  1. And the pessimistic whining never stops around here.

  2. Just spitballing here, but is it not more likely that the "not just about the next 2 years, but the next 10 years" has less to do with NFL draft prospects and more to do with post-graduation job prospects with a Vanderbilt degree. Is it at all possible that our fanbase could, for once, just acknowledge that kids pick other schools for a myriad of reasons that DON'T require us crapping on our own school?

  3. No, in my field the mistakes are blasted in the local press, every coffee shop, thousands of message boards and...IF I were as bad at my job as Dodge was while here...it would be on CNN and Fox News because somebody is dead or at least wrongfully beaten

  4. Dodge wins while at UNT and those teams' records: 2007 -- Western Kentucky, transitional FBS -- 7-5 (All 7 wins over FCS opponents) Louisiana Monroe -- 6-6 (This team actually beat Alabama who had an uncharacteristic 7-6 year) 2008 -- Western Kentucky, transitional FBS -- 2-10 (2 wins over FCS Eastern Kentucky and Murray St.) 2009 -- Ball St. -- 2-10 (Wins over 0-12 Eastern Michigan and 5-7 Western Michigan) Western Kentucky -- 0-12 2010 -- Florida Atlantic -- 4-8 Cumulative opponents' record, including FCS games 21-39. Six wins in 3 1/2 seasons. Three of those wins were over a hapless Western Kentucky team. Best win appears to be against the juggernaut of Louisiana Monroe. It's difficult for me to determine if 2008 under Dodge or 2015 under Mac was the worst season I've seen. Mac at least fooled me into thinking that he knew what he was doing there in 2013. Dodge never offered any such comfort, fleeting as it may have been. As to high school, discounting the endless resources provided at Southlake and Westlake: Cameron Yoe -- 8-12 Carrollton Newman Smith -- 9-11 Keller Fossil Ridge 7-12 Marble Falls 8-12 So best assessment I can objectively give after looking through the records is that if you give him the best of the best of everything, he can coach a Greg McElroy, but if you put him in a position to build from the ground up, well, he ain't no Jim Leavitt.

  5. I was a student at the time of the Todd Dodge hire, and was a big fan of it at the time. His biggest problem was hiring all HS coaches as his assistants. If he would of succeeded and done well UNT football would of blown up and been highly successful.

  6. Players are drafted into the NFL because of their talent not were they when to school at. The fact that NT hasn't had anyone drafted in ages is because they have not recruited that kind of talent. Faulty thinking to believe you will be drafted at school A and not school B because scouts are to lazy to scout all schools.

  7. The guy wasn’t successful here. It’s noted. Doesn’t mean he is a terrible football coach is all I am saying.

  8. 😳First...how many times thru the decades were we as fans & alums made aware that NFL scouts were at our Mean Green football practice sessions or at Fouts Field (& now fabulous Apogee Stadium) for Game Days? THIS: ➡️ From DFW Airport it's only a 30 minute drive for any NFL Scout to make up to our Denton campus. At some NCAA D1 locales (even P5's) the plane would have to circle the town & then said NFL scout yell "GERONIMO!" jumping out of the plane hoping said parachute unfurls! OK, so Mr. Tyree changed his mind---so what? Maybe someone (another recruiter?) got to him & possibly even gave him a script to use for his excuse or.....maybe not. They are kids, folks. We all been there done that kid thing ourselves. (Still...make one more pitch to him, UNT coaches). 🏉❇️❓BUT......A FUTURE NFL 'er LOST IN OBLIVION IN THE USA's 4'th LARGEST TV MEDIA MARKET, i.e., the NORTH TEXAS METROPLEX? (I don't think so). 🏉❇️Former Dallas Cowboys Super Scout Gil Brandt was the first to use a computer for the NFL draft in the 60's. If Billy Bob Jumpback at Sippery Rock U was a potential NFL #1 or #2 draft choice, his computer would reveal it. Today the NFL draft is much more sophisticated. 🏉❇️No NFL talent will get left behind even in some backwater (Sippery Rock U?) college locale. UNT "IS NOT" located in some forgotten location & gets coverage from every DFW area TV station along with the Denton Record-Chronicle, the Dallas Morning News & the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. UNT is almost "media top heavy!" (Considering.....we've gotten our share & methinks based on all happening now that is only going to get better in the next 10 years). 🏉 ❇️Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine periodical ranked our school higher than most of us can remember toward the end of the regular season. THEN THERE WERE THESE 3 ❇️❇️❇️: University of North Texas Mean Green greats Mean Joe Greene , Cedrick Hardman & Leonard Dunlap were all 3 NFL #1 draft choices after they finished their eligibility in Denton, Texas. All played in the shadows of the SWC, but how many Southwest Conference schools during the same time produced 3 #1 NFL draft choices? Answer: None HIgh Schoolers & JUCO's change their minds. If he changed it again back to UNT I'd bet our coaches would still welcome him back with open arms. 17 & 18 yo kids just do things like change their minds. Didn't we all do that at some point & at the same age?

  9. Frankly, a player that does not want to be here is a liability not an asset. However, a commitment should mean something by both parties. However, we fans are happy when another school loses a commit to us. So we are all hypocrites to some degree.

  10. Part of our problem? Moron fans tweeting at recruits and players and coaches.

  11. Don’t be bitter.. kid owes us nothing.. he is doing what is best for him and his family... No matter what, where else he goes.. they will be the fall back/2nd option. Vandy is a great education and in the SEC. can’t doubt or be disappointed because many people here 3 days ago thought we had 0 Chance.

  13. Soooo Both Robertson and Orr were not drafted but have made a big impact in the NFL. The school doesn’t get you into the NFL, the player does. If you work your ass off good things happen. Jerry Rice went to Alabama right? Carson Wentz went to Texas tooo!! No wait, that’s wrong they didn’t go to big well known Pro producing schools.

  14. We were about 55% from the FT line tonight. If we could get up to 75%, we win this game. I know they are working on it, but they have to get better at the line.

  16. Dodge was a "Hail Mary" hire that no other fb program would have likely picked as a head coach. Only a completely incompetent AD would have added to that decision with allowing him to bring basically a high school staff with him. That being said, Dodge was a pretty good offensive coach and recruiter by NT standards at that point. He also demonstrated he was a man of high character and I never heard him complain or blame anybody but himself. If he wants to try the college game, I can't think of a better situation than the above rumor. He wouldn't have to move and if it doesn't work out, he can always find another high school gig.

  18. I thought perhaps the worse call was the one a few possessions earlier on Ryan when they called carry. Carrying could be called last night on both ends every possession. You don't wait to call that until we're in crunch time.

  23. I hit em with a smile and ask about my kids they have in class and what I can do to help motivate them to be more successful. It always catches them off guard and usually leads to some support from their end as long as the kid isn't being a jerk. Usually works out well, I'm learning how to politic on small scale level.

  27. Let me be more clear so you will understand. Southlake Carroll - Affluent suburb with greater resources than their competition...Dodge succeeded North Texas- Played in Fouts and had resources on par with an FCS...13% winning percentage Marble Falls- Not an overly affluent school...fail Austin Westlake- Affluent school with better resources than their peers...almost made a state title game UT- Among the top 2 or 3 schools in all of FBS in revenue...you seeing the pattern yet???

  29. He wanted to hire coach Evans but RV told him no, then changed his mind. But by then Evans had signed with La Tech forcing Dodge to stay with what he had. So at least one of the poor coaching hire decisions was completely out of his control. There could have been others. If he has the talent the guy is a hell of an offensive coach. Rick

  33. Children shouldn't be allowed to "commit" to anything. Most would not be allowed to sign a contract such as a lease without a parental co-sign. And so I wonder why we waste paper and time on a "commitment" that is anything but. Now, can anyone think of an NT "commit" that "decommitted" and ended up back at North Texas ? We should use terms like "going steady" and give out "promise rings." GO MEAN GREEN

  34. Let’s just randomly say HS HC names. Claud Mathis! Randy Jackson! John Walsh! Reginald Samples!

  35. Agreed. Dodge like any first time college head coach needed a good staff around him. He was able to recruit to some degree. He coached a decent offense. But there were too many gaps because he had a vastly inexperienced coaching staff. Was that all his doing, was his staff pool too small? Who knows. But I'd argue the only way he should have got a crack at the job was if he had a really good staff put together or was willing to work with RV and others to put one together. It was the only way, he had a chance to be successful. He got the staff wrong, the rest is history.

  36. The NFL drafts guys every year from all levels of college football in various rounds. If you can play (with size and speed) you will be drafted. Mason Fine will NOT be drafted regardless of his stats.

  38. second to last in free throw percentage in conference (66%)....that shit is going to lose us more games...gotta get that fixed and quick

  39. Not a good assessment. Newman Smith is always trash. Cameron Yoe is normally a solid program but you’re talking about a school with 500 kids total. You guys just hate this man and you honestly know absolutely zero about coaching the game of football. He had a bad run here. It happens. He isn’t a terrible coach. You can’t say he is based on what he did here, he was in a shit situation. Good thing your every move in your career isn’t blasted on a message board.

  41. Good game despite the loss.. I love seeing the hustle and the fight in this team. Not sure whenthe last time I saw carrying called in a game? The walk call on us with 4 seconds left was garbage. Porter may be the best physically gifted player I've seen play at the Super Pit since Tony Mitchell. But he sure has the Bill Laimbeer act down pat. Anyone catch it when Coach Mac told our player throwing the ball in from under our basket at the end there to "leave the ball" out on the floor and wait for someone to hand it to him.....in order to give our other four players time to set up properly and get ready for the deep throw in? Smart move. It's the little things like that I feel will make the difference down the road for us. Rick

  42. I am not bitter. I was commenting on his statement where he said many wouldn't understand. If that is his worry, then explain yourself.

  43. Very good defense, poor second half foul shooting and super effort from NT. NT had no answer for Porter, he dominated the game. If NT had this effort against Charlotte, they would have run them out of the arena. NT is 2-2 and could have easily be 4-0 or 0-4 in conference. Woolridge is a warrior, but I don't understand never giving him a break.

  44. That could well be the point of his tweet, or it could be that he feels a degree from Vanderbilt will open more doors than a degree from North Texas. Got any suggestions for addressing that?

  45. I don't believe the premise of this thread is correct. In the midst of this run of success, their 2018 recruiting class has 17 commits, 2 of which are 3-star recruits. Only a few of their commits have FBS offers. Most of them are from the frozen north--Minnesota in particular--so they're used to cold weather. Only one of their commits is from anywhere south of Illinois. So it's not like they're making a living by stealing away recruits coveted by FBS schools. They've been good at identifying solid underrecruited talent, particularly from their own geographic region, and coaching it up.
