  1. Holy crap! It's February 8, and I just renewed my 2017 MGC membership AND my 2017 football tickets. It took maybe three minutes! Now THAT'S that improvement I've been looking for! Also, maybe a new feature or something I didn't notice before, but they have monthly payment plans now that wrap your MGC membership and tickets into one price, and let you pay out over 3, 4, 5, or 6 months (I think that's what it was). I didn't do that because I just paid with my tax refund, so I don't know if there's extra cost embedded in that, but it's a nice option nonetheless. Good job, ticket office! Keep up the operational improvements @TheWren™!

  4. In alphabetical order: 1. WR Jaeion Darden; "Darden might have had more attention had he played wide receiver at the high school level. Darden starts at QB for Houston Heights, so it will be interesting to see how he transitions to WR in college. He's a great athlete with a high football IQ."; 2 Tyreke Davis (S/LB) "The heartbeat of one of 5A's best teams, Davis burst into the scene with a breakout junior season that saw him average 6.7 yards a carry as a running back and lead the team with 117 tackles at linebacker. He's likely to bulk up and stick at North Texas, where he is committed."; 3.Cameron Johnson DB-A North Texas commit, Johnson has to work on his technique and footwork in order to make an early impact for the Mean Green. He does a good job of pressing wide outs at the line of scrimmage and often wins when he gambles by jumping routes early."4. Brian Parish (OL) "Parish looks taller than his listed size and possesses obvious length, giving him good frame potential as he continues to physically develop. He's an impressive downfield blocker because of his ability to get off the line of scrimmage and use his athleticism. Parish is great as a blocker in the screen game". 5. Cade Pearson (QB), Pearson gives his receivers a chance with accuracy. He doesn't possess the elite arm strength of P5 recruits, but he is accurate and deliberate. He excels in the quick passing game and has enough arm to stretch a defense when necessary. He's mobile inside the pocket".

  5. The first roster update for the 2017 season came out recently (not sure exactly when). Here are some items of note. Garrett Gunter is back as a Redshirt Senior. He was a Senior last year but suffered a season-ending injury in the 4th game against Rice. 4 games is the max in football for a medical redshirt (hardship waiver if 93-98 is reading), so it looks like he got it. Devlin Isadore is listed as a Redshirt Junior. Per an interview, it seems he thought he would have 3 years of eligibility left. It turns out his eligibility clock did start back in fall of 2014 while at Angelo State, so he has two years left here. Looks like Devin O'Hara wasn't eligible for a Redshirt last year, as he is listed as a Redshirt Senior. His former JUCO teammate WR Quinetin Jackson did receive a Redshirt as he is now a Redshirt Junior. 2016 signee Darius Turner is no longer on the roster. I could be wrong, but I think that's the first Littrell signee to leave after actually making it here and being eligible. Here is the breakdown of scholarship players by grade: Seniors: 19 Juniors: 16 Sophomores: 15 Freshmen: 5 This totals 55 scholarship players. This includes just 3 of our signees, so the other 16 will bring the total up to 71, if everyone stays. We also have 5 other commits who weren't announced and it appears are being blueshirted. This would bring our scholarship total up to 76 for next year, if nobody left between now and then and we didn't add anyone else.

  6. The Baltimore Ravens hired Mike Singletary as their LBs coach with no prior coaching experience. Gotta start somewhere. Again, if Zach has a passion to coach, that scenario (Ek leaving, freeing up a LB coach spot) would be extremely ideal for all involved.

  9. Was he standing to close to Jeff? I know Alec said he almost chucked at the HOD bowl. But seriously, Pirtle has a youtube channel and he puts vids up of him doing stuff and in one he and Mason are working out real hard, running hills and stuff. They did every step in the stadium one night just because. I guarantee you if Mason gets beat out for the qb job it won't be for lack of effort. That kid is out there grinding every day even when the coaches aren't watching.

  10. We have our first sponsor! Kevin Kokjohn who leads Addison Transportation has contacted me to say that Addison Transportation will sponsor the game once again. This is our SEVENTH year to hold this event, and the SEVENTH year that Addison Transportation and Kevin Kokjohn has stepped up to be one of our sponsors! Kevin has been very supportive of this event through the years as sponsor, former player, silent auction donor and silent auction buyer. So, it is hard for me to come up with the proper thank you, but, folks, know that Kevin and Addison Transportation continue to play a large role in our success with this scholarship event. So....thank you, Sir, thank you very much.

  11. Everybody is all upset about our low # of scholarship players, but doesn't every other program have the same issues (guys sign and can't make grades, kids quit, players transfer, etc). Has anyone ever done an investigation into the scholarship numbers of the other CUSA teams? Surely our scholarship numbers can't be THAT different from everyone else. And isn't keeping kids in school and graduating them part of the APR formula, that we score so high in?

  15. Unfortunately, most NT fans are not old enough to have witnessed the best area of NT basketball. Spika and Blakeley were much better coaches than Jones. Gales had some good teams but was not consistent. Since Gales, and what most fans are familiar with; the NT coaches were Jankovich, Trilli, Jones and Benford. Jones looks mighty good in comparison. Jankovich was too green to coach the Mean Green when he was here, but now is a very successful coach. Trilli and Benford are two of the worst coaches to ever coach a division 1 ball club. I doubt Jones will even be considered. However, Cross should be a candidate. I doubt he would be interested, but definitely worth a look. Those concerned about his overall record maybe overlooking UTA 24-11 record last year. UTA may be fourth currently in the Belt, but they are also number 57 in rpi rankings.

  19. First, with an attendance of 39,117, the HOD bowl had the 2nd largest crowd of all 19 early bowls from 12/17 through 4 pm, 12/28 (eclipsed only by a slightly larger turn-out for the Military Bowl in Fort Worth. This again, proved that North Texas can be an attractive and profitable pick for a bowl. Second, the game was a broadcasters dream, with ups and downs and a down to the wire finish. Certainly, it left a better impression than a blow out would have...and third, the desire of the team and the enthusiasm of the North Texas crowd, made a very favorable impression of the program overall. I say "good job"!

  21. Orrrr, given the ordeal that rape victims have to go through, these women may want to hit Baylor the only place it hurts while also avoiding having their names be part of this circus. A criminal trial means their names become public...and every defender of rape culture with their "what was she wearing", "was she drinking" or "was she being flirtatious" garbage will crawl out of their holes. Then, after the public scrutiny phase, the girl gets to relive the event while a defense attorney questions her level Of promiscuity and paints her as a liar (and you are a FOOL if you don't think Baylor would throw a crap ton of money towards the criminal defense of these young men to avoid the PR hit of multiple convictions). So, no, I don't just readily assume that this is a group of gold diggers out to sully Baylor's good name. I have two daughters and I would wholeheartedly support their attempts to seek justice, regardless of the avenue they chose to seek it.

  22. Yep, it is that time of year again...time to start thinking about and planning for our annual UNT Cheer Team Scholarship Basketball Game. We are looking at April 1st this year with an afternoon tip-off around 3pm. But, that date/time is not official as yet. Much yet to formalize and coordinate before I can make it permanent. A little background for this year's game...you may or may not know, but UNT's Cheer and Dance Teams have been moved from Athletics to Student Affairs. While new for UNT, it is not unique within the University World as I have come to find out. But, this provides me with a new team to work with in coordinating this event. So, I need to do some coordinating with some new folks this year. First meeting has been held, and I must say, I am very encouraged by the potential support we may have for our game going forward. I am working on the possibility of moving the game to a new venue on campus that is better suited to basketball than the volleyball gym, but the volleyball gym remains a potential site...more on this later. In addition, I am working on a sign-up and donations link that will provide for our funds to go directly to UNT for the s holarship which will not have any fees taken from our registration fees and/or donations....result: more scholarship funds and an official receipt to donors and players fees that can be used for IRS purposes and that will give you credit for a specific donation amount. Again...working on it, but the possibility seems doable at this point...more later. So, what can you do at this time? Well, 1. Consider playing in the game, 2. Consider making a donation to the event and the Cheer Scholarship, 3. Consider being a sponsor for the event...individually or through your business, 4. Consider donating something for the silent auction...UNT related or otherwise like gift cards, game tickets, you name it...it could help, 5. Consider volunteering to help with the silent auction, the concessions, etc., 6. Can't play? Consider volunteering to referee...we need 2 minimum and four would be nice, 7. Consider attending the event...we need support and silent auction bidders. You can post questions here, post that you will play, will sponsor, have a silent auction item, want to volunteer, etc.. Or, you can PM me through GoMeanGreen.Com. Yes, this is pretty preliminary, but it is what I have at this point. I get the feeling that Student Affairs is going to be a great new partner for us. So...we raised a tad over $6,000.00 when all was said and done through last year's game...how much can we raise this year? Got to break our $6,000.00 record, of course, but by how much?

  31. You're free to have that debate with me, but for the amount of money I got back, I could've earned about $1.53 in a 12-month CD. The "loan" I gave the government was in the form of tax credits for raising a kid and paying student loan interest, and is juuust about the right amount of cushion to avoid having to write an unpleasant check should something get screwed up in estimated payments or withholding. Then again, what the hell do I know about this topic? I'm just happy I got tickets. I like where you're going with this.

  33. McNeil's has been there over 75 years. They celebrated their 50th when I was there in about 82. Charlie and Virginia McNeil owned it then and their daughter and son-in-law, Steve and Pam Grimes, both worked their along with Charlie's stepmom Gladys. Their son Steve was not actively involved with the store. Charlies's father started the business by selling/trading Maytag wringer washers out of his old Model A truck. Charlie married Virginia, who's family owned Ball Furniture and they combined the businesses and the rest is history. I think Ned was Charlie's brother but he was not involved, at least when I worked there in the 80's. Great family and you will never get better service. I have a million stories from working there. Love that family and the employees that are like family.

  37. Ryan Stanchek Ryan Stanchek enters his third season as the Braves offensive line coach after helping set the Southwestern Athletic Conference rushing record in each of his first two seasons (3,812 in 2015). Alcorn led the nation in yards per carry (6.66 in 2015; 6.42 in 2014) and rushing touchdowns (44 in 2015; 50 in 2014). Alcorn averaged 324.2 yards rushing per SWAC contest. In 2015, Stanchek mentored Isekelli Ongosia and Detonio Dade to First-Team All-SWAC selections. Dade was also named First-Team SBN All-American Team and Ongosia was SBN All-American Honorable Mention Selection. Isaac Sampson was a First-Team All-SWAC and SBN All-American in 2014. Detonio Dade was a Second-Team All-SWAC performer in 2014. Stanchek previously served as an offensive graduate assistant at Indiana University from 2011 to 2013. He worked with the offensive line core at Florida State in 2011 as an offensive quality control. Over the last five years, Stanchek has worked with five offensive linemen who have been selected in the NFL Draft. http://www.alcornsports.com/staff.aspx?staff=97

  38. I think the defense should be a lot better. I don't think any of the losses on the defense are key and you add English. Yes I was the one pumping up Chad Davis before the season, but he wasn't even used right by these coaches and he was very average. There should be no drop off with Jenkins as the full time starter. Jenkins should upgrade the spot this year if he improves. Anyone who paid attention to the secondary would have also seen the big drop off in Grays performance. He was playing hurt, but it also looked like he struggled with some reads. Fred Scott also played hurt. He is decent when healthy. Should not touch the field if he is hurt. Yes he is smart, but whoever fills that spot will have had a second year to learn the defense and should be a better athlete. At minimum, the defense should perform the same as last year. Jenkins and Brooks are going to give up big plays vs good offenses, but hopefully Brooks can get his head around and get a few more picks. If English and others can make a big impact in stopping the run and providing a pass rush, the safeties can focus more on stopping the pass, and the defense can improve.

  40. And, there are probably underlying factors to why he has waited. My guess would be #1 of those factors would be, based on the AD report, that he needed to be financially prudent and wait until he was able to hire a permanent replacement instead of an interim that would win maybe a few more games than Benford.

  42. How'd that work out? RV loved him some RV. I want Wren busy fixing the flaming garbage dump(quite literally according to Trip's report) that RV left this place in. Wren has so far addressed: 1. Re-built Football locker rooms 2. Rebuilt women's BBall locker room 3. Re-built Football meeting rooms. 4. Re-surfaced Warranch Tennis Center 5. Expanded Apogee concessions and beer options Wren is taking care of the low hanging fruit that can be fixed quickly. He will stick to his word and evaluate(see fire) Benford on or around March 4th.
