  1. Not if they're smart. Gets them into metroplex and TX which has plenty of bball talent. Plus just the venue alone will put butts in seats, more revenue for conference USA more revenue for schools.

  6. It's a football game, people. Against a full FBS member school that is a "winnable" game for UNT. We are not nominating Falwell for Chancellor nor are we anointing him the "second coming". It is a football game. Plain and simple it is.

  7. Matt Brune | Staff Writer I’m from San Antonio and an avid sports fanatic. I watch more than my fair share of college football, basketball and baseball, and am familiar with most Texas universities. Two years ago, when it was time to choose a school, I chose North Texas — a school almost no one, including myself, knew anything about. Most people associate large, powerful schools with having grandiose sports teams. With that in mind, it’s painfully obvious why a majority of people, like my 16-year-old self, had not heard of UNT. In general, athletics at North Texas has historically sucked, especially the revenue generating powerhouses of football and men’s basketball. But that’s all changing. The Mean Green are a few years from no longer being cellar dwellers and a few years from being a top-four program in Conference USA. I say this with confidence, because first-year Athletic Director Wren Baker has shown a vision, a plan and a concise approach for making North Texas better now. Not later. While he did not make the decisions to hire women’s basketball head coach Jalie Mitchell or football head coach Seth Littrell, Baker has given them the resources to succeed and had their backs throughout these growing times. North Texas has six core sports in football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s soccer and softball. The 2016-17 average winning percentage in Conference USA play across those six sports is 46.5, up exactly five percent from the 41.5 percent average in 2015-16. That’s including the dumpster fire that was men’s basketball. View Full Article

  8. I'm also for limits of federal judges. The branches, in my view, are not co-equal if the executive branch is the only one term limited. I'm certain that conservatives and liberals alike can think of judges and justices they wish were term limited. I believe all branches or none should be term limited. As far as Liberty and bigotry, it's just one of those arguments people make regarding private institutions for having their own rules, regulations, and beliefs. I could say the Knights of Columbus are bigoted for being a Catholic organization, catering to Catholic principals. But, why waste time doing so? in my view, let birds of a feather flock together, unless they are violent/anarchist. Liberty is not a place I'd send my kids, but others would. I feel the same about Baylor and BYU. To me, you are probably limiting yourself professionally with a degree with those names on it, to a certain extent; but, that is also another discussion. In reality, those who get degrees from those type of schools are usually connected enough to have jobs lined up after school anyway. They have a mindset and will likely stick close to people with the same mindset. The alumni of those schools are very loyal to its grads. And, in truth, graduates of liberal schools are the same. Not everyone is for a school as liberal as, say, the University of Texas. Not everyone would be down for going to a private, "Church-based" school. I think UNT is pretty much in the middle. I don't know how it is today, but from 1990-95, I had a fair shake with all my professors at UNT. Outside of my political science classes, I can only think of two professors who were open about their politics - an old, cranky English professor, who was likely a lesbian; and a Logic professor who droned on and on about the rain forests instead of Logic. After a couple of weeks of class, it was like, "Okay, dude, we get it - you think the rain forests need to be more protected. Move on, please, we've paid the tuition to study Logic, not listen to extended diatribes about the rain forest situation...as you see it in your head." The thread discussion, though, is football and whether Liberty's program is worthy of a home and home. I think they are not. I much prefer Wren's Tech series and RV's final effort, the Memphis home and home.

  9. Well said. Thank you. Very similar to why we need term limits for those in Congress. Interesting statement. I'll be happy to listen if you want to share some of the ways Liberty hides bigotry behind religion.

  11. The problem is announcing the first of what might be multiple scheduling moves before all the other moves happen. WB wrote in his tweet changing a FBS schedule is like moving across four lanes on 635 during rush hour. I remember reading about a single canceled game about a decade ago that forced over a dozen schedule changes to something like six or eight different schools. It is no where nearly as simple as school X has an opening in year Y. The problem is, we the fans don't know either what the actual challenges are nor what the actual options or schools involved are either. Was Army canceled or delayed to an as yet undetermined date. Did Army or NT as for the move? This uncertainly is compounded by a distrust by the NT fans of the athletic department. Most fans don't have the delusional "a will not believe ANYTHING the school writes, says or does," but most of us are predisposed toward a "trust but verify" attitude. When you're negotiating contacts, you simply can't talk about how the negotiations are going without causing problems. There is a reason the leaks from when unions are negotiating with management always are done by the side wanting to slow or change the direction the negations are taking. WB is in a damned if you do or damned if you don't situation. I wouldn't have let the Liberty scheduling get out until more pieces were in place but I don't know if it got out intentionally. On a side note, I'm curious how the Liberty fans got an FOI request forced on a private institution.

  13. After giving myself a few days to think about this announcement,.... I still believe this is a bad series for North Texas. We don't need "home and home" series with an FBS newbie. This series does nothing to improve our brand or reputation within the college football world. Yes, I know the administration has said it is part of a larger scheduling plan that will make fans happy, but I don't see the logic in revealing this series without any positive news to go with it. Especially in the same week we learned the terrible news surrounding players and a coach from Benford's final season. Surely the powers that be can understand why some fans are shaking the heads. We need to hear a good announcement. (Ex: Home and Home with Oklahoma State)

  15. I just check our 247 offer page every couple of days. I enjoy keeping up with our recruiting activity, and believe SL' s staffs have been the most aggressive. Honestly, this time of year I hope for a new recruit a day since there isn't much else to discuss. Sure wish our softball team was competitive and we had baseball, as it would make the spring/early summer much less boring.

  18. Texas has been number 1 for twenty years (I remember this very same topic on the cover of SI in the nineties), and they still can't pull out of the post Mack Brown spiral. They really should be winning national championships at everything, but they don't anymore, and I've not figured out why. (Not that I'd ever root for them..like at all)

  19. I just appreciate that they have gotten out in front of this, been transparent in their communication of the situation and have handled this, so far, in the correct manner. It is never easy when face with difficult situations, but the response speaks volumes of the character of the administration from Smatresk on down. Nice article Beauregard

  20. I wouldn't mind him here even if he contributes in the same way Wallace did. Sure he didn't live up to the hype he had out of high school, but he offered something while he was here. Certainly not a wasted scholly.

  21. I wouldn't mind it in that case. But it appears the Arkansas game is still on the schedule, while the army game got ditched (and no communication about that happening either). I really hope that is not true. If it were true, I would not see why we are doing this at all. How does it improve anything if we don't at least get money out of it? We already had that on thee schedule. The aarmy game ticked all those boxes, and was versus an opponent that people like.

  22. Until we are enlightened with additional details, the most likely answer seems to be that we are trying to help out Liberty by giving them a home game in 2018. Not sure why that would be at the top of our priority list. We need more details from WB pretty soon.

  23. If you read the twitter thread I started with Wren, he indicates that this move is a pivot point by which we could open up a host of options and contracts that are nearly complete and will be much more pleasing to both the team and fan base. I just hope he can live up to such because this particular school is a gut-punch to see on our schedule.

  24. It is going to be interesting to see if the AD provides any answers to the reason for this series. We had a perfectly good H/H in 2018 and 2021 with Army. Unless Army asked to move those games, it seems like the AD needs to explain this move instead of patting the fans on the head and saying that it's complicated. I get it that Liberty is under the gun to get some home games scheduled in 2018 in order to meet NCAA regulations. Maybe we were trying to do them a solid by getting the ball rolling with the first home game for them. Unfortunately, we are not getting any useful info from the AD. Unless we get some new insight as to why we couldn't play Army as scheduled, I don't see why we would help out an organization like Liberty, with the ex-Baylor AD at the helm. WB, please enlighten us.

  25. Be on the lookout for Liberty. They have big money, and are spending it to build a sports program. That may be a sleeper gem in scheduling.
    1 point
  26. Correct, they are transitional and not bowl eligible until 2019. However every team that plays them in 2018 gets to count it as playing an FBS team, not a FCS team. CBS suggests they are a good fit for the Sun Belt that will be losing Idaho.

  27. That is not my only concern, however it seems a couple posters on here want UNT to be more involved and want the athletic department to implode.

  30. A trio of North Texas golfers - will travel to University of Texas Golf Club for the Austin, Texas Regional including senior Cory Churchman and sophomores Ian Snyman and Thomas Rosenmueller. Snyman, a first-team selectee. had the squad's best round (67) and an impressive fourth place finish at the Wolf Run Intercolliegate. Churchman earned his second consecutive place on the conference's second team, and averaged a single round score of 73.65 on the season, and was the team's highest finisher at the C-USA Championship, tying for second at even par. Rosenmueller was also named to the second team and averaged a single round score of 73.45, and finished in a tie for seventh at the C-USA Championship http://www.conferenceusa.com/news/2017/5/4/golf_0504175519.aspx

  31. Am I the only one that finds it strange that many on here cannot understand why P5 schools will not give us a home and home but then we say were too good for a home and home with liberty ?

  34. It's a winnable home and home with a FBS team, something that's far better than a game against any FCS team. Checking FBSSchedules.com, I see Liberty also has a home and home series scheduled with New Mexico from the Mountain West Conference. And games scheduled against P5s Baylor, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. I don't understand the convoluted thought process that some how it's fine for P5s to play Liberty but it's some how "beneath" NT. We need six wins and the more of those against FBS teams the better.

  35. I don't know how many of these "positive athletics" articles I can take from the NT Daily. I'm used to seeing nothing but "athletics hatred" from them.

  36. So far, there are two people implicated in this mess, an one year ball player and a student manager. People on here with wild speculation and assuming the absolute worse are not helping anything, and I am not just referring to "Mr. Post anything to get attention". This does not point to systemic failure in NT athletics or thus far involvement from anyone else but a couple of very small time inept knuckleheads. That may change, but until it does I don't understand the impulse to make this story much bigger than it now seems to be.

  37. So based on your logic, if a win over Incarnate Word puts us in a Bowl game the fans would be disappointed to go to a bowl?
    1 point
  38. So let's see ... After leading us to a much better season than most would have thought possible - Seth doesn't know what he's doing After coming into an AD that was dysfunctional at best and trying to make changes - Wren doesn't know what he's doing Should we start a pot to see how soon Grant proves he doesn't know what he's doing? Same for Kansas State

  39. I love it. Winable FBS game. At the end of the season no ones going to look back at 8 wins and be upset about that W. look at how Boise got to where they were. WINNABLE GAMES! With winning comes more fans and better recruits

  40. So Wren has arranged two home and homes, one with Texas Tech and one with Liberty. Both series have the first game at their place. I hope that Wren knows what RV learned after a few of these "deals" - that the return game is not reciprocated unless it is very expensive to do so.

  42. Meh. I don't really care what declaration that conference makes. We just need to beat smug in football. That is as far as I care about the AAC.

  43. I highly doubt the coaches won't do a speech of some type. That is what this is for, to stir up interest in the program. I hope it is not the self-serving love fest that RV had, but talking to every coach individually to obtain the usual boilerplate news would be ineffective and disappointing. There was plenty of time to talk to coaches if you chose under the old format. As noted above, doing both should not be an issue.
