  2. We have had 4 decommitments this semester. But as I have been saying on other threads don't overreact and that I though none of the 4 were recruiting based or performance based as for as the team goes. 1. Gage = Grades 2 Johnson = I don't think he ever got an official offer. If you watch the film I don't think he is no where near the same level as Nick Smith or Siggers. 3 Kameron King - this situation is very similar to Josh Donavon last year. Would not be surprised to see him go juco route. May be wrong. 4 Vada King - as I said on the podcast UNT is only taking Juco Mid term guys. After getting burnt by Johnson and Hayes I don't hang they are not going to out all eggs in late qualifier basket again. I'm thinking this is grades related due to the timing of the Decommit in terms of semester and us offering other Juco Mid term guy an hour before. I don't believe Vada King makes it to a D1 school until summer at best. #GMG

  5. I'm not concerned. The way recruiting has been going under this staff, their top signees have typically come right before signing day with guys who used to have impressive offers but saw their dry up. We've gotten guys like Rico Bussey, Nick Smith, Jaelon Darden, Ladarius Hamilton, and Eric Jenkins to name a few. This staff's opportunistic strategy in recruiting, plus their evaluating ability and their developing ability has been able to overcome the lack of head-to-head recruiting wins. I expect more of the same this year, even after a more successful season.

  8. Funny. I have made many jumps...started with five static line jumps and then went freefall. Let me tell you, there are definitely better jumpers than others. It took me several jumps before I got my body position anywhere near correct for decent free falls and it took even longer for me to feel comfortable doing stars and other formations. I was definitely NOT one of the better formation jumpers within our group. In fact, I pretty much just stayed out of the way! Ha! I enjoyed jumping to a spot better as it was just me trying it hit a spot on the ground as close as I could. It is definitely not just jump out and then fall. Ha! Well, in my case for several jumps it was pretty much jump out roll over a few times and then straighten out and "fly right". Took a bit, but once you get it...you get it! Lots of fun and much safer than many think. Just don't forget to pull that rip cord. I still have the rip cord from my first free fall jump! These Army Black Knights are fantastic at what they do. They are definitely the experts.

  11. I love and respect our service academies, and I respect and appreciate this guys choice to defend our country, but last season his style of play really rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't care much for the way he played when we beat them at West Point, and I didn't like his style of play in the HOD either. I hope our receivers catch 7 touchdowns on this guy today.

  15. Finally the city of Denton is getting behind UNT. I grew up in Denton and I think that has been a large part of the problem with recruiting. Denton just did not have a good college atmosphere. I mean what was there to do for college aged kids here outside of Fry St.? Now the square and that entire area has been redone to make the city more fun for kids that age. Putting that Medallion on the square and on I-35 helps brand this university. The city improvements let's a kid who visits know that there are things outside of class and football to do in Denton. Still may not be the best, but it has improved significantly.

  16. Heard a great speaker last night talking about a number of topics, but what stood out to me is when he mentioned the lost art of civility. Being in disagreement with someone is alright, but we have lost the art of having civil discussions over these differing opinions. People are too quick to label, name call or put down their "opponent" and their message is lost on each other. First, I took this as a gut punch because I can be guilty of this, but then as I listened, I found it sad that this is what we have become.

  17. The flag looks awesome with the wind today. However the wind doesn’t feel good on the Alumni Pavilion patio. That reminds me that Pavilion is need of expansion. I would love to make a donation dedicated to expand it. Has anyone heard of something like that getting going?

  19. I think any offense -- including the option ones -- can have off days. For all the physicality and "simplicity" it relies on timing, execution, and rhythm. If any of those are off it can backfire. I think Monken and company have done a good job this season with them. I still think this NT team is the best Army has faced outside of Ohio State. They won't beat themselves, but I don't know that they have the athletes to stay with us on defense. I think NT has enough defensively to get enough stops.

  20. Not that it really matters, but I think the perception that the average NT student leans far left is not reality.

  21. People were talking about Guyton getting drafted a few weeks ago and now he has all but disappeared. Hopefully he gets back on track and we find a way to get him the football today against Army.

  22. And yet many (most?) of the folks on GMG weren't happy about these recruiting classes. They may have helped us reach two bowls but some fat guy in Minneapolis had them ranked below UTSA & LaTech. Oh, well. Maybe we'll be able to recruit some real football players in the future.

  23. Well, scheduling Liberty was certainly a step in the right direction. [written sarcastically for the more literal among you]

  24. The "UNT, established 1890" is one of the better branding efforts, IMO. It speaks to tradition and legitimacy. Public perception. It says: "We've always been here. Where have you been?"

  25. Bowl payouts are net of ticket sales requirements. If the payout is $10 and the team sells only $1 of its $2 allotment, then the payout to the team is $9. And if it's going to cost the school $10 to get the team, including support staff, cheerleaders, etc to & from the bowl and put them up in a hotel and feed them, then the school is losing $1. Schools often (perhaps usually) lose money on bowl games. It's not about how many FCS teams you play, it's about how many wins over FCS can count towards bowl eligibility. That number is 1. You can play more than one FCS school, but you're essentially making it more difficult for your team to be bowl-eligible because only one of the (expected) two wins matter in the quest for a bowl. I think the "pass" (waiver) you're thinking about for Army was for the 2015 game against Yale to count towards bowl eligibility. The game against Yale - a non-scholarship FCS school - was played at the Yale Bowl as part of the 100th anniversary of the stadium, so the waiver request was grounded in the historical nature of the game. Note that the waiver wasn't even used because we lost to Yale (and didn't come close to bowl eligibility).

  26. I would like to see the AD set up a table in one (or both) of the north corners letting folks know how to get tickets to the Rice game, providing info on where to stay, advertising the tailgate activities, etc. Even if few take them up on it, it puts the idea in people's heads that travel to road games is actually a thing.

  31. I thought BC took some cheap shots at our players. Two come to mind. Maybe someone can explain the one call towards the end when the BC thug foul out. I thought a tech foul was called. The UNT player got two shots and then two shots for the one and one but the ball was given to BC after the four foul shots. I guess it was not a tech but i am not sure what was called. My first game this year. I think we have a coach, he is on his player and talks to the ref on questionable calls. All the players are moving when on the court, last year we had a lot of standing around. The crowd was not large but it was involved in the game. I am sitting in row A this year and I could barely hear the ball being dribbled. Last year I sat on last row on the lower section (top of the stairs) and I could hear the ball being dribbled. We just need to get our fans to show up. I think we have taken the first step toward being respectable in basketball.. Might take two more years but I know we will get there.

  33. In this day and age it’s more about protecting your investment. Remember market value is what you can make on the open market not necessarily what your job should be paid. We need to make sure Wren and Seth at a minimum are at or next to the top in CUSA. In more and more cases you have to overpay to keep the wolves away from the door

  34. Under Smatresk our administration seems to finally be serious about athletics. I don't think Wren would have come here otherwise. The issue with UTSA is they don't seem to be at that point.

  35. I don't think you want to take on the responsibility of policing other boards. I don't get the hate for the hire. I just skimmed her bio, but if I understand correctly, she has been at the top of the totem pole at NAU and achieved across-the-board success. Am I missing something?

  36. quick thoughts 1. Lots of fun sexism and racism over there. 2. NAU does have a very nice swimming/diving facility...had the chance to bang out a few miles there while we were in Flagstaff...swimming at 7000' is a challenge. 3. someone needs to rein in Munthe. he's embarrassing.

  37. I believe that a college student that doesn't know when the game is or who the opponent is will never respond to advertising. I was asked this week what division does North Texas play in. "The top division," I answered. Well then what division does someone like Texas or A&M play in, he asked. "The top division," I answered. Win. GO MEAN GREEN

  38. After reading through some of their posts it made me realize that I don't thank the mods here enough. Thank you to the folks who keep this board relatively kid friendly. I don't know what to make of their hire. On the one hand, she's definitely considered an up and comer by several sources. On the other, they haven't really won anywhere she's been.

  42. Not to beat a dead horse, but what makes the casual fans want to be in the stadium early? There is no pregame atmosphere whatsoever from the band to the team entrance. Its just the band running onto the field, playing a song or two, haphazardly lining up, team coming out to nothing in-particular, then the band just wondering back off the field to get into the stands. Give em something like Va Tech, dotting the I at Ohio State, The smoke in Miami, TD Jesus at ND, Bevo or Ralphie at Texas and Colorado, the Eagle at Auburn, etc.............

  45. Maybe Guyton wants to play close to home and has great chemistry with Fine. He can put up big numbers here. We don't understand winning here, we have success and now we are worried the coaches and players are leaving. Never had that problem with Mac. So which situation do you prefer?
