  1. Yeah, I kind of nodded in agreement at that. I still can't get over that play that you and @MGNation92 have in y'all's signature. It was literally an unbelievable play that did not at the time and has not even now received enough regional or national recognition. It's an absolute STUD play by both QB and QR, especially QB. I mean Fine laid that ball in literally a "spot" on a random mark on the field and it was an absolute perfect throw by just repetition and memory. I don't think that play in its given time will be out done by Fine. I hope it is, but I have a feeling this play will lay down in UNT football lore, regardless of opponent. To Note: I had walked up to from my seats on row 1 section 112 to the middle rail section between the end zone and wing seating. As we were walking up UNT were eating TO's with UTSA's O on the field and it got to 4th and 3, I believe, with a little over a minute left and we called our last TO. I told my wife, the beautiful @Lydia Gooding, that I had to watch what happens. So she agreed to hold up with me there...Then the punt went down to the 2 yard line and I was like WTH. But, hey hun, let's see what happens. And then we hit that big heave to Lawrence on the field boundary. Then magic happened. I was giving high fives AND hugs to people I have never seen in my life. It was, regardless of the shitty opponent, the best UNT experience I have experienced thus. PS; The Army game and Rice 2013 game were great as well. My wife's favorite moment to date has been the win over Army in 2017, because according to her, their fans were "A-holes".

  3. I'll let you guys read without giving anything away but they certainly do a good job highlighting much of the intrigue of the coming season for our conference... https://athlonsports.com/college-football/conference-usa-football-2018-predictions Clearly, we know where the publication stands on it's view of our QB situation: https://athlonsports.com/college-football/college-football-starting-quarterback-rankings-2018 For comparison's sake, here's their 2017 article predicting a 5-7 finish for the Mean Green (of course, few projected the 2017 season correctly for our squad in Denton)... https://athlonsports.com/college-football/conference-usa-football-2017-predictions

  4. If FAU's accomplishments are honorably gained, it is a positive for the conference. Any conference member's success shines a favorable light on all of us and ultimately makes us better. I just want the Mean Green to be that leader and I think we are headed in that direction. Beat SMU.

  10. OL and defense must improve. Year 3 in the system and here's where these so called "Amazing evaluation skills" start to rear their head. I like our interior line, I am extremely skeptical about our tackle situation. Woody is our best lineman, but can he make the transition to tackle? Is the NCAA going to screw us on Mayfield? Can Brammer step up? If we don't get more consistent pressure from the front 6/7, we will lose those close games we won last year. These two units are the difference between 7-5 and 10-2

  18. With what we have coming back, in their 3rd year in the system, with the schedule... * I expect to average over 40 per game this year * I expect to beat SMU * I expect to at the every least....make Arkansas really sweat *I expect to play MUCH better against FAU at home and be in position to win that game (I think they'll take a step back this year...they have EXTREMELY unproven coordinators...Briles is legit) * I expect to win the West * I expect to be a top 10 G5 team If we're 8-4 this year, I'll be disappointed. I don't care how we're doing compared to "do you realize how this program has played the past 20 years?" That has nothing to do with my expectations for this coaching staff and this group of players in 2018. CUSA offensive player of the year returning at QB with all of his receivers, another year of the oline gelling and the 3rd year in this system. 10-2 or 11-1 is not crazy for this team.

  23. Arkansas this year. PS Houston is not a signature win.

  24. Incarnate Word won't be competitive, despite it being a hugely wealthy Catholic school, their AD is gagging for money for D1 sports. Liberty worries me. ODU plays them at home before we play them in Lynchburg. I'm waiting to see what happens with the monarchs before I write off the fighting Falwells.
    1 point
  25. I don't want to assume anything with Liberty. This team waltzed into Waco and beat Baylor opening weekend last year (even though Baylor turned out to be pretty awful). They have made the move up to FBS and have an opportunity to really make an impression as an independent. I'm not saying Liberty should be the favorite, but we shouldn't just ignore that game as a "sure-fire" win. Incarnate Word is a sure-fire win though.
    1 point
  26. And that's why I would sign up for those wins right now, to trade to lose to SoMiss and LaTech. It would create a big time buzz around the program and around Denton. And we need those kind of wins. Lose the given games and cap it off with a bowl WIN to create some momentum going into 2019.
    1 point
  27. Exactly. This will be our best opportunity. It's their third of three straight non-conf games, with a road game against Auburn the following week. They will be looking ahead hard core. Also, last year they beat NMSU at home 42-24, and Coastal Carolina (1st year in FBS) 39-38!!!! This is a team that's vulnerable. Oh, and their head coach was SMU's head coach for the past three years, so hopefully Littrell has somewhat figured him out. AND: Mason Fine is really good.
    1 point
  28. I don't know if any of those are signature wins. Beating a lousy Arkansas team sounds good but if it happens when they are down and we go 8-4, not sure it does much. Does beating Cal or Tech really move the needle? I'm not sure beating a P5 moves the needle nationally unless they are ranked.
    1 point
  29. The record would still level out to 8-4, but with wins over Ark and SMU. Or go 8-4, probably not make the conf champ game while still losing to SMU and Ark. I can set aside a division "championship" for locked in wins against SMU, Ark, and nutsack. But that's just me.
    1 point
  30. If Rice can do this against UTSA, we can do it too. Baylor was quickly exposed the next few weeks on their way to a 1-win season. And Liberty came crashing back to earth, losing 4 straight games to the likes of Jacksonville St., St. Francis (PA), Kennesaw St., & Monmouth. Basically, if you're counting on Incarnate Word to be a sure-win (which, I believe UIW would beat Liberty)... you should also be counting on Liberty to be a sure-win.

  31. Yes... if we lay an egg against smu, the rest of the season will be not as exciting. What a great opp to make a statement in front of a potentially great home crowd. Give us momentum going into the year instead of "the same old UNT" that most people will go back to
    1 point
  32. We could* have a 10-2 offense with a probable 4-8 defense. There is no telling how this season progresses. If we get good situational defense from our defensive guys, we could string together a good run in the season and end with a good record. If we get consistent 3-9/4-8 play from our defense, then there will be a lot of games like last year. So to have another good 9 or 10 win season, we will be banking on winning 5-7 1 score games. *We haven't seen an off season of preparation without Jeff Wilson. We all know what the offense has looked like without Jeff, but that was on short notice and preparation. I am eager to see what a Wilson-less offense looks like. Not really what it looks like, because I expect a lot of the same concepts, but see if there will be continued offensive continuity and success.

  34. Purely in terms of scheduling, the garbage win addition of Liberty is outweighed by the additions of Houston, Cal, Memphis, and Wyoming so I guess for me it makes up for it.

  38. I don’t know if this is a generational thing but why are some against streaming? Cable is dead except for sports and even then I stream everything through my phone or tablet and pretty much everyone I know does the same. I obviously don’t know the specifics about the deal but it appears we are sacrificing revenue for exposure on an emerging new media platform? Although the schools are seeing an increase in revenue and lowering production costs? This seems like a great deal IMHO. -GMG

  39. I would say lets stop focusing on the inevitability of losing good coaches. Instead lets focus on the fact that we have the leadership and structural organization in place now to continue our success no matter who is hired away. Lets convince the local alumni that winning is the new culture of North Texas Athletics and that there is something to be proud of going on in Denton Texas. Lets convince those same alumni that no matter how long it takes the program will never be happy until we reach the highest levels of college athletics. People inherently want to be associated with winners and upward trajectory. It's time to convince alumni that UNT is doing all the things that need to be done to make their degrees more valuable via academics and athletics. Lets sell this story to the Alumni and get them on board as this whole thing goes nowhere from here without more fans and more donors.

I told my kid, who we will probably offer Friday to ask them can you show me how many are employed by those billionaires? We're a long shot for 1 of my kids bc TCU offered Friday, OU, OSU, and Texas are all banging on the door to get him to camp

He worked with the wife for 5 years, he comes to all football and most of basketball games. He is for sure going to be a cheerleader for athletics, and truly bleeds green through and through. Trading him for Silva.....this is a good day.

  45. I have read a bunch of valid points so far in this thread. There is only one thing in the overall equation that we can control, which is our own effort. Let's just win, and let the other variables fall as they will. If we win, some of those other good things just might come to pass.
