  2. With the news this week of Jeff, Trevor, and Kishawn heading to NFL camps, I thought I'd check in on recent grad Antonio Johnson. After spending time in the Saints' camp, he seems to have found a home in the CFL with the BC Lions.... https://www.cfl.ca/2018/01/12/lions-sign-antonio-johnson-two-year-deal/

  11. As an UDFA whoever he signs with will have his rights as an exclusive rights FA for 3 years at the league minimum with no guarantees (unless they cut him or non-tender him then whoever signs him would have his exclusive rights for the remainder of the 3 years). So either way he is forced to get the league minimum for 3 years so this will at least potentially give him a little more if he makes it every year. However even though it is a “3 year contract” it is still basically a year to year contract with no guarantees. So in essence he is signing the same 1 year deal that other UDFA sign for with the potential to make a little more.

  15. It is a reference to all air raid offense which is a system is designed out of a shotgun formation with four wide receivers and one running back. The formations are a variation of the run and shoot offense where the guards and tackles of the offensive line and the 4 defensive linemen really do not matter because we are just going to play "7 on 7". It puts an emphasis on getting the ball out instead of imposing your will on the other team. When you look at the big 12 you see "7 on 7" ball. "7 on 7" puts a ton of yards and points on the scoreboard and is well suited for tv (looks like a video game). While it is fun to watch this on "skilled positions" only the receivers and some well rounded back really translate to Sunday. If you look at the big number guys in college, few make it in the NFL. See the list below FBS passing leaders Out of 32 there are 4-5 that are not on a "7 on 7" team and Philip Rivers, Kevin Kolb, Derek Carr, and Jared Goff are really the only ones who have had some success in the NFL. (For my HSO on the QB's you will see Baker Mayfield, Mason Rudolph, Luke Falk, and Lamar Jackson get their collective ass handed to them and all but one will be out of the league after their rookie contract) 1 Case Keenum [[Houston Cougars football|Houston]] (2007–2011) 19,217 2 Timmy Chang Hawaii (2000–2004) 17,072 3 Landry Jones Oklahoma (2009–2012) 16,646 4 Graham Harrell Texas Tech (2005–2008) 15,793 5 Ty Detmer BYU (1988–1991) 15,031 6 Kellen Moore Boise State (2008–2011) 14,667 7 Baker Mayfield Texas Tech (2013), Oklahoma (2015–2017) 14,607 8 Luke Falk Washington State (2014–2017) 14,481 9 Colt Brennan Hawaii (2005–2007) 14,193 10 Rakeem Cato Marshall (2011–2014) 14,079 11 Mason Rudolph Oklahoma State (2014–2017) 13,618 12 Sean Mannion Oregon State (2011–2014) 13,600 13 Philip Rivers NC State (2000–2003) 13,484 14 Corey Robinson Troy (2010–2013) 13,477 15 Colt McCoy Texas (2006–2009) 13,253 16 Aaron Murray Georgia (2010–2013) 13,166 17 Kevin Kolb Houston (2003–2006) 12,964 18 Dan LeFevour Central Michigan (2006–2009) 12,905 19 Cooper Rush Central Michigan (2013–2016) 12,884 20 Brandon Doughty Western Kentucky (2011–2015) 12,855 21 Derek Carr Fresno State (2009–2013) 12,843 22 Tim Rattay Louisiana Tech (1997–1999) 12,746 23 Ryan Lindley San Diego State (2008–2011) 12,690 24 Luke McCown Louisiana Tech (2000–2003) 12,666 25 Chris Redman Louisville (1996–1999) 12,541 26 Chase Daniel Missouri (2005–2008) 12,515 27 Trevor Vittatoe UTEP (2007–2010) 12,439 28 Kliff Kingsbury Texas Tech (1999–2002) 12,429 29 Matt Barkley USC (2009–2012) 12,327 30 Jared Goff California (2013–2015) 12,195 31 Zach Terrell Western Michigan (2013–2016) 12,100 32 Zac Dysert Miami (Ohio) (2009–2012) 12,016

  18. This is a definite "non-commitment." If NT finds another player we like better, can we withdraw our offer ? This is the problem when dealing with children. They're children and not able to grasp adult situations.

  20. Last year when that rumor was flying around, alot of the Tech Fans said "mehhh, SL needs to get more experience, he's not ready for a big-time program like ours" etc. I LOVE SL.. And as much as i hate to admit it, i think Vito is correct... Tech might think they're a big-time program, and SL wasnt ready last year, but if KK takes a nose-dive early, Tech fans will be ravenous and immediately be calling for SL. All we know is what we see in the media, that KK has been given another chance, Tech loves him, etc... In reality, KK was likely pulled into the AD's office and told "This is your final chance...You HAVE to win at least X-number of games next year, in fact, you HAVE to win the first 6 or 7 straight, or we gotta break ties..." If KK doesnt win his first 6 in a row, SL's phone will light up...KK could be dismissed before the end of the season, and some Assistant takes over until the end of the year....Bank on it....I hate it, but that's how it's gonna play out...

  21. Read the article Ace. Snyman played three seasons for UNT but will not return for his senior year with the Mean Green due to an NCAA rule that prohibits international students from delaying enrolling in college without losing eligibility. Snyman enrolled a semester after he could have begun college at UNT.

  22. All true except the part of him leaving for Tech. I think he will stay here for a while. No one wants to go to Lubbock, he may be hit by flying tortillas.

  23. Liberty won't be that close. Neither will SMU. If NT loses to both UAB & FAU, UAB will likely hold the tiebreaker over NT to win the West. The rest is pretty good! If the beatdowns are impressive enough weeks 1&2, and we get through both games without injuries, I will likely head up to Fayetteville to watch the program-changing win.

  24. He is from my hometown and I know some of his cousins. I have sent his film to the coaching staff a few times. Never received a response, but glad they offered. TQ is a good kid, with a lot of talent. I have watched a couple of his games. I remember one when he was a Sophomore and he literally out ran the entire defense on a fade. I asked the radio guy after the game how many offers he had. His response was, he's only 15, no one has offered yet. I don't know if we will be able to sign him. I know shady Jeff Traylor is recruiting him hard to Arkansas, and Coach Bro at Tech has offered him as well. It's great to see us recruit East Texas. There are so many talented and hard working kids in the area. Good Luck TQ! Go Mean Green!

  27. Yes. And our coaches have shown the willingness to do so in their tenure here. Or, it's 2018 and coaches push for commitments earlier than they ever have. Plus there is an early-signing period now when many spots are filled up, and players are pressured to commit a year or more in advance of their high-school graduation, pushing players to commit and have a spot in a class before they may truly be ready. Or before things change drastically (i.e. Coaching staff changes, life situations, etc.).

  30. You're trying so hard to drill a point home that you're not really responding to the point of the quotes in your last two posts in this thread.

  31. Going through some of my old North Texas Media Guides I came across some quotes from the past. These are sure to bring.......smiles or smirks to all of you. "Rick Villarreal seems to be just the combination of sizzle and steak that the University of North Texas needs". DRC Editorial "This is a Major University. It's important that we have a high-visibility athletic program". University of North Texas President Norval Pohl "I want a program where we start with a vision. I think vision is a lot more than just facilities or fund raising programs. There's no reason we can't go out and win Sun Belt Conference Championships in every sport." North Texas Athletic Director Rick Villarreal. And that last little caveat reveals why we were stuck in the mud for 15 years.😩

  32. Deep, I'm not sure we have been stuck in the mud for the last 15 years. We have a great new stadium and we're out of that slime pit called the Sun Belt. Let's hope we make as much progress in the next 15 years.

  33. I think what people are saying is that when you grow up playing spread-style football in Texas, then play the same kind of football if you attend a university in Texas/Oklahoma, it is tough to transition to an NFL Pro-Style offense.

  34. I think this is all good news. Yes, it is just above league minimum. But it does show that the 49ers see something in him to get this done. UNT doesnt get guys that often in the NFL. So, for Jeff to get a shot is awesome. What kind of deal did Dubar sign with the Cowboys? I wonder if it was much different than this.

  37. Very few UDFA get 3 year contracts the day after the draft. There was probably more than one team that really wanted him. It doesn't mean a whole lot since SF could just cut him during camp and only lose any signing bonus they gave him (not sure they gave him one). It is a good sign that SF is hoping he makes the team. Checking the SF SBNation board, many of their fans really like him and think he's a good fit for their system. SF doesn't have a lot of backs so it's a great opportunity for Wilson.

  40. If you want to read more here is an article about UNT's own Todd Dodge https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/highschool/article/Texas-high-school-football-turns-to-the-spread-6700541.php In 1980, playing for Port Arthur Jefferson, Dodge achieved the improbable feat of throwing for more than 3,000 yards in a season, averaging an unheard-of 200 yards per game. Coming from the state that brought you the ground-bound wishbone and veer offenses, it had to be just a passing fad - pun intended - didn't it? These days, 3,000 yards is chicken feed. Almost 50 players statewide surpassed that mark in 2014, and hundreds have done so since Dodge's day. His own son Riley, in fact, twice surpassed the old record while playing for his father at Southlake Carroll in 2006-07. What was once an anomaly has become the rule of the road in Texas high school football, as fans will see this weekend at the University Interscholastic League title games at NRG Stadium. Of 20 teams playing over three days, at least 15 run some variation of the spread offense - the generic term for any formation that lines up with the quarterback in shotgun formation, be it with one back, two, or occasionally, none.

  41. Wow. Very surprising. Huge deal for a UDFA.

  42. FAU is not getting mudholed at OU. I would not be surprised at all to see FAU compete in that game and maybe even win it.

  43. So, is it really a commitment when you say things like, “I am verbally committed, but I am still open in case God offers me another situation that I feel better about”? I think not. The kid wants UNT to be a “place holder” for him and he has said as much. I hope he does eventually sign with the Mean Green, but in no way is he currently “committed” to the Mean Green. In fact, I would say that, as of now, he’s playing UNT. I hope the coaching staff proceeds exactly as young Mr Johnson has and continues to recruit running backs.

  44. Pretty much his entire career at SMU has involved them murdering us...if anything, our pass defense was irrelevant the last three years against them.

  45. Stracke has built a nationally ranked program that has received multiple large bids to the regional tournament. His goal is not to build a team of local players. His goal is to build a nationally recognized and ranked program. Using SMU and UTA as examples kind of reinforces Stracke's strategy because UNT's (66) golf team is ranked higher than both SMU (85) and UTA (117), even with the stumble at the conference tournament.
