  3. Apologies if its been mentioned, but one of the few brights spots in the NO bowl for us was special teams in all areas, but especially kick coverages and returns. Quite an improvement for a group that was getting destroyed earlier in the year.

  4. The next 24 hours. A key recruit will be announcing at 12 today. (Which I have a good feeling about). And a thing to remember this is just the early signing period. We still have another month to recruit. This will be key for us locking down some key recruits. Then we don't have to worry about p5 swooping in last min come Feb. Come Wednesday here is what I am hoping for and predicting sign 2 hs QB (which is needed our QB room is thin. Ended season with 3 QB s) think we add another QB also Juco RB (who will compete for starting time) Hs wr ( with a year in college weight room could be a beast) 2 juco DL (flushe and Johnson replacements) 2 hs safety's ( think both come in and start) 2 athletes And think we could have a surprise signee like we do every year

  5. When I think of the many times we have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, I have to smile about this season. Every dog has his day.....2017 was ours.

  6. The offense turned the ball over 4 times inside their own 30 yard line, twice inside their own 15. Even with Jenkins' struggles, the offense (or lack thereof) was a big reason for the hole we found ourselves in. The defense was not good, but the offense did not do the defense any favors on Saturday.

  7. Over the last two seasons this team is 14-10 in the regular season with 7 of those wins against bowl teams. Your letting the 0-3 post season cloud your judgement.

  8. You call it luck I call it clutch. With Fine at the helm I feel we have a legit shot at winning those close games. It’s the Rodgers factor, the Brady factor - we have a magical quarterback and we lose when the other team is leaps and bounds better than us. I do sense a false sense of security with mason at times, like he can bring us back from anything. That has to be tempered. But our progress as a program will be to put some separation between us and utsa, la tech and uab in 2018. Calling it now uab will be our chief challenger in 2018 in the West. There is so much room for growing with this team. It’s going to be fun to watch. GMG

  11. I think the reality of the season is that, within our conference, having the best QB and RB pairing was enough to win ball games. Not to mention we developed some serious playmakers in the receiving core. I think we sorely missed Jeff Wilson in the last 2 games of the season and it's now left a bad taste after an otherwise great season. He's a home run threat that defenses had to honor, and he's one of the better blocking RBs I can remember here (maybe that's colored by the dramatic blocks he made all year that are memorable). Take him off the field and we were easier to defend. Our defense always made sure we were playing from behind, thus making things even harder on the offense. Next year we need to replace Wilson, a couple of offensive linemen and probably the best kicker any of us have seen at UNT. Replacing Wilson and Moore will not be easy. Assuming that we come close, to take the next step, though, we need more playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. We have to make gameplaning against our defense more difficult than it currently is.

  14. We get pissed when we lose a recruit to a conference foe. Think what the Illinois faithful are feeling after losing two to CUSA's North Texas. Maybe we can replace Illinois in the Big 10.

  15. After seeing Kiffin in action this year, I am less of a hater. Think this is good for the conference. Let's get a few more big names and start making some noise OOC.

  17. The team was 4 - 5 in the 9 games where UNT was the underdog this season. That is a sign of maximizing that talent on the roster. However, if we are going to maintain the win levels, the overall talent level on the team has to be raised at all positions as has been brought up many times. There are many glaring holes that need to be addressed this offseason.

  18. Wins are wins. We can’t know all they are faced with in allocating resources. It was very impressive to get the 9 wins. You can’t take away from that. But against better teams, you see the gaping holes that had to be made up for to get the wins. Those have to be addressed or they will be better exploited even by the lesser teams.

  19. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/468/p3 Like I said in another post, it's a wonder Chief was able to walk away from yesterday's game at all. An amazing testament to just how tough of a player he is. Defensively.....we are the second lowest ranked team with 9 or more wins...(Memphis is ranked lower). Here is where our defense ranks. Pass Defense........#74 Run Defense..........#103 Scoring Defense....#110 Total Defense.........#95 This must change in order to win a championship. Rick

  22. I remember that when SL got hired someone asked him about defense. His response was something like this... I’ll hire someone whose defense scares me to go up against. And then we hired Ek. I miss Ek. Like, a lot. Certainly, our current defense doesn’t even come close to intimidating SL. It doesn’t intimidate anyone in the FBS. Ref needs to go, and soon!

  27. 1- Great for CUSA because of the exposure he brings from his funny tweets, 2- Hopefully this starts a trend of the G5’s coaches staying, 3- could eventually turn FAU into a solid program which will eventually lead to a UNT/UTSA vs FIU/FAU matchups

  29. Wilson likely won’t because of his injury history but if he is able to get healthy and make the postseason talent games like the Senior Bowl it would greatly help. He needs a great pro day in terms of speed, health, and size.. if he does that he could make scouts re-evaluate his film. Moore is the most likely if the group, the kid has been clutch, and consistently good. Hope he can get into the senior bowl and allow scouts to see him kick. A good thing is his touchbacks on kickoffs. Mcclain cost himself money this year and likely needs to rest well, and even then doubtful to me. Wheeler to injured and to light to play the OLB spot.

  30. Luck didn't win or lose any NT games. Winning all the close games is a sure sign that your team doesn't give up easily and is very well led. The talent level differential between FAU, Troy and NT was just too great to overcome and NT frankly collapsed in all three games. FAU and Troy are both at the top of the G5 pyramid and NT is not close to that level yet.

  32. Rick, Surely you saw the aggressiveness in this defense? Just because the blitzes were picked up and/or players took bad angles/missed assignments doesn't mean they weren't being aggressive... It just means they were burned a lot.

  33. I would say 3-5 years just depending on the “quality” of those wins.. Honestly, having the continued 9 wins season would do a lot to boost the losing history of UNT.

  34. I try to be positive/realistic in all things in life. I am especially so on UNT sports. And I don't like calling out players. That being said, I find it more difficult to watch Murray play than any other player I can remember. Just seems to always get whipped. If he starts next year, we didn't make the improvements I was hoping for.

  35. I consider this season a huge success. We got 9 wins for the 7th time in history. Part of that history is D2 and we are in the best conference we've ever been in. That being said, our defense has to get better. And we must fine a way to improve on the O-line and D-line. We didn't get beat by Iowa because while their line was big it wasn't big and fast. We had problems blocking Southern Miss even though we won the game. Their line wasn't big but was extremely athletic. We struggled mightily against FAU an Troy because they big and fast/athletic linemen. Both of those teams had linemen comparable to the low to mid level Big 12/SEC teams. And they throttled us. We need our redshirts to be as good as advertised and recruiting to help if we want to seriously challenge those kind of teams. And our defense has get better all over the field. Hard to point to a defensive strength.

  36. Actually, every program in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana have huge athletic linemen. People talk about DFW being such a recruiting hotbed and I think it is for skill positions but I'll take the hand those schools in the deep south play in terms of recruiting linemen all day every day. If you ever watch the Southland schools from Louisiana, they have linemen bigger and stronger than half of CUSA. Troy beat LSU for a reason this year. They've upset schools like Oklahoma State in the last few years as well. We look at down on schools like Troy but in reality, their tradition is just as good or better. CUSA barely has a better name with recruits than the Sunbelt and Troy has a long winning tradition.

  37. Some won't like this but here's my answer based on realism and facts. First let's start with our history. Here is our history since 1953. Seasons: 53 (1953 to 2017) Record (W-L-T): 249-326-11 Adjusted Record (W-L-T): 252-323-11 Conferences: CUSA, Sun Belt, Big West, MVC, Ind Conf. Championships: 9 Bowl Record: 7 Bowls, 2-5, .286 W-L% (Major Bowls) Ranked in AP Poll: 0 Times (Preseason), 0 Times (Final), 2 Weeks (Total) I do believe for first the time our coaches are being given resources comparable with the competition. But on some level, you are who your history says you are. Our history is six 9 win seasons since 1953 (counting this year). That is a 9 win season every 10.6 years. So to expect 9 win seasons every year isn't realistic IMO. With the schedules being created currently, I'd expect us to be 2-2 in non-conference games most years. Assuming we can go 5-3 in conference games, I expect an average record of 7-5. And before anyone blasts 5-3 in conference, please note there are several conference schools with drastically better history than UNT. And again, I'm of the belief that 50-100 years of data is a pretty damn good data point. So at 7-5, I'm accounting for improved resources as we have averaged less than 5 wins per season over the past 53 seasons. Of course, averages are averages for a reason. So my expectation is for us to be between 5-9 wins. 5 wins in rebuilding years (thinking QB after Mason kinda year). We only have 10 wins twice in 100 years, so expecting that isn't realistic. Well anything is realistic for us fans, but it's doubtful the administration and board 'expect' that and we have no historical data to back up that expectation.

I don't see big numbers, and when i watched our games this year, I didn't see anything that resembled fast either. From just the raw numbers that go along with these freshman and sophomores, the DL's would only be big enough to play LB for the FAU's and the Troy"s of the world, and the LB's are more DB sized by FAU and Troy standards. Character is a very important quality, but BIG AND FAST is what really kicked our asses this year.

  43. At the end of the day, very few predicted a nine-win regular season. Even less predicted a run at the conference championship game. These team exceeded our expectations going into the season and now a lot of us are guilty of forgetting that we were still a bad team last year, and horrific the year before that. I, as well, was not a fan of going back to New Orleans. Probably more selfish reasons (graduated today) than the beliefs held by the alumnus on this board. We got our asses handed to us by Troy. It's ugly because we were supposed to be better than the Sun Belt, but let's not discredit Troy. They are a great team and conference champion of the "lowly" Sun Belt is nothing to scoff at. We have Mason Fine and Jalen Guyton for two more years. Nic Smith is going to be a great replacement for Jeff Wilson. This defense has nowhere to go but up. Yes, today sucked. But there will be even better times ahead for this team. I'm looking forward to taking advantage of my complimentary season tickets that every graduate was offered today in 2018. We have a great chance to start the year 2-0 and 3-1 heading into C-USA play. We will be back again even better next year. From this new North Texas alum, I'm still proud of the effort this team put into the season, and I am excited to continue cheering them on. GMG!
