  1. The only one that I've done much research on yet is Loren Easly, the SFA transfer. We may have caught some lightning in a bottle. Easly was one of the better running backs in the state during his time at Houston Westside. For his high school career he gained 3,700 yards and scored 48 touchdowns. He had always wanted to play in the FBS so those numbers got him an offer from Memphis and he decided to sign with them. As luck would have it, Easly tore his ACL during the playoffs. Of course, the offer was pulled. I don't remember the circumstances but SFA at least gave him some sort of a make good offer. I believe that he has gained over 1,700 yards there over the last two years so he's done some rehabbing. He has kin in the Metroplex so he thought he'd try again to see if he could play FBS here. He was about 15-20 pounds lighter in high school, and he ran track (sprints and relays) so I'd say that he's more of a speed back; although that could be subject to change. Edit: If Easly has half the vision that Bernard had and still has some speed and agility, opponents may not know what hit them.

  2. Welp, it kind of feels like this team is done for the year. We have a lot to look forward to, but it stings to see how disastrously this season is coming to an end.

  5. I would hate to see the same front court next year but I’m afraid we are already set there. A stretch 4 is great if you have the down low presence it should benefit.

  6. I don't know where you are getting this from. Do you remember what publication(s) you saw that from? Smart and Duffy had better offer lists and were rated higher from what I saw.

  7. I kind of had a feeling that we might end the season in a rough patch like he did as ASU. Aston did here too if i remember, and she had a similar sort of fiery attitude. I still think Mac has done a great job (look what he walked in to!)- but I believe Year 2 will really be the test.

  8. I gave him an A and I think the early results merited that. It is now in C range. The question is the last game an aberration or has this team just quit. I agree with your point, if his early success is based on that intense level coaching that can't be sustained than NT didn't make the hire I thought they did. Another problem I think the rest of the conference has caught up with his game plans. I think he makes NT very easy to defend against. The stall until about 8 seconds makes them very easy to defend. The offense seems to be get Smart a shot or let Woolridge or Lawson drive to the basket. Very predictable and only works when Smart is unstoppable. Problem lately is that Smart's continuing foul issues.

  10. Not sure what your point is. I have praised McCasland all year, but I did notice his finish at ASU was not good and unfortunately history is repeating itself. Benford had the program in shambles but he also left some good players. I don't really think a comparison with Benford is meaningful.

  11. Didn't care for ODU before they joined the conference and don't care much about them now. Outside of when we play them, I don't follow them.

  14. Not excited about it, but it doesn't cause enough of a significant detriment to my life for me to expend energy going out every day looking for things to bitch about with the AD. It just isn't life or death important to me.

  15. This is just a sport writer column stirring up the pot. Every team in the conference has a segment of fans that thinks that their team is better than CUSA. The problem unless they get some P5 attention there are no real available options. The AAC is a half step up, but has the same problems as CUSA and the Belt of being too wide spread and even more expensive. This writer's plan of starting a new football league and then having other sports in other leagues is just not workable partially for a school as far down the totem pole as ODU. As far as his attendance situation, I think that just shows how of touch the writer is. Even if every school overstated their attendance what does that have to do with his proposal? As I just recently discovered, ODU is obcensely financed by student fees and I wonder if they even belong in the fbs division. Maybe a move back to the Colonial Athletic would be their best move.

  17. He walked into the best possible situation a coach can walk in to. This was not a final four level program so no pressure to sustain it. Many returning players to build upon. Ended up with 7 scholarships to give. Hired early enough to get his own guys. And, an extremely low bar from years of losing. He was even afforded an opportunity to pad the record early with several cream puff schools at home. I hope we continue to gradually improve over the next few years. He should, however, rightfully feel more pressure going forward especially since we had to pay a buyout fee for his services.

  19. I am not advocating not renewing the ship of anyone. I just observed that a lot of programs turnover players very quickly if they think they can recruit better players. I also said that Draper should be offered a ship, while I highly doubt he would turn it down; it should be his choice.

  20. A key phrase from this article: College football is not always pretty. It could use some cleaning up, and with the way the winds are blowing, they'll pretty much have to. But Gary Patterson is certainly not the only coach who has treated players as described. If any coach in college football has earned "bulletproof" status, it's Gary Patterson. Along with Franchione, he built TCU from a loser into a powerhouse; he has shown loyalty to TCU when bigger offers came along that no one would have blamed him for jumping at. From TCU I imagine a private reprimand, a public apology, and efforts to curb these incidents in the future. But Patterson's job is probably secure.

  21. What college has students that travel well? Outside of neutral site games, most schools fill their stadiums with home crowds not visitors.

  22. I drove past the new McKinney ISD stadium yesterday. It's not, but at freeway speeds, it looks as big and as nice as Apogee.

  23. My point was pretty clear. He inherited a mess that had barely won anything in the last few years. I would consider .500 record a success this year. No comparison to Benford, just stating a fact.

  24. No way Draper should not be offered a scholarship. I don't know McCasland's tactics, but overwhelmingly these days players that are not contributors or let go. Fuller and Miller are very vulnerable.

  25. Many guys end up over-coaching; where the players aren’t as comfortable anymore with their initial roles. This became evident with the frequent substitutions. We had several close games because the staff coached each possession. The kids, in most cases, have to be free to play instinctly and not restricted. The only kid that was/is not restricted is AJ Lawson and he is the main kid that needs to be restricted. My concern for next year is that the roster appears to already be set. The only available scholarship will go to Draper. The Russian kid appears to be another finesse big outside shooter. This teams needs a consistent down low post game to help the outside shooters.

  26. If I read GG's post correctly, then I am in agreement: this is a flag that we should be concerned about going into next year. Hopefully it amounts to nothing. I would love to chalk this up to the phenomenon most teams experience: one or two bad losses that shouldn't have happened (just like one or two wins that shouldn't have happened)

  27. From the little I've seen he looks like a fiery guy. Screaming and getting in guys faces might work early but after awhile you start to tune him out. Maybe part of the reason why his teams struggle in the second half of the season. Still taking the dumpster fire of a team to being mediocre deserves at least a C+.

  38. In all honesty, I struggle to really see the east as being in the same conference as us since we only see one of them at Apogee each year and for some hellish reason, that one team seems to always be an F_U school. (I know it's not, but it feels like it)

  39. I think the greater point he is making is the one that many of us share, which is to make the SBCUSA a regional setup, not cross country conferences that overlap each other. ODU, Charlotte, and the F_Us have no business playing in a conference with us in Texas. Same with Texas State and ULL playing Appy State or Georgia Southern as conference mates. It’s dumb and the CUSA BB tournament at the Star will show that when MTSU and WKU or ODU are playing a title game in front of 250 people. This isnt brain surgery. It’s very doable.

  43. Ahh, guess someone isn't a fan of Mr. Gaddie. That's too bad that someone wouldn't be a fan of a young man that decides to forego his Saturday to come to Denton and perform for our program. Trollers gonna troll. Too funny. Sad but funny.

  44. Some additional observations: 1. Fine was razor sharp. Hitting all his throws. Touch-fade routes, fly routes, cross routes, whatever... nailing his receivers every time. He and Shanbour were having fun out there. Jumping/running around, headbutting guys, yelling... just clowning when they weren't on the ball. 2. As stated above, 3 kickers were out there. I know when it's 33 degrees outside, it's like kicking a football-shaped rock, but that was not bothering Hedlund nearly as much as it was bothering the other 2 dudes. He was even wearing #30. I had to double-check the roster to make sure Moore wasn't still out there. Williams was struggling. 3. DL was really working out there. 1st team appeared to be: Hambone/Tauaalo/Young. Young was playing 3 or 4 technique all practice. No reps at the nose from what I saw. It looks like they want to keep him out there this season instead of him playing the nose. Dayton LeBlanc looks the part, but he was huffing/puffing pretty bad out there. To be expected I suppose for a dude who should be getting ready for his Sr Prom. Strength/Nutrition programs will get him ready to go. He could be a contributor this year like Novil/Krasniqi were last year. 4. 1st team OL appeared to be: Murray/Woodworth/SMose/MMose/Mayfield (just as yours-truly predicted!). We'll see if that line sticks. Coach Littrell brought up moving guys around... said Woodworth may even be moved to RT if Mayfield doesn't get his extra year of eligibility. Sounds like he wanted Preston at Guard to take Henson's spot. Barr was out there, but as far as I could see, he wasnt even getting reps with the 2nd team. 5. WR's... oh man!! All of them looked VERY good. Didn't matter who was throwing to them. Good to see White back out there again. I think he'll be a nice contributor. He and the 2 incoming freshmen will be duelling for Smiley's reps. Got to chat with Rico Bussey's dad. Great dude. Kelvin Smith looked good. Chumley was out there, but not participating... injured? 6. Didn't watch the DBs or LBs as much as I wanted, but watching Brooks man-to-man on Guyton made for some great entertainment. Both guys going hard. Both making nice plays. It was hard for Guyton to get separation from Brooks. 7. The RBs looked good. I forgot Torrey was already on campus, so I didn't get many looks at him. He was out there though, but he must not have wow'd me or I would have had to look up his #. Surprisingly, I thought Wyche looked good! Nic Smith picking up right where he left off. I got to chat with Coach Choice a little afterward. Infectious guy. So glad he's on the staff. Having these young guys with fairly-recent NFL experience on staff is HUGE for us in the recruiting game. Was very excited about Garrison Johnson visiting. He was almost drooling over the guy's size.

  45. Yet ANOTHER sign that this is not the same ol' North Texas and that progress is upon us. It may not be as fast as some (all) would like to see, but only a fool would deny the good things happening over the last few years* *Cue those exact fools in 3...2...1...

  46. Completely disagree on this being a great situation to come in to Cooley. Sure he had no expectations, but he also didn't have much to sell or work with. I think a .500 season is about the extent of my hopes coming into this year.

  47. I’m confused on Miller. From all the pre-season magazines and articles I read he was our top JUCO recruit. He hasn’t shown me much, but I have to assume there is something there. Since he will be a senior I feel more comfortable keeping him that Fuller. Draper has definitely earned his spot on the team, but if he has the means to stay on without a scholarship I would love to see us get bigger and better on the post. I mean no slight to Draper, but the post needs to be addressed this off season.

  48. I’m hoping Draper stays as a walk on and we manage to move on from Fuller. We need those two scholarships to sure up the post and get some longer/more athletic defenders. If we keep Fuller and put Draper on scholarship I do not expect a large improvement next season.
