  1. Did the author really reference "In-N-Out-Burger" when stating why Denton/UNT is a good draw? And then later claims In-N-Out is no Shake Shack! MF'er lost me right there.

  5. in the spirit of the moment, wife and I have booked a hotel room in frisco, about 25 miles from the house. I went on rant about "if we expect the kids to stay for 4 days, then we should do the same, it's called Karma, and it can be a bitch". Plus I figure hotel a couple of nights< expense for dui defense, Yeah, I know uber goes to where I live, but we need a sta cay.

  6. So many weapons on offense, it’s not even funny. Our outside WR’s have clearly dedicated themselves in the weightroom over this short offseason and are both nearly 210, looking like NFL players. With Lawrence, Brewer, and Darden inside, it’s short and shifty running backs, it looks a lot like those Tech offenses under Leach. We have a special QB in Mason. Good to see defense play better. First string D line is salty. Fulp looks really good as a young LB at 6’2” 235+. Young secondary is much better than last years (and the current group of “1s”) group. Davis, Siggers, and Sanders are all play making safeties. Johnson is a good looking young corner. Will be interesting to watch these positions develop.

  10. “Lawrence is one of the best possession men in the country. Of the 92 FBS players targeted at least 85 times last year, his plus-24.5 percent marginal efficiency was the best.” Amazing!

  12. It probably is a pipe dream for anyone in the G5 conferences to move up to the a Power 5 conference. However, why not strive to be the very best G5 program in the country. Strive to be up there with the Boise States, UCF, and others from G5. But it's going to take winning CUSA championships in all sports on a regular bases, and knocking off some P5's in football and basketball on a regular basis. We can do this with our present leadership.

  13. Blakeley did win 16 over the previous year (from 6-20 to 22-4) but it could have been 5-6 more if those college teams were allowed to play the same amount of games as today (around 31-32); in the regular season. That team also would have certainly had their choice of post-season tournaments; to pick up 2-3 more wins. One important factor I consider with new coaches is how did they finish the season? That Blakeley lead team finished the season on a high and was deemed the best basketball program in Texas; averaging about 8,000 in attendance. Unfortunately, other coaches have not fared as well as Blakeley in their first season: McCasland - 15-16 Johnny Jones - 15-14 Tim Jankovich - 14-15 Tommy Newman - 9-11 Tony Benford - 12-20 Vic Trilli 5-21 Jimmy Gales - 11-17. Of course, one could always point to and argue the ease in increasing wins when the predecessor had a very low number. It certainly helped Blakeley's legacy. After Jimmy Gales first campaign of 11-17, he took the team to the NCAA tournament by winning the conference/tournament. Hopefully, we will see a better ending (not that this season is over) next year under McCasland. Expectation(s) historically are higher in 2 & 3.

  14. Lost by 3 to ODU and 1 to LaTech this season. Even though we've lost many close games, I feel like we can hang with anybody in the conference. Let's make a run!

  17. I think an area were we may see noteworthy improvement is in our turnover margin (#121 in the nation in 2017). Another year of seasoning for Fine and ball carriers who may protect the ball better than Wilson did. I also expect that the coaching staff continuity this off-season compared to 2017 could really help our defense play faster - hopefully resulting in more takeaways.

  18. to quote @MeanGreenTexan we looked like hot doo doo as well. I will say this their team dwarfed us on the field. They looked more like a division 1 program than we did when it comes to athlete sizes. Obviously that ended up not mattering but still they are a force to be dealt with.

  19. I was at this game and the stall did take Guyer out of its game. Looks like it took them by surprise after 2 wins in the district. They have most of everyone back so they have a year to adjust.

  23. Well, it's fairly obvious. UAB finished second in C-USA West with an 8-4 record, and returns 17 of 22 starters from last year. Clark is a FANTASTIC coach. They will be formidable, if not win the west. We have to play them in Birmingham this year.

  24. Good article. He dug deep to find positives for the defense. Based on his win probability, and taking the win for SMU, we would finish 8-4, but I have to admit I just don't see the fascination with UAB.

  25. Heard they lost to Allen because there's no SHOT CLOCK in the playoffs??? Allen held the ball for over 3 minutes at a time? That is absurd. Why on earth would the UIL allow that to happen?

  29. Billy Gillespie was at UTEP for 2 years. His first season he won 6, then the following year they went 24-8. That 6-win team was still incredible to watch. That team played really really hard for him and the university. Filiberto Rivera is still my favorite college point guard of all time. Omar Thomas had an exceptional dribble-drive game. I don't know if the record still stands, but when he signed to El Paso, he was the all-time JUCO scoring leader.

  37. I see no advantage to being in MWC. It doesn't address reduction in travel expenses, which are only going to increase. In addition, if we did have a game on T.V. the kick would be 9:00 or 10:00, and probably in the middle of the week. Finally, some of us do like to be able to drive to road games. Albuquerque is closest MWC school to UNT, so you can forget about that. One reason we didn't want to play in the New Mexico Bowl is that our Athletic Administration figured no one would go. That, plus players having a better time in New Orleans.

  39. Why bother with kickoffs anymore then? Can't just about every FBS level kicker put it through the endzone at will? I guess it becomes a relic like the old mid-game jump balls in basketball before there was a possession arrow.

  40. It has not been a perception problem, it has been a talent problem. Orr was not drafted because he didn't fit their physical metrics, not because he went to NT.

  41. Canales coached Rivers in ‘01 and ‘02 which means he didn’t recruit Rivers and he also didn’t coach Rivers in his best season(the one that got him that 3rd overall draft spot). But I guess he can wow the recruits with that, “I spent a couple seasons with the Chargers quarterback back in college at NC State.” . Never mind the fact that he has been coaching quarterbacks for nearly 25 years and only has Phillip Rivera to hang his hat on. What has he been doing in the 16 years since he last coached Rivers? Because from my understanding I believe he has spent it job hunting because he has been run from one job to the next ever since. SEC qb coach my rear. He got run out of Utah State because they had their worst season of their current HC’s tenure the one year Chico was there. He then went to the other UT and helped Butch Jones get fired. Diner will be fired within 4 years and Chico won’t last any longer than that if he makes it that long. I appreciate Canales’ positive attitude while he was here but I’m glad we “LOCKed THE GATE” behind him when he left.

  42. I don’t know about the perception of aged pro athletes with HS athletes but I do know that the only quarterbacks worth a crap that Chico ever coached while at NT for 5 seasons were recruited by Todd Dodge before Chico arrived. Maybe Mac steered him away from certain types but you can’t say that in 5 years under 2 head coaches he couldn’t have snuck in one qb worth a spit.

  44. NT didn't get into the tourney last year, that is the only CUSA tournament that they didn't qualify. Getting into the tournament is not much of an accomplishment. To not get in is very bad. Winning 1 out of the last 6 is certainly limping into tournament play. I think it is a shame because I believe NT could have had a massive home court advantage with a little momentum. I fear the NT crowd is going to be disappointing now.

  45. Yes...they will be adding to the back side against the hill and will pretty much double capacity...a stage will be added for music, etc. as well...new furniture. However...this new area...to be named the Diamond Eagle Family Area (or something like that to honor the donors) will not be completely covered. It will have shade type covering if the drawings are any indication. It is great that the music will be moved to that area...providing more space on the original patio and a bit less blasting to ears enjoying that area. This is really great news...and this project was, in my opinion, by far, the best of the projects presented. It won with a pretty decent margin as I understand how it came out. FYI...the Diamond Eagle, in case you do not know, are a group of donors donating a minimum of $1000 annually to support worthy projects around the UNT campus. This was our first year. The part that "hooked me" and made me pony up, is that fact that we get to pick where our donations go on an annual basis. Areas of campus are encouraged to submit project ideas for consideration. I believe five will be presented to the Diamond Eagles for discussion, consideration and a vote. Winner take all! There were two functions this last year. The first to unveil the projects under consideration and the second to announce the winner. Really nice events. The idea was formed by Debbie Smatresk and moved along with the help of some great volunteers. It really is a diverse and interesting group. At the unveil I met and talked for a good while with Daisy Rogers (widow of the late great Bob Rogers). Daisy is now 96 years old. And I can tell you, it was fascinating talking with he for about 45 minutes. Oh, the stories she can tell. She has lived through them. So much fun. She was sitting alone, so I just walked up, introduced myself and we went from there. If anyone is interested in joining or thinking about joining the Diamond Eagles let me know. You will definitely be making a difference at UNT and you will be voting on where your donations go...exactly where they go. Fingers crossed that the new expansion will be ready for the SMU game this September 1st! You never know...could happen. I am just hoping it does not take as long as the new ticket facility being constructed at the Super Pit! Ha!

  46. Not running at the combine is not that uncommon and will not hurt his draft status. Neither will Barkley's stats, which are off the charts for any running back.
