting. I know two players talking to Baylor and TCU weekly. One is a RB the other a QB. Neither is star rated. In both cases the Coach wants their speed and athleticism not to play those positions and not for stars next to their name. How did they find them? At a track meet. Do you think TCU or Baylor coaches don't know what they are doing? The days of coaches beating the bushes for talent is just about gone. We live in a Hudl world gone mad where a kid with six pack abs a speed ladder video and a huge vertical jump can find himself the talk of Twitter. A Coaches ability to size up a prospect for his teams needs far out weighs anyone else's opinion. Houston had DBs at running back and a receiver at QB because their abilities were bigger than their position. A real Coach sometimes sees something in a player a fan can not. Just because previous coaches sucked at sizing these players up doesn't mean Littrell's staff can't until proven otherwise. Until UNT has a better track record a few no stars sprinkled in might be a sign of real recruiting effort not the same old same old. JMHO
  3. Thanks for the input. Kirbyville has traditionally been a run first, run fast, run often team but Devin keeps the defense honest as deep pass threat. Raw but with some hard work and coaching I think he will do well.
  4. Buna has about 8 rows and they film from the top, no track and light poles at the 30s and 50 yard line.
  5. "how close the film is to due the stands". Heck he was on a bucket all the way on the top row! That's almost 20'!
  6. He's never played defense but will his senior year due to a lack of players. We only have about 23 kids total. We will see!
  7. He's working with a trainer now. Skipping basketball to concentrate on football. Goal is a lean 210# but keep that 4.5 or better. Here's the crazy thing. He loves UNT. Met Mac at the Friday Night lights camp last year and was impressed with what he had to say. Loves the campus. He did an unofficial visit to NT this season but with all the coaches changing who knows. He's recieved letters since his sophomore year from a few schools but I'd love to see him in green! He'll earn a spot somewhere. It's hard for me to see him without my homer glasses. Lol
  8. I apologize if there was a better place to post this. Since there are plenty of people on here with experience evaluating HS talent I was hoping to get a few opinions on this young man. No he's not my kid. Just from my area. He's only a junior. 6'3 190#. Should be a handful by the end of next season. Thanks in advance. 9. My daughter said the y were all over campus this morning. Trying to copy the pick but it says the file is too large.
  10. I know a top HS player that will be playing D1 football somewhere in 2 years. He did not know much about UNT so he quietly took a campus tour this summer and then went to a camp there. He loved the facilities, the stadium and the words of Mac. He told me he was interested in playing there because of the focus on academics and the fact that he might have a better chance of starting sooner there than a bigger program. Then the big loses started piling, when I tried to talk about UNT he did not say much. I saw him today and he said with a new coach and hopefully a new offensive scheme he'd like to make a go of it at UNT. I'm not saying this kid would make a difference or save the day. I am just saying that it's not complicated to recruit a really good High School player. A chance to start sooner A chance to make a difference Great facilities Great academics Sell him that or see him on tv in a few years knowing that he could have been wearing green instead of red. These kids have been play makers since pee wee. They don't want to sit the bench. You can have a football team or a football program. Get a Coach that recruits he will win. Win and the seats will be filled.
  11. If you were put in charge of this team tonight what would you do to make a positive impact? If I was making the call I would envoke the KISS rule. Keep It Simple Stupid! 1. Let it be known that you have your scape goat. His head has rolled. Blame the past on him he is dead to us anyway. The future is in your hands. 2. Just because you were a starter does not mean you are a starter! All positions are up for compition. 3. Announce that D1 scholarships are for D1 players only. No one gets a free ride. Everyone is up for review. 4. Chop the play book to a bare minimum. Football is about execution. Run the plays you have correctly. No sense in running variations of more than 10 plays horribly. 5. The linemen have to step up but a QB has to be able to move around, extend plays AND throw the ball downfield more than 10 yards. With zero threat of the QB running it's too easy to shut UNT down. Portlands QB was no beast but he sure knew when to tuck it and run! 6. Take joy in the small victories! Every score, every forced punt, every tackle for a loss, every mean green first down. As long as they're fighting for it cheer like it's a bowl game win!
  12. After the SMU game I asked my daughter, who has been on the sidelines since peewee ball what the team looked like. She said. "They don't protect the football." " They don't pass down field to help the running game." "He ran up the middle play after play and it was not working" and "The defense was on the field so much they got too gassed." I love that girl.
