  1. Bob Ballou of CBS Austin On Monday Central Florida upset Auburn 34-27 to win the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl. The Knights and Scott Frost did everything the right way this year - won all their games, handled Frost's move to Nebraska with class - all of it was awesome to watch. The aftermath of their win is getting uglier by the day though. Let's start with a simple fact. You cannot compare wins by using the transitive property of equality. That needs to stop. Just because UCF beat Auburn, who beat Alabama and Georgia, does not mean UCF is better than the entire SEC. It also is a little over the top for Central Florida to declare itself national champions, although in fairness, the school is going to pay its coaches their national championship bonus. Even so, the team did not go to the playoff and did not win the national championship. This, however, is not to entirely knock UCF for its stance because its stance is part of a much bigger issue. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby told ESPNs Heather Dinich that he's not looking to expand the playoff, but more ridiculously - told her UCF was treated **fairly** because the Knights likely wouldn't be undefeated had they played in a power five conference. Said Bowlsby, “They have some big games, but they don't have an Iowa State who can beat Oklahoma.” By the way Iowa State lost five games, four to unranked teams. I absolutely hate this reasoning. Hate it. Commissioner Bowlsby, with all due respect, you don't know that it's likely they'd be undefeated. No one knows that, and it's why the NCAA's system is flawed. Prove that Scott Frost didn't just assemble the best staff in the country coupled with the best recruits in the country. Prove that. You can't. There is quite literally no way to prove that UCF wasn't the best team in the country this year and that's a huge problem. In case you're wondering about little ol' Central Florida in its little ol' conference, the school is the biggest in the state of Florida, besting Florida itself by more than 9000 students. Florida State is 5th. That school – UCF - can't produce the best team in the country? Are we 100 percent sure Central Florida's players aren't as good as those in the power five? If you believe the recruiting rankings in the last five years, the Knights were as low as 79 and at its peak – 55th. Take that into consideration, 13-0 must have just been an absolute miracle. There are years that the non-power five conference team might just be the best in the nation, yet we'll never get the chance to find out. How is that a fair system? '04Utah, '06 Boise, '08 Utah, '09 Boise and 2010 TCU all deserved to know if their undefeated seasons were good enough to match the big boys. 2017 UCF did too. And just so you know the arrogance with which UCF - and every other non power-five program must face - Bowlsby added this gem at the end, “If TCU and UCF played 10 times, I defy anybody to convince me UCF would win the majority of the games. Of course, I've only been looking at it for 35 years.” That's why all of this is a total sham for UCF - and any team like them. Commentary

  8. I witnessed on two separate occasions, once on tv and once live and right in front of me, at least 50 of your "high character guys" commit unremorseful assault. They just took turns slapping around and beating up on the defenseless. It was disgusting and you should be ashamed.

  9. If we go undefeated next year or you I am all for declaring us the national championship. The second they let us in, the recruiting will be wide open once you show you can win the whole thing anywhere. And then opps, there goes the money for P5. I hate cartels.

  12. I don't know, did we do for FAU the same thing we did for Portland State? Did Todge's loss to Navy help Johnson get the GaTech gig? How can you sack a QB 7 times in a single game and still get blasted on the scoreboard? I'm sure Troy was happy to take the W. What about the ghost TD in Austin 1988? On one hand it's remarkable that one school can be on the wrong end of all these historic scores. On the other, I am pretty f'n tired of being said school.

  13. i would say 99% of the universities that recruit athletes use the female students as a recruiting tactic. utsa and utep might not because nobody will believe them when they say they have attractive females on campus.

  20. ---Maybe the caller ID was shown [ and spoofed ] to 911. BUT .. It they had actually entered that number into the phone and called ( not just returned the call ) ... they would have discovered it was fake especially since the caller wasn't even in the same area code... and not the guy that really called. There was nothing to lose by doing this. ... and he would not have been shot.... The police need to get smarter. ... also not so fast to shoot when aren't certain he has a gun and are at a rather safe distance.... This is terrible police work.

  22. It means he is one amoral SOB and is using the lowest form of enticement to recruit a football player. If that is all it takes to get someone on your roster and enrolled at a fine institution like Baylor, is that the type of person you want representing you and your university? I'm glad you like him. You can keep him.

  23. No justification in the killing but they did not know the guy didnt make the call. The gasoline all over the house mother and brother in a closet. I think we are seeing more acts like this because our society has become so much more violent. I watched video of cop being shot by a guy who had minor offense. The officer chased him down without his gun drawn and when the police officer caught up to him he the pulled out a gun and shot the officer a few times. Luckily the officer survived and it was all on video tape. The guy who made the call should be charge with conspiracy to commit murder. When I was in albuquerque the police got a call to do a welfare check on an individual, called made by the individual. When the two officers showed up at his home he ambushed them killing both officers. They never had their guns out. It has to be a highly stressful job and I doubt that i could do it. I wish I had the answers for all this crap but I have no idea. I dont think this guy had to make a split second decision in this manner. The guys life could have been saved.

  25. Have to think he shouldn’t need a lot of time. Since he will have the spring to adjust, along with him having multiple solid offers. Similar to Jenkins (or even better offer list) and Jenkins was hampered by getting to campus only 10-12 days before this first game vs SMU 2 years ago.

  26. I finally got around to watching his tape and now I'm VERY excited about this kid . His athletic ability and instincts jump out at you. Also, many of those big plays could only come from a lot of film study and knowing what the offense is going to run. You worry about JC guys taking time to find their way at this level but he has the tools to succeed from the get go. EDIT: Someone gave me a down vote for this post? Seriously? I guess some SMU fan was visiting ...

  29. Great question. I wouldn't take him over SL as head coach, but I might take him over GH as OC. I'm all about high character people, but that offense might make me loosen my stance a little bit.

  33. There is a new attitude and a new regime in place from top to bottom and folks across departments are “cooperating and playing nice” with each other. And, there is a joint effort going to try to increase attendance at both football and basketball games. So, with that in mind, I suggest some emails and phone calls to the Athletic Director, the Dean of the Music School, the VP for Advancement and President Smatresk suggesting that the band could, but is not currently, an asset for either spirit or attendance at games. And, that one thinks that if the band once again became a spirit booster and entertaining at games that both attendance and donations to both the School of Music and Athletics would increase. These calls and/or emails should, of course be professional and reasoned. And, constructive ideas should be presented. Think about your correspondence as if you were on the receiving end, not the sending. What would you like to see? A positive constructive piece or just a bunch of complaining? Which do you think might get serious consideration? And, send the same email, one, to all parties concerned so each will see who has received the email and suggestions. If they feel, like many of us do, that change is needed and that the band could indeed help attendance and donations, I would bet changes would definitely be made because the emphasis for that change would be coming from “above”. Just a suggestion.

  37. I will say it again, but CougarQueen is the type of person that lives paycheck to paycheck, lives in an apartment that costs way more than he can afford, drives a leased BMW, then goes downtown to scoreboard the homeless. Sweet life you got there, CQ. Scoreboarding UNT in athletic prowess is equivalent to someone in our music department scoreboarding you--a colossal waste of time and energy and all ot does it confirm douchiness of the highest order.

  39. Sorry for the late reply but been busy. I said B-. It's real hard to do these since you tend to compare to what we've had as basketball coaches. I won't rehash the points others have made, but we haven't had an A hire that I know of in the last 30+ years. The coaching end is above average. They have a plan and they are trying to execute it. On that alone it's probably a B+. But I agree with @Cooley that the recruiting especially with as many spots as they had was underwhelming, so I went with B-. Interestingly it's similar to Football. Doing more with less, but until someone can coach and recruit we won't be making big waves.

  40. i assume that KB is as good a recruiter as he is (allegedly) an offensive genius. Because what I saw in our conference championship game was an offensive group that was bigger, stronger, and faster than us. That has everything to do with the assessment of raw talent, and the ability to close the deal on getting them into your program.

  41. Large alumni numbers ain't going to hurt. It still will come down to converting those alums into viewers and ticket buyers which is going to become harder as more and more of enrollment starts coming from online students. I don't know that the future bodes well for a Tulsa, Rice, SMU, Tulane private because they not only turn out few alumni they typically aren't well embraced by the t-shirt fans. In LA I ran into numerous people who were USC fans who've never attended a class at USC, that's something Tulane, Rice and SMU once had and don't have today, partly because of the NFL and partly because state colleges started getting serious about intercollegiate athletics. But those schools that aren't creating fans are going to be in a very tough place when your revenue is directly tied to actual viewers and subscribers.

  47. Expecting the same results (no more, no less) as what he did last year is not high expectations. My point is to not judge this coach on what Tony Benford did or not do. Instead, judge him on what he did at Ark. St. Blakeley did not miss on many recruits when he took over. In fact, with the nucleus he inherited he brought in Weasel Johnson to run the point and as we know, Weasel became the best point guard during my time. Blakeley never had 4 guys come into a class and not be productive. Blakeley in subsequent years brought in Charles McMillian, Waymond Lister, Jon Manning and others. The framework was in place and he built on it. Again, I’m not beating up on this coach but we have missed a golden opportunity to really upgrade this roster to compete this year. I never said anything about Johnny Jones and I lead the attack about his recruiting when he first took over. I also didn’t give him credit for improving a bad record from the previous coach.
