  1. My 85 year old father uses Roku to stream games and he can't keep a laptop working for clicking on every damn we detected your computer is infected ad.

  2. I don’t know if this is a generational thing but why are some against streaming? Cable is dead except for sports and even then I stream everything through my phone or tablet and pretty much everyone I know does the same. I obviously don’t know the specifics about the deal but it appears we are sacrificing revenue for exposure on an emerging new media platform? Although the schools are seeing an increase in revenue and lowering production costs? This seems like a great deal IMHO. -GMG

  3. Just keep doing what we're doing. The next time a coach leaves or is fired, don't completely pull a 180 philosophically with the direction of the program like we always seemed to do under RV. Keep building onto what they are building now. For the 10 years after DD we were constantly in a cycle of trying to fit square pegs into round holes on both of our lines. Keep some continuity going so we can get to a point where our lines are mostly upperclassmen who've had years to develop. The very best teams we've had in my 20+ years following UNT always had experience on the lines. Its the best way to have a fighting chance to upset a P5 AND to win in conference. Same thing goes in basketball. Until they do away with the one and done rule, the best way for G5s to compete with the blue blood programs is to beat them with well oiled, experienced teams. So, I guess the program I always admired the most was Southern Miss football from the 90s - the 00s. They did the whole "more with less" thing better than anyone. I think if we had a run today like they did back then we could go a long way to changing the perception around our programs. Sustained success here, with our huge alumni base, enrollment and location has the potential to really bring in game changing dollars. Right now we're always playing second fiddle to smu in conference positioning. Every realignment scenario depends on them leaving so we can fill in the "metroplex" spot in the next conference up the ladder. We have to get to a point where we can turn the tables on that if we ever want UNT to get to where we all know it can go. A UNT football or basketball program that legitimately operated at the same budget levels as their smu counterparts could not be ignored. I don't think they could compete with us if we ever got to that point. Accomplish this and I think the top of the G5 is a given, if not more.

  8. I agree that Army and/or Navy is good for our program, but only because their supporters (which are everywhere in the metroplex) show up in larger numbers than North Texas fans. I never realized how many seats around me (section 105) had been unsold until the Army game when there were many Army fans all around me. So fill in those gaps with people wearing green instead of black and yellow........THAT is what will be best for our program. And don't piss off the best coach we've had here since Hayden Fry.

  9. No, unfortunately this is very true. The University of North Texas has some of the top programs in the state - this is a FACT We, however, are not talking about facts. We're talking about opinion, and more specifically perception. We are not a b-list or 2nd chance school because of our programs, no, we are a b-list or 2nd chance school because we perceived as being such. Even in recruiting, rarely is UNT the kids' first choice. Often we are the best fit. And there isn't necessarily anything wrong with that. Now as to the origin of this perception.... we can debate that but I'd say it's combination of lackluster athletics and a commuter school vibe. many in higher education disagree, but the quickest way to get people to take a 2nd look at UNT, and in doing so, come to the realization (through research or whatever) that we are one of the top Universities in Texas is for our football and basketball programs to have consistent success. That's how it works in Texas. People identify with athletics. Bottom line we need to win!!! And win a lot!!!

  10. If we stand pat, we could probably push for one of those AAC backfills and be in a pretty decent spot. Wouldn't have to go West at all. Or... we can make ourselves attractive enough for the big12 backfill spot you've assigned to SMU. Can we do that by winning 8-9 games per year in C-USA? I don't know. But if moving to MWC and winning 8-9 games/year out there against the likes of Boise St and other teams on that level (slightly above C-USA level in every sports fans' eyes) would help, I'd be all for it.

  11. NT fans in general bitch about anything. Imagine paying $5 coverage charge for the Coaches Caravan with refreshments provided. Now the shame of being charged like the vast majority of D1 programs for premium tickets. I made a very easy calculation, maintaining premium seatings is not high enough on my priorities to continue. However, I don't fault Baker or the university for their decision. There too many NT fans who squawk about lack of commitment to athletics by the University., but then complain when any attempt is made to raise revenues from fans. Kudos to Steamin- for supporting the program at a high level, but the truth is that athletic departments are not ran on prior donations. Contribute at the level you feel comfortable with. I don't understand why anyone who supported the program enough to have Club access would not attend future games because they have felt wronged because NT had the gaul to raise donations level for premium seats.

  12. i am confused by this section. i understand the cost going up, but the level of competition has stayed the same. the number of home games/non-weekday games has been better. from 2012-2016 we had two seasons of 5 home games and 4 seasons of a weekday game and two seasons of 5 home games where one of them was a weekday game. also, i bet you could sell your tickets on this board and not have to give them away. :)

IMO he was the district MVP but they gave that award to seniors this year... don't get me started! 16. We won a lot of close games last year, which usually means that you'll revert back a few games the next year. I expect this. I see the following happening in 2108: Near Certain wins--Incarnate Word, Liberty, @Rice, @UTEP Probable wins--Southern Miss, @ ODU 50/50 games-- SMU, @ UAB, @ UTSA, and Louisiana Tech at home--they are always tough after a down year the season before Probable losses--@Arky, FAU I see us at 8-4...
    2 points
  17. If Rice can do this against UTSA, we can do it too. Baylor was quickly exposed the next few weeks on their way to a 1-win season. And Liberty came crashing back to earth, losing 4 straight games to the likes of Jacksonville St., St. Francis (PA), Kennesaw St., & Monmouth. Basically, if you're counting on Incarnate Word to be a sure-win (which, I believe UIW would beat Liberty)... you should also be counting on Liberty to be a sure-win.

  18. Yes... if we lay an egg against smu, the rest of the season will be not as exciting. What a great opp to make a statement in front of a potentially great home crowd. Give us momentum going into the year instead of "the same old UNT" that most people will go back to

  19. She's aiming Ivy/MIT/Cal Tech with UTD and UT on the radar (I...I just don't know if I can go on living if she becomes a Longwhorn). UNT is still on the table for financial matters and the fact that she might have opportunities here that she might not get in higher profile programs. She's likely to be published this coming year, which I doubt many other programs are offering at the sophomore level.

  20. Purely in terms of scheduling, the garbage win addition of Liberty is outweighed by the additions of Houston, Cal, Memphis, and Wyoming so I guess for me it makes up for it.

I asked why you are spending your time on here if you no longer support the program. You sure spend a lot of time on something you profess to no longer care about. As I stated in my post, just want to understand. Also, just because you say something "respectfully" doesn't make what follows respectful.

  27. After a long and storied history of being the worst kind of mediocre, some on this board are completely befuddled as to why people haven't come back after two winning seasons... Unbelievable. Casual fans are just wondering when UNT will regress back towards their historical average of suck-assery. To change that, you have to win, and win for a long time. Maybe things will change if we're able to sustain some success for a long period of time. How else can we get rid of the stench that the Mean Green brand has cultivated over the past couple decades?

  28. But time zones, man???!!! And newspapers not being able to have a story about the game the next day... Why do you hate old people?? You know I'm messing with you--we agree on the MWC angle every bit as much today as we ever have--and we are deeply in the minority of UNT fans on that, sadly. I do believe--still--that the Big XII will eventually fall apart because the Pac 12 finally figures out how to network its league and add in members from the CST to compliment what they already have in the other two time zones. When it happens, some combo of the Texoma 4 and Kansas are going to head west to the Pac and the B1G. When it happens, I could see WVU finally getting a place in the ACC/SEC. If you are Iowa State, KSU, TCU, and Baylor, you're gonna be $hit outta luck. What I could see is the western AAC teams moving into the Big XII with the leftovers, seeing UH, SMU, Tulane, and Tulsa join ISU, KSU, TCU, and Baylor. And that's when the AAC raids eastern CUSA schools and the MWC finally gets back into Texas, inviting some combo of UTEP, UTSA, Rice, and us to join them.

  29. So your hate for Liberty is greater than your love for your university? You are willing to give up on the program because you don't like playing a team twice? Just want to understand the logic here.

  30. Actually, even through the Sun Belt glory days the numbers were poor because our prior AD didn't put any effort in to building the MGC. Prior to that, it was an institutional issue dating back to President Matthews, so this is an entire culture change and chasing aging alums that have never given to the university or to the athletic department is almost futile. Go after the younger alums, recent grads and prime the current students.

  33. I tend to agree with this line of thinking....usually. BUT we're returning 8 or 9 starters on EACH side of the ball from a 9 win team that had been made up of mostly underclassmen. That's another year in the system for both lines. This team has the potential, on paper, to be the best team we've fielded since the 1970's. I would be predicting a blowout win over dirty smu if they didn't just hire Dykes. That guy has been a whiz at the G5 level and his team is going to be able to put up points in buckets. I think we beat them, but he's not going to make it easy.

  35. Yep...or quarters played...some indicator of playing time. Not everyone lettered and let me tell you...players kept track of their plays and quarters and time. Lettering was important and something to actually earn. This, of course, before the days of “everyone gets a trophy”.

  36. As I read the myriad of posts about UNT athletic future success/failure/perception, I cannot help but ask myself what percentage of the people who post on gomeangreen.com are donors to the MGSF. I hope it is higher than I visualize...maybe Harry can give us a 'guestimate' of actual dollar participation from the members of GMG.com.

  38. A number of things to mention here. 1a) it is a good idea to sell surplus games to ESPN, provided it is done it the right way, i.e. keep it on ESPN2, ESPNU or at least ESPN 3, and make sure this does not mean you have to move any games for them. I think they did get the latter part right, but not the first. 1b) ESPN+ is a money grab by ESPN. It is essentially a worse ESPN3, that was given part of ESPN3s inventory in order to charge folks twice. For the customer, there is no upside to having games on both platforms rather than only 1. People will eventually get tired of paying twice and that is bad for the conference, wherefore it should have limited the deal to ESPN3. But it is just another sign of the long time trend of ESPN mortgaging the future of college football. 2) The deal with ESPN is likely for pretty much no money, but with a likely ill-advised thought on exposure (its not like being on ESPN3 gives you much exposure). I do however not quite know whether and how much ESPN contributes to production costs. If there is any benefit in this, then that is where it stems from. 3) Notice how 11 UNT games are on proper platforms now? Guess which game is not. The Liberty games remain by far the worst deal of the Wren Baker era, with really zero upside for UNT. Its not unlikely that we will all be watching that game on a crappy stream that ll make C-USA tv look good. Well at least, if things should go unexpectedly wrong, we can ask whether UNT really lost, if nobody got to see it. 4) i love that UNT got more than its fair share of BeIN games. BeIN is treating C-USA and UNT with respect.

  40. This does bother me quite a bit but there are plenty of college soccer facilities that share space with the track team. I do, however hope the AD eventually decides to build a standalone facility for soccer and give the track team the full space in this venue. For what it's worth I've seen a few soccer games at SMU and never really noticed the track being an issue.

  41. Agree to disagree then. UNT has a promising, well regarded, up and coming head coach (along with several young well regarded assistants). It benefits us to try and keep these guys happy and feeling like their needs (and sometimes just desires for the program) are being supported. Feel like Wren and the team did best by the program by addressing the coaches concerns in scheduling, then creating a great opportunity for us with the UH series as a result. I understand your personal issues with Liberty. Just feel like most of our fans will view it as a "meh" game. UH series, along with the other AAC and MWC home and homes are genuinely exciting opportunities..

  42. Agreed - the amount of excitement generated from a big, marquee win is amazing and really helps to propel a program to the next level. I remember our "win" against Texas in 1988. The amount of excitement from that one game was huge. A win at Arkansas this year would go a long way 🙂

  45. We are already basically the "U of H" of the metroplex. We just haven't had the success in Athletics and branding that they've had. North Texas and UH are very similar. We just have a real hard time with ownership (outside of music). So many of our alumni start at whatever school but finish at UNT. (Houston has this same issue) I wish there was a clever way to market this. A way to show pride in finishing strong. We're still considered a B-list school unless you want to be a teacher, Jazz Musician, or something with RTVF. Otherwise were still most people's 2nd choice. I don't know that success in athletics will change that. What it will do is bring us more notoriety, which is a really really good thing. Athletics is the doorbell of your university.... or something like that. Great conversation topic!!

  46. Liberty again? Coach Littrell & Staff did not want to play the Army games. It's as simple as that. It had nothing to do with gaining fans' interest. Sorry you hate Liberty's philosophies, but it's a football game. If we want to see UNT win games, we schedule a punching bag that is moving up from FCS this season, and drop a game that takes your team out of its rhythm for 1/12th of the season. If we want to try and accomplish what Boise St. has done, we need to follow the Boise St. model for winning games. I'm going to assume the difference between a win against Liberty VS a loss against Army & possibly the next week as well would be the difference in a bowl game & a possible 10-win season VS an 8-win season. I think UNT fans & recruits will be more on board with a 10-win team (regardless of who they play) than an 8-win team that played Army.

I saw the topic and thought "oh good someone wants to talk football instead of the AD or HC leaving, how many top 25 votes we might get in two weeks or two years, uniforms, or attendance" ...but alas, no. So I will. To circle back to the thread on the run game, I think Bussey has been an unsung hero in the run game. On several long runs I have seen number 8 out on the edge fending off a DB as Wilson gains yards.
