  1. I'm sorry, but having students, more specifically UNT students, with this kind of power over athletics is absurd. Are we doing this out of respect to the student body? Or does it have to be done in this manner. If not, cut the small talk, pull the rug out from underneath their bleeding hearts, and get it done.

  2. Just some head's up info regarding this year's CUSA Basketball Tournament. As everyone is pretty much aware, the tournament will be help in Frisco at the Star this year. That is fantastic news for UNT fans for certain, but, it does come with some caveats. The biggest being, that if we want the tournament to remain local, UNT needs to show up BIG TIME! That means in both rears in the seats and in ticket sales. As I understand it, our ticket "guarantee" is around $38,000.00. Looks like a big number, but it is definitely doable for UNT fans...and then some. Some specifics: Tournament Dates: March 7-10, 2018 Location: Ford Center at the Star in Frisco Tickets: ALL general admission...and, at this point two levels...general seating $125.00 and Premium seating $180.00 per ticket. If you look at the UNT Ticket Office site on Ticketmaster you can see the court configuration. There will be two courts at the Star turned perpendicular to the current seating for football. The $125.00 tickets appear to be in the "football" seating area while the premium are courtside. Looks as if only one side of each court will have seating (all this from a view of the Ticketmaster site). I have been told that the premium tickets will allow one to watch any game at any time and all games throughout the tournament. This would include both men's and women's games. The $125.00 will not allow this all-access, and will be more "game specific". I have no clue if that is exactly true nor how the "game specific" would work. Just passing on info as I have it at this point in time. PLEASE FOLKS...if you are looking to purchase tickets to the CUSA Tournament, it is important that you purchase through the UNT site IF we want to try to keep this tournament in Frisco for a few years to come. I believe the current contract is for two years only at the Star. With UNT's partnership with the Cowboys and with UNT pretty much hosting these games along with The Star and CUSA, it would be great to see UNT fans come out in big numbers to support the tournament and both its men's and women's teams. If anyone has any additional or updated info, please post it here as a central CUSA BB Tournament Thread. Might help everyone to just have a central place for "one-stop CUSA shopping". And, yes, I ordered my two Premium level CUSA tickets today on-line through the UNT ticket site on Ticketmaster. Easy...no problems at all. Hope to see a big MEAN GREEN turnout at this year's tournament. Would help to get some high seeds of course. So, come on men, come on ladies!!!

  3. It'd have a short term opposite effect, sure. But this year's freshmen, the year after, and after, or after, and so on and so forth won't care or even know of this.

  5. Exactly...and why should this be any different? Do the students decide if the university wants to increase funding for research? Or to building another classroom? Or hiring distinguished professors? Or to buy new lab equipment? The list can go on and on and this should be no different. The final decision should be up to the Board of Regents. They are the ones that approve of the budget. Athletics are the closest alumni tie to the university and denial could adversely affect alumni giving. True, it could also influence the decision of prospective students but if we remain competitive with other Texas universities we will likely lose very few students. There are limits on the amount of athletic fees that can be charged in Texas by state institutions.

  8. Looking forward to the second coming of *Joe Greene and/or Booger to walk on as well. Down the corridor of years. I've observed that the LB's and DB's are much more successful when you have someone stuffing the run and making the QB run for his life......all the while screaming like an 8 year old girl. * I would also take the second coming of Walter Chapman or Rex Johnson.

  9. well...THAT explains it. I had wondered why A J just did not seem to be the A J of last year through the early part of the season. I figured it was just "adjusting" to a new system and coaching staff and teammates. Nope, the kid is injured and has been trying to "play through the pain". Wow, I had no idea. Top be a basketball player and have a wrist injury to your shooting and dribbling hand has got to be super tough. So sorry to hear of this and hope he can heal soon. Hopefully, playing with it does not create even more challenges. His team needs him, but they need a health AJ. All the best to AJ as he works through this injury. He's a warrior, he will get through it, but, darn, what a shame of the kid. Bummer. Get well, AJ!!!

  10. Agree. Huge advantage for our teams. Will need to support it this year in hopes a multi year contract is done afterwards.

  12. Don’t think that SL stays, just to get a conference championship, but I do think LK will have an impact on G5 coaches. LK has coached at major programs and major media markets, and him settling down at FAU just shows he is waiting for that 1 job or he is truly happy at FAU.. You have to think, if you can have success at FAU the recruits will come even if it’s a G5 (just look at last years class and FIU with 2 4* DTs). Not having the pressure, media, etc of a Bama, OU, etc is a huge as well if the school can invest in the program as well. Also, SL dream job seem to be OU, and that is held by Riley... and I have no idea if Riley would even consider leaving and if he did, where too? SL is a smart guy, but I do think he will be around for the foreseeable future.

  14. ...and were just as quickly scared to death when he brought both coordinators with him from Southlake. Anyone who witnessed that 79-10 thrashing in Norman could not possibly have been excited about the hire from then on. Also, bad hire doesn't cut it. His hire was a disaster. The worst hire in the history of the school, and it is not close. The Dodge era is what is responsible, more than anything, for the current perception of North Texas football being a wasteland. I guess I should say prior to this year. Dodge was viewed as a football celebrity who was just a pure "winner." I had extended family who didn't give a crap about UNT who followed along casually during those years (never, mind you, actually witnessing a game) and they always thought that this "winner" would eventually get UNT turned around. When he got fired his reputation didn't really take that big a hit, outside Denton. It was the North Texas stink/suck that kept him from winning, and not the other way around. Thus, it became fashionable to think that it was impossible to win in Denton. He was a good man, but good freaking gravy he NUKED North Texas.

  19. Anyone here ever been to Haiti? No, I have not, but everything I read and see reflects a very poor and "troubled" nation void of any real leadership and having leaders for years that did nothing for their people, but rather line their own pockets. Sean Penn aside, this place is a shambles and was before the hurricane. Now, calling it a "shi...hole" is out of line, if in fact that is what happened, but the place reeks of corruption, extreme poverty and any real leadership focused on fixing the real life day to day challenges met by its citizens. a great many of its citizens depend upon the aid of nations such as the United States to even be able to survive. That does not say a lot of good things about the nation's leadership. Haiti needs a real leader to step forward to say..."enough is enough", and to focus on the real needs of its citizens. There are enough beautiful sights and history in that nation to reap plenty of benefits from tourism. Incentives could be provided for foreign investment to create industry and jobs that would employ local citizens and provide a much higher wage than currently earned, etc., etc. Heck, they could even turn it into a gambling mecca like Las Vegas or something similar. Haiti has ports deep enough for container ships and tankers and cruise liners. There is nothing, except past history and corruption and a reliance on foreign aid, that says Haiti cannot become a self-sustain decent economic engine in the Caribbean. The ONLY thing holding Haiti back is Haiti itself. But, of course the same can be said for many cities in the United States and several other nations around the world.

  20. isn't our LB coach one of the better recruiters? Why do we have so many walk on MLB and WLB??? I know a lot of those guys can contribute on special teams, but man... we need some help on the actual defense. I think our top 2 lbs are decent but there is little proven ability behind them rn.

  21. Just thought I would mention, Coach Choice posted the video below. The video was retweeted by rapper T.I. so it's posted on T.I.'s official page and available to his 8.2 million followers. It was also retweeted by several NFL players. The ones I could find are Andy Levitre (OL, Falcons), Fred Jackson (RB, Bills for 8 years, now free agent), Brandon Boykin (CB, Ravens), CJ Spiller (RB, Chiefs) and NBA player Thaddeus Young (Pacers). Just thought I would mention it since it's quite a bit of publicity for UNT. All of these guys have pretty strong Twitter followings. This may not mean much to most of you, but any recruit or fan stumbling onto their pages will see UNT there.

  24. Am I the only one that it drive crazy that professional journalist Bert Frito doesn't proof his own work? Even I know that even if you even spell hit spell check, even is still a word spelled correctly, so even if you hit spell check, it wouldn't catch even as being a misspelled word. This event doubles as earning the nick name, Bert Frito.....

  25. Dodge was a "high risk high reward" hire that blew up in our face. The biggest problem I saw was that he brought most of his high school staff with him, and they were over their heads. As far as money, we paid him more than Dickey, which shows you how little we had to work with. This was the 1st nail in R.V.'s coffin, from which he never recovered. This hiring mistake was compounded by replacing Dodge with Coach Mac, who ran an offense that probably looked good in the 80's. The success he had during our HOD victory was with Dodge's recruits except for Thompson, who I believe was signed by Dickey.

  27. When a 5-10, 165 lb walk on scores 23 pts, snags 4 rbs, has 2 assists, and goes 8 for 11 with 6 three pointers he deserves praise. I know Smart was incredible but we don't win this game without DJ as well. In the post game McCasland said he is our best shooter.

  36. I read this after I posted the ego stroke post. But do you see? Kids are like this in this day and age. It's eccentric and blatantly and openly self centered. That's the new age "kid". And to be honest social media is a significant reason for it. Psychologists are stating that never in the history of mankind has the adolescent population been more self conscious, more perceptually influenced, and lived their life through the thoughts and reactions of other people. It is a self assurance and reassurance generation.

  38. Kiffin is leaving as soon as he can. He's just gotta rebuild a pretty damaged reputation first, and his personality alone is gonna scare away a lot of the big boys. Win enough and that won't matter, but it'll take more than a year.

  40. Since the students are the ones paying for the fee either from mom and dad or mounting student loans, they should absolutely get a voice by vote. The athletics fee is the only fee they have control of. The university raises tuition and fees all the time whether the students like or not.

  41. Thompson was a Todd Dodge signee. He was signed in ‘09. The last Dickey signee should’ve left by ‘11 or ‘12. ‘Kelvin Drake and Craig Robertson were the last Dickey players I can recall seeing playing time. 2013 was all Dodge and Mac players.

  42. I think we agree.... How in the world did a black man with an Arabic name get elected.....??... Having the other party end with a terrible economy, a questionable war, plus having a VP candidate that many thought was nearly nuts and afraid could become President. .

  43. Wilson is pretty special and it was evident those last 2 games without him. He was always a threat to take it to the house. This is probably why our passing game struggled a bit more without Wilson, especially Guyton who I bet received more attention than normal. We always seem to do a good job of replacing really good backs. Hopefully, that will continue next year.

  45. Just this morning an alum who attended a few games during the Jones era, and never bothered with Benford, told me he had taped the Georgetown game and just got around watching it. He grew up in northern Va and went to a lot of Big East and ACC games in his youth. He said we finally have someone who knows how to coach (he said neither Trilli or Jones or Benford could coach) and he is coming back.

  46. A few thoughts: 1. If Smart is off, we probably aren't going to win. At least against teams in the top half of the conference. He didn't play awful but he missed a lot of good looks. We need our best player to make teams pay on those and he didn't. This is a also a disadvantage of having your best player be a pure shooter type. Even the best shooters are off sometimes. Gotta find other ways to score. 2. AJ Lawson continues to struggle. Plain and simple, he isn't a good shooter. He has never been a shooter, but he's good at getting into the lane and getting decent shots off around the basket, which he is not converting enough of. Contested, but good looks and he has missed way too many of them. He is a guard shooting 54% on his free throw attempts and 20.5% on his 3-point attempts. Our point guard is shooting 59% too. Lawson may never be a good shooter, but surely he can get up to around a 33% 3-point shooter and close to 70% on his free throws. I wonder if we had a healthy Gibson, how much less Lawson would be playing, particularly in crunch time and on games where he is off. He gives a lot defensively, but he has been a liability on offense. 3. This team has made a lot of losing plays down the stretch, and it finally caught up with them the last two games. Against USD we blew it down the stretch to let them get to OT, then let them steal and inbounds pass and have a chance to tie the game at the end of OT, which they missed. UTEP, they also stole the inbounds at the end but missed a game-winning shot they got from the stolen inbounds. UTSA, we blew a 6-point lead in the last two minutes, plus Holston missed the front end of the one and one after Temara's block. Fortunately they too missed a game-winning attempt. Finally with Charlotte, they made us pay for blowing a 4-point lead in the last minute and Holston missing a free-throw to put us up by one, by sneaking by us for the game-winning put back with no one paying attention. Yesterday we had a bad possession going before the questionable Woolridge travel call, after missing a lot of free throws in the second half including the front end of one and ones. Still a young team learning how to close teams out, instead of them letting the other team close themselves out.
